Beldur··on Unesco calls for global ban on smartphones in schools
Not sure about you guys, but I plan to not give my kids a phone until they reach at least the age of 14 (7 and 3 atm)

Is this realistic? Any experiences?

Beldur··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
Some month ago they removed the Speed Up option when watching YT on TV. This basically costs me hours of my life as I normally watch videos on 1.5 speed...
Beldur··on All the best engineering advice I stole from non-technical people (2019)
While playing the game of GO, I learned something related:

Don't go on a hunt when your house is on fire

Beldur··on Never use a dependency that you could replace with an afternoon of programming
From the GO Proverbs:

,,A little copying is better than a little dependency."

Beldur··on Independence, autonomy, and too many small teams
I think this is where the "beyond budgeting" movement comes in.

Beldur··on 1-on-1 meeting questions
In a study that was done by the guys at Manager-Tools, they found out that a 1o1 every 4 weeks is worse than no 1o1 at all.
Beldur··on React Table is a “headless” UI library
Google Sheets is based on canvas. Works pretty good for me.
Beldur··on Questions to ask a company during a job interview
In my experience it's important to not ask "easy" questions that can be answered by a simple yes/no.

Instead of: Are you friendly to remote work? Ask: Will I be working with anyone who is remote, or who works from home on a regular basis?

Instead of: Is the work life balance good? Ask: How responsive are people to emails/Slack over the weekends and after 6pm?

Instead of: Can I have a good career path? Ask: Did any of your senior engineers start out as junior engineers here?

Beldur··on I’ve spent five years writing a JavaScript framework
There's a proverb for the Go programming language which says: ,,A little copying is better than a little dependency."
Beldur··on Ask HN: What are the signs that you have a great manager?
- They always told the truth (to everybody).

- They knew their stuff (tech, system, user domain).

- They figured out the right thing to do.

- They communicated often and flawlessly.

- They did whatever it took to get the right thing done.

- They smiled almost all the time.

- They made each other person feel special.

- They made work fun.

- They were always teaching something.

- They called bullshit instantly.

- They protected their team.

- They inspired us by showing how good things could be.

Beldur··on SF hospital charged $15K ‘trauma response fee’ for baby that needed no treatment
My personal story from Germany: My 14 month old son got a deaseae in the spine so he could not walk anymore.

We spent 4 weeks in the hospital. 1 week until it was diagnosed in the MRT, 3 weeks with 3 different antibiotic treatment and another two month antibiotics at home.

All this while my wife continued to study for her PHD so I stayed away from work and lived with my son in the hospital.

This whole experience did cost us around 200€ (incl. gasoline to drive to the hospital) while still getting full income from my employer.

Beldur··on Tesla aims to start pilot production of Model 3 cars on February 20

Beldur··on AlphaGo given honorary 9 dan rank by Korean Baduk Association
At the press conference after the 4th game it was mentioned that AlphaGo was not trained on professional games at all.

They used strong amateur player games from public archives.

It was also mentioned that AlphaGo needs millions of games to be trained. Even if they added a few hundred Lee Sedol games, the impact would be very small.

It seems they approached the problem with a new solution: https://cloud.google.com/sql/docs/sql-proxy

,,The Cloud SQL Proxy provides secure access to your Cloud SQL Second Generation instances. ... It is especially useful when connecting from clients with dynamic IP address, such as Managed VM and Google Container Engine applications."

Beldur··on Why We Need a ViewBox Property in CSS
I also build a product Configurator for my company that is used by hundres of thousends of customers every month.

Beldur··on Instant.io – Streaming file transfer over WebTorrent
In Germany at least, downloading is not a big problem as is sharing and uploading.
Beldur··on Instant.io – Streaming file transfer over WebTorrent
Does it mean that whenever I click on a link I must be afraid that my computer will start to participate in a filesharing network?

What if a website uses the technology to spread copyrighted material in the background without me knowing about it? Maybe the website had a simple XSS hole that allowed an attacker to do it?

So later I will get a fine for spreading copyrighted material and I don't even know where it came from?
