CaioAlonso··on Our nation cannot censor its way back to cultural health
Is that a problem?
CaioAlonso··on Firefox 96
I've become conditioned to react to Firefox version announcements with 'I wonder how Mozilla has screwed up the browser this time'. Either by introducing useless features or by removing options I considered useful. I hope I'm wrong this time.

CaioAlonso··on All Atari Games
I have no idea about the legal situation of distributing ROMs and an emulator for Atari 2600.
CaioAlonso··on All Atari Games
In case you want to play any of them I made a thing a few years ago for that https://cloudflare-ipfs.com/ipfs/QmacAqRVhJX9eS7YJX1vY3ifFKF...

CaioAlonso··on Firefox 77
Why do I have to opt-out of this? This should be opt-in.
CaioAlonso··on Firefox 77
Time to fork, I guess.
CaioAlonso··on Firefox 77
I would financially support a fork of Firefox with all the garbage removed. The home page bullshit, Pocket, all the automatic requests made without user action, and more that I probably don't know of.
CaioAlonso··on Amazon deforestation: Brazil's Bolsonaro dismisses data as 'lies'
That's not what the link says.
CaioAlonso··on Think in Math, Write in Code
"The natural language which has been effectively used for thinking about computation, for thousands of years, is mathematics."

I'm not sure if this is true. Harold Abelson creates the distinction[1] between Mathematics being the study of truth and Computing being the study of process. It seems to me that these really are different things and Mathematics isn't the "natural language" to discuss computations, but rather truth and patterns. But of course process (computing) can only happen within the boundaries of mathematical truths and patterns.

CaioAlonso··on It's time to update the software update process
If it is my computer, I'd like the right to not update it and keep using it just the way it currently is.

I don't think the proposed solution is reasonable because it violates a lot of assumptions about the things I own and use.

CaioAlonso··on Shocking response from Facebook about request to remove this offensive page
It says "Tape her and rape her". If this isn't encouraging rape, I don't know what would be then.

Just because people are laughing doesn't mean it isn't encouraging horrible behavior by making certain actions seem less disgusting.

CaioAlonso··on Why do Linux distros have different package names?
With a collective market share of 1%, I find it hard to believe that the reason Linux distributions use incompatible package names is to get revenue from usage statistics.

Maybe we should use Hanlon's razor here: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

CaioAlonso··on Ask HN: Why github repos don't have a share button?
It's probably the reverse of this same logic: "Why do not they just copy and paste the link wherever they want to share it?"
CaioAlonso··on Should startups bother having original ideas if big companies can clone them?
Good point.
CaioAlonso··on Should startups bother having original ideas if big companies can clone them?
Dropbox had a good idea, big companies cloned them, and they're still around.
CaioAlonso··on To stream everywhere, Netflix encodes each movie 120 times
Exactly. When The Pirate Bay has an infinite catalog, they can't afford to be picky.
CaioAlonso··on Building my Own Laptop
>so it’s possible to build a complete firmware from source with no opaque blobs

So this means that this will probably appeal to the free software people that only use 100% free computers?

CaioAlonso··on The Great Python.org Redesign

CaioAlonso··on Show HN: Powderkeg, a realtime, synchronous, multiplayer HTML5 action game
I visited the site using Firefox Nightly and it said: "Powderkeg can't run on your browser. Would you mind coming back with either Google Chrome or Firefox?".
CaioAlonso··on “I am calling you from Windows”: A tech support scammer
The scam site: http://windows4pc.webs.com/

EDIT: Webs.com has just frozen it.

CaioAlonso··on Quantum physics at a distance
I'm not sure this is FTL communication. I guess this method still requires a conventional communication link.

CaioAlonso··on Facebook To Buy Opera? Maybe.
Only if you enable Opera Turbo (http://www.opera.com/browser/turbo/), which came disabled by default on my installation.
CaioAlonso··on Ubuntu Releases 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin
I heard they did a lot of testing with dist-upgrades from 11.10, 11.04 and even 10.10. But doing a backup wouldn't hurt, right?
