Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Do we need to move away from Elm?
I love Elm. We use it in production, though we're not primarily a "web" company and it's used for admin UIs and simple SPAs.

Nothing in Javascript / HTML is very stable--I've hitched my wagon to so many stars that burned out. Everything from XSLT to JQuery to Bootstrap. So the fact that probably, something will replace Elm doesn't bother me.

It works now, it's stable, and it hides most of the crap from me so I can just code. It helps that I've been a "Functional Programmer" since 1980 when I first learned LISP, and that our core products are done in Erlang and F#.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Amazon's policies promote counterfeiting
Did you read the article? It says right at the top:

> There is something extremely simple Amazon could do about it. If you have a registered brand in the Brand Registry and don't sell the product wholesale - there could be one box to check for that.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on The Feds Can Now Probably Unlock Every iPhone Model
@dang why do you allow and encourage people to spread bald-faced off-topic lies?
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on The Feds Can Now Probably Unlock Every iPhone Model
For some reason, the Powers that Be at YCombinator allow unabated criticism of Israel, even if it's based on completely made-up facts.

Ok then. I guess Apple's a Chinese company or an Irish Company or a Singaporean company because they have subsidiaries--each with a local CEO--in each of those countries:

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on How Many Tesla Model 3 Cars Have Been Made?
So that's why those LEAF people are always driving 55 in the HOV lane!
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on How Many Tesla Model 3 Cars Have Been Made?
Exactly.

We own two electric cars: A Tesla P90D and a Chevy Bolt. The Bolt is an American Car, if that matters to you (it does for me) and has an EPA range of 238. (Consumer Reports got 250 in their tests).

We also have a car with an ICE -- a Chevy Volt. It gets 55 miles on all-electric, and has a gas engine too. Handy for when I have to do the occasional long drive and don't want to worry about superchargers, etc.

The Bolt isn't as glamorous as the Tesla S, but it's certainly nicer than the LEAF golf-cart.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Train your brain to deconvolve blurry images instead of using reading glasses
I haven't tried the glasses-off product yet, past their demonstration pages, but I did practice this technique for a while based on the recommendations of a friend who similarly discovered it.

The "trick" as I see it is to become comfortable enough with the appearance of blurry text, and be relaxed enough so your eyes aren't constantly trying to focus, and straining the muscles. Once your eyes relax, it's amazing how well a person who's already a proficient reader can get enough information out of blurry text to read at normal speeds. In fact after a while, my brain kicks in and I'd swear that the text is sharp, even though if I pay too much attention it will appear blurry again as I realize my mind is playing tricks on me.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Open Source Color Management Is Broken
Many of my (Hollywood) clients need to do color grading and other accurate color work.

What platforms do they all use? Not Macintosh, despite its reputation for being the platform for "graphics professionals" (it was missing 10 bit/channel color until very recently). And not Linux, despite its use in render farms.

They use Windows 10 and HP DreamColor monitors. That's the only platform that works and works well for people who need to care about color.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on The Boys Are Not All Right
Girls aren't pulling the triggers? The "modern" school shooting was invented by a girl in San Diego when a Brenda Spencer shot up an elementary school:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_Elementary_School_sh...

There was even a pop song written about the incident.

And more recently, Tafsheen Malik, shot up a San Bernadino workplace along with her husband.

And a woman along with her husband went on a shooting rampage in Vegas in 2014. http://abcnews.go.com/US/las-vegas-cop-killers-husband-wife-...

Women were persons of interest in the most recent Vegas shooting, and the wife of the Pulse gunman was arrested in connection with the murders (http://abcnews.go.com/US/wife-pulse-nightclub-gunman-omar-ma...).

Women can and do pick up guns and murder.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Why has CPU frequency ceased to grow? (2014)
Exactly! Rust doesn't solve any parallelism problems. It's no better than established languages like C# or F#, and probably worse.
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Money Laundering via Author Impersonation on Amazon
Amazon is rapidly turning into eBay at its worst. It's very hard to buy things there. I used to send my 85 year old mom to Amazon to buy things, but she has trouble distinguishing name-brand items sold and fulfilled by Amazon from scammy clones. (And those pop-ups for extended warranties aren't good either.)

The fact that they let fake customer support numbers appear in Amazon hosted forums is reprehensible. And facilitating identity theft and money laundering seems downright criminal. I hope this victim can get the attention of a prosecutor.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Why has CPU frequency ceased to grow? (2014)
In fact, there is! Erlang is extremely parallel. Processes are lightweight, share nothing, and run on as many CPUs you have.
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Visa confirms Coinbase wasn’t at fault for overcharging users
I would hope that Coinbase would contact the FBI about this, and that the FBI would take it seriously.
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on MacOS may lose data on APFS-formatted disk images
You appear to have an agenda of protecting Apple.

The title is very clear, and the first paragraph which you quoted explains it in detail.

It's significant that an established respected company--the makers of Carbon Copy Cloner--will not support APFS formatted disk images for its backups.

While your agenda may be driven by the need to protect Apple, the rest of us need to know this important news about APFS so we can be fully informed.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on MongoDB gets support for multi-document ACID transactions
What I like most about MongoDB is that it's "web scale"

http://www.mongodb-is-web-scale.com/

It's because of shards. Shards are the secret ingredient in the web scale sauce. They just work.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on How to find hidden cameras (2002) [pdf]
Yes we did! How have you been?
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on How to find hidden cameras (2002) [pdf]
I used to be in the R&D department for a large company that included a major movie studio. They wanted to develop a system that would find people filming the screen in theaters.

The system worked by exploiting the fact that all cameras at that time, including phone cameras, had a IR filter over the sensor that was a retro-reflector at IR wavelengths.

Behind the screen at three separated places were three IR sources and detector cameras.

If the detector cameras at the same points as the sources saw a bright dot from any two of the three locations that was coming back from the illuminator (the light was modulated so we could determine if it was ours) we knew we had a camera!

The system worked, but deployment in theaters never happened in a big way, other than a few theaters used for screenings in LA.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Linux'izing your Windows PC into a dev machine
Because you want to run real software, too! There's nothing like the Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, plus great backup utilities, media playing and management, etc. If you're targeting Linux, run it in a VM so if you screw something up, your host OS stays intact.
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Linux'izing your Windows PC into a dev machine
I develop on Windows 10, and I don't try to "Linuxize" at all, even though we often deploy on Linux.

I do use ConEmu, but I use PowerShell as my shell, don't run WSL or Cygwin. All our devtools (Erlang, CUDA C/C++, Python) run fine in Windows and using Windows as it was meant to be without any "shims" makes it much easier to deal with differences in file nameing conventions, path separators, etc.

Plus, PowerShell really is the Best Shell Ever.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Sandboxed Mac apps can record screen any time without you knowing
Windows 10 closed this hole.
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Student Loan Debt Clock
I graduated college (Hofstra University) debt-free. (B.S. (Math) and M.S. (Computer Science).

I took the bus to campus, live at home, and worked while in school.

So part of me says "why should kids who wanted to live in a country-club atmosphere far away from home on borrowed money for 4 years get a bailout?"

However, I also realize the crippling seriousness of the problem.

I think the immediate solution is: The Governments Should Get Out of the Student Loan Business. Now. Allow private companies to give loans, but they're like any other unsecured loan, and you can cover them in a bankruptcy.

Tuition will drop like a rock! And maybe people will realize that not everyone has a "right" to go away to a country club for 4 years on borrowed (or someone else's) money.

Only if the Government stops backing student loans would I be happy with any sort of loan "forgiveness" program. And I think these people's creditworthiness should forever be tarnished.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Meltdown-Spectre: Malware is already being tested by attackers
Here's how it can be exploited:

A popup that says "Intel has detected your computer is vulnerable to Meltdown. Click here to install the fix."

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Slack is not for me
For software developers, the best way to communicate is through the bug database. Developers don't use "slack" at our company.

Of course, it may be different for sales and support people, etc.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on 'Fiction is outperforming reality': how YouTube's algorithm distorts truth
> An ex-YouTube insider reveals how its recommendation algorithm promotes divisive clips and conspiracy videos. Did they harm Hillary Clinton’s bid for the presidency?

So the reason people didn't vote for Hillary was that they were fooled by videos they saw on the Internet? Is this what people who are upset their candidate didn't win believe, even one year after the election?

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on How Google Chrome’s ad blocker works
The ADT company hired and trusted convicted serial killer Dennis Rader to install alarms. He'd then defeat the alarms and go in to the houses to bind, torture, and kill his victims.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Rader#Early_life_and_ca...

Your analogy is good. Google and Chrome Adblocker is just like ADT and the "BTK Killer".

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Bill Nye Does Not Speak for Us and He Does Not Speak for Science
I've subscribed to Scientific American for the past 40 years. I'm dropping it now.

To claims someone is no longer credible because he accepted an invitation to hear a President's State of the Union speech is outrageous. You know what no longer "Speaks for Science?" Scientific American.

Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Decoding the Design of In-Flight Seat Belts
What always puzzles me are those seat-belt extenders. I've seen passengers on planes that probably couldn't fit through an overwing exit door without getting stuck. Think how dangerous that could be! The seatbelts should be long enough to accomodate the largest passenger who can safely fit in a seat (and I'm pretty sure they are -- they're already huge) and there should be no extenders.
Bitcoin_McPonzi··on Only 13 arrests in 7 years of SF online auto break-in reports, DA says
The majority of the people in San Francisco just don't see auto break-ins as a priority. In fact, they sympathize with the people who break into cars, as they seem them as an underclass that is forced to do this to survive.
