ArnoldP··on The Canadian Housing Boom Fueled by China’s Billionaires
My understanding is that you do have the right to know who complained about your compliance under Bill 101.

Anyways, I don't think it's asking much to have your website/blog/frontend in the language of the province where you operate, but the photocopier business, keyboards in french etc is ridiculous. Also it seems the language police always get more confident whenever a PQ government gets power.

ArnoldP··on This Time, Miller and Valasek Hack the Jeep at Speed
I wonder if he had held on to the wheel would he have been able to counteract the turning?
ArnoldP··on Apple Pay Now Accounts for Three-Fourths of U.S. Contactless Payments
Yeah, but I see people using cards contactlessly (oof..) but rarely using their phone, and when I do it seems clunky and awkward...
ArnoldP··on T-Mobile Grants Users Free PokemonGo Data for a Year
I haven't used it -- Is Pokemon Go a big data hog? from screens it looks like simple maps - no bitmaps and images from the camera, so no data there...
ArnoldP··on Facebook Messenger begins testing end-to-end encryption using Signal Protocol
If barely anyone uses it then how is it a game changer? Please update us in a few months with usage statistics.
ArnoldP··on Facebook Messenger begins testing end-to-end encryption using Signal Protocol
I think the more likely scenario is they know the value of the conversations they datamine, but don't want to lose customers to these other message apps that tout their encryption. So they do the bare minimum to support encryption while still having access to most data.
ArnoldP··on Running I3 Window Manager on Ubuntu for Windows
Do you still need to be in the windows fast lane preview for access to bash on windows? I want to try this but im a bit hesitant to run the earliest of beta software on my only productivity machine...
ArnoldP··on Arcade City's Founder Wants to Use Ethereum to Disrupt Uber
I see this as the end game to pretty much all these companies that claim to enable the 'sharing economy'. Why share 20% of your profits with Uber when you can share them with yourself?
ArnoldP··on AirBnBWhileBlack hashtag highlights potential racial bias on rental app
Are they grouping those people by race? That's racism.
ArnoldP··on 10 gigabit Ethernet 80 GHz point-to-point bridges
I have line of sight to the building where I work, I would love something like this so I could get gigabit internet at home w/o paying through the nose :)
ArnoldP··on Checklistomania makes it easy to keep track of relative tasks
I was on board w/ 29.95$ for an android app, I balked at $60 for the windows version.
ArnoldP··on Checklistomania makes it easy to keep track of relative tasks
Cool, I'm going to check it out later today.
ArnoldP··on Checklistomania makes it easy to keep track of relative tasks
It isn't clear from the description, but does this allow you to have tasks become 'triggered' for lack of a better term once a task has been completed? eg I want my task list in the morning to say make eggs and bacon, then once I've done that a new task pops up for me to do the dishes.
ArnoldP··on Kindle Unlimited scammers on Amazon
And now watch for a glut of 'Choose your Own Adventure'-style books on KU.
ArnoldP··on Juno to soft-launch this month as the anti-Uber service
There's atleast 15% wiggle room on each journey, seeing as Uber takes 20% off the top. Aside from their expenses promoting and competing with other 'ride sharing' services I don't see where that cash is going.
ArnoldP··on Juno to soft-launch this month as the anti-Uber service
No, I don't. But I'm not in the US and Amazon doesn't really present that great a deal once you factor in shipping, taxes, duty etc.

I don't shop at Walmart though, because of their poor track record treating their employees well.

ArnoldP··on Juno to soft-launch this month as the anti-Uber service
All other things being equal I'll go with the service that gives more to the person doing the actual labour.
ArnoldP··on Maps Showing Where FBI Planes Are Watching from Above
I really think Buzzfeed is on to something. It's far more palatable to see an entertainment site foray in to legitimate journalism than to see a respectable news outlet stoop to clickbait headlines.
ArnoldP··on Reverse engineering a router part 1 – Hunting for hardware debug ports
Cool, looking forward to the next post.
ArnoldP··on WordPress Plugin Possible Cause in Mossack Fonseca Breach
It's ridiculous that they had so much information online at all.
ArnoldP··on Corporate Media Gatekeepers Protect Western 1% from Panama Leak
Yeah that was some information that was missing earlier.
ArnoldP··on Linting Prose in Emacs with ProseLinter
This is really cool, It would be nice for adhering to style guides such as http://www.economist.com/styleguide/introduction/
ArnoldP··on More Chinese Mobile UI Trends
I think badges only work if there is actual wealth/value behind them. No one will use them as true status symbols, rather just fun things, and they should be priced as such.

What I think twitter should do is act as a notary of sorts, and the badges would reflect real world accomplishments, like being graduated from a certain institution, membership in a professional group, etc. Something that gives your comments more weight. People/institutions would pay for this.

ArnoldP··on ABOT – Automate critical tasks
So, is this 100% going to keep my information private?
ArnoldP··on Lwan, a high-performance web server with Lua support
I'm certainly not in the market for a webserver with lua support, but if I were I would definitely be looking at nginx first. May I suggest that you make a subsection/table that delineates why someone would go for this rather than nginx? There is a section that says that if you think of apache/nginx first then that {nginx/apache} is probably best for you, but I think lumping in apache and nginx together may be a mistake, and even if I'm giving preferential treatment to nginx I may be swayed nonetheless.
ArnoldP··on Android N’s freeform window mode
The bezels for each window are crazy. If tablets and phones can detect when my ear is near to the screen they should be able to know when my finger is nearing the screen then overlay some buttons, but otherwise dedicate that screen space to whatever content is in the app.
ArnoldP··on Napster Founder's Movie Plan Will Fuel Torrent Sites, Theaters Say
And they are completely correct. Even if people aren't able to bypass the HDMI encryption (which they will), a camera recording at 60fps at the screen will produce a near perfect copy, certainly 'good enough' for most people.

I do still see movies in theatre on occasion if the movie is better experienced in a group. Movie theatres need to start showing live events and offering better concessions, and alcohol. essentially become sports bars but with exceptional viewing quality.

And bars are currently eating their lunch, expanding in to other markets than sport that would be well suited to cinema venues. A number of bars in my area offer nights where they stream pro video games and they are regularly filled completely. Same thing with live streams of plays/operas which repertory theatres in my area have started to do, albeit with projectors that aren't nearly as good as your local cineplex.

ArnoldP··on Western Digital makes a $46, 314GB hard drive just for the Raspberry Pi
I wonder if they limited the drive in software to 314gb and it's just a 500gb drive in reality. I have no idea how actual disks are produced and whether or not it's feasible to make specific platters for each product.

In any case very interesting, I wish there was a decent system w/ SATA for making DIY NAS devices, it seems though each raspi-ish with sata lacks gigabit ethernet, or they are limited to USB speeds.

ArnoldP··on 7 things we’ve learned about Project Fi
This is ridiculous, like a slice of life from some high fliers
ArnoldP··on Show HN: Trigger Happy, a selfhosted clone of IFTTT
I'm not suggesting you were, but these 'apps' work well at consuming the services of walled gardens without having to be within the walls. I use Huginn as a butler for information in twitter, forums, etc. Facebook has been a tough nut to crack though.
