Avicebron··on AI is destroying my CS degree
Isn't having something that can solve general problems based on prior art without the requisite effort in learning the prior art completely antithetical to education in general? Not saying they aren't useful tools, but asking a an AI to write bubble sort isn't learning bubble sort? The point was never to write bubbles sort it was to learn how and why.
Avicebron··on Anthropic's growth just flattened
A lot of people have jobs that aren't limited by how much "stuff" they generate.
Avicebron··on Egoless Mathematics in the AI Era
That was a great read.

I'll add my favorite. The Anvil of the World. rip Kage Baker.
Avicebron··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
It's a really bad look, I saw that Proton issued some sort of half-baked apology. But nothing from Andy.
Avicebron··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
Hilariously this was also around the time that the Ferengi started being written more sympathetically.
Avicebron··on Police chief unplugs cameras after Flock ignores contract cancellation
Depends on how you frame it I suppose. If your experience is that every candidate in the last 20+ years has been a different flavor of awful for the average jane you could say it's zen-like acceptance.
Avicebron··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
I mean, some of the richest most influential people of our time are operating from a handful of science fiction books. Star trek is at least tonally more humanitarian than Snow Crash.
Avicebron··on Police chief unplugs cameras after Flock ignores contract cancellation
People need to see their lives improve materially within a reasonable period of time before they will trust politics again I would wager. I don't think people aren't voting due to apathy, they aren't voting because they don't trust the system.

Avicebron··on Anthropic's Mythos-class model allegedly leaked on Hugging Face
That would be an impressive display of a survival instinct.
Avicebron··on Chinese markets lose trillions as race for AI supremacy with US takes its toll
This is what I've been getting at, China is on a razors edge.

EDIT: which sucks, we need to move all of their unitree stuff here ASAP, also move the drone stuff out of ukraine. I have a vision for a unified defense framework, but no one listens to old men yelling at clouds.

Avicebron··on The Duty of a Scholar
> All this talk of "truth" and "duty" implies some larger context in which such abstractions would be evaluated.

I suppose not engaging with these principles however vague would reduce down to an immediate, might makes right cause-benefit analysis for any given situation. I think it's probably good that people still hold themselves to some standards, regardless of how universally comparable they are across different people.

Avicebron··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
I think he means polticians lying, being trecherous, compromising until nothing gets done and no ones career is hurt, etc is a skill. It would be better for the people if people with these skills were not in public office. Anything that takes away from being a servant to the constituents and become self-service needs to be removed from Politics.
Avicebron··on Tell HN: Scribd Breached
Is resignation because nothing was ever fixed or done about it because it wasn't "economically viable" considered not caring?
Avicebron··on OpenAI raises less than half of $30B target

Avicebron··on Through Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart taught us the measure of a man
As a long time paid Proton user I'm looking for alternatives. Nothing I've seen from Andy Yen these past few days has given me a shred of confidence in the leadership there..
Avicebron··on Through Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart taught us the measure of a man
That works great in a utopian ideal where money isn't an issue. The Andy Yen's of the world become because being a petty tyrant in pursuit of profit is celebrated in some circles.
Avicebron··on Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews'

This kind of thinking is how you get trump 3.0 after you blame and alienate people who want their lives to improve.
Avicebron··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
Well, in some ways that would mean the "running the government like a business" people would get their wish. They allowed the business to get so big, it failed, they are punished alongside the company for the failure.
Avicebron··on The Hottest New Side Hustle Is Stripping Copper Wire and Posting About It
In case anyone was curious about where the economy is right now.
Avicebron··on We ran AI agent swarms in Minecraft and Mindustry
idk, you tell me, I can tell from your blog that you've adopted the trend. I'm probably much older than you, so I've seen the progression of these things since the internet as we know it existed. So I sort of understand the roots of the styling that people are adopting and can see it for what it is, which is trying to signal a minimalism but missing the point in the process.
Avicebron··on We ran AI agent swarms in Minecraft and Mindustry
No? There is originality between a fetishization/bastardization of minimalism on one side and cookie cutter LLM web design on the other.
Avicebron··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
If you have sources I would be curious, even the Chinese language ones I've found have seemed, lacking, for want of a better word.
Avicebron··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
> It has always struck me as absurd that America is so accessible to Chinese nationals.

The US as a whole is accessible to a ton of foreign nationals because there was a push in like the 70s-early 2000s to offshore as much as possible to developing nations and exploit the arbitrage of wage labor back home. That was coupled with a foreign policy that was essentially trying to assimilate the cultures through that trade relation. Obviously China didn't reciprocate that, and many other places didn't either. But the America side of that open door policy (sentiment really) hasn't really gone away, even with the more recent immigration stuff.

I was responding to the claim that "China" or "Chinese as a whole" have higher IQs, that's not really what's happening. Which is why I brought up India, because it's a similar situation, lots and lots of people, plenty of those people are really smart. But it's a measure of a distribution, not really meaningful when talking about the people as whole themselves. Which itself is reductionist.

Avicebron··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
I think it's hard to get a good read on China's actual economic situation from the outside. Which, in itself, speaks to larger issues as we would understand them in the West.
