DoingIsLearning··on Airborne plastic levels shock researchers (chronic DEHP/DiNP/DEHT exposure)
They mentioned 'airborne' but how do they distinguish plasticizers introduced by airborne particles and plasticizers introduced by showering or washing hands and rubbing detergents on the wristband for example?
DoingIsLearning··on The other British invasion: how UK lingo conquered the US
> It's not a "Leicester" piss take.

It's a funny example but to be fair to the British that also happens in other Germanic languages and it also happens a hell of a lot more in Romance languages.

DoingIsLearning··on Linus Torvalds muses about maintainer gray hairs and the next 'King of Linux'
I think it's also cultural. British for example are very worried abou sub-text and saving face. West coast americans are more worried about coming across as positive and use superlatives that other cultures find exagerated.

Nordic and Central Europe cultures value 'straight talk' and saying what you will do, and doing what you say you will do. Generally when you ask for feedback you are expected to have a thick skin when professors/experts review your work.

I am not excusing abuse but I am pointing out that it is misguided to look at one work culture through the lens of another.

DoingIsLearning··on The Double Irish Dutch Sandwich: End of a Tax Evasion Strategy

DoingIsLearning··on The Double Irish Dutch Sandwich: End of a Tax Evasion Strategy
Curiosity questions is the revenue that is localized in Ireland and the Netherlands because of the double sandwich, of any significance in terms of percentage of total taxed revenue in those countries?

From memory Ireland and the Netherlands are also the biggest contributors to EU funding. So I am wondering how this shift would affect EU dynamics as a whole?

DoingIsLearning··on Making things people want vs. making things that alter thinking
I agree with the principle of paradigm shifting. But many of these modern examples are just exploring the concept of bypassing regulations in a regulated space (Uber, Airbnb, etc.)

DoingIsLearning··on State of S3 – Your Laptop is no Laptop anymore – a personal Rant
Words matter in this case.

The fact that they are pushing S3 as "Linux Sleep" or "Legacy Sleep" and S0ix as "modern sleep" is absolutely not innocent from a marketing perspective.

We ought to reverse Uno this non-sense. Perhaps the Linux Foundation and all the distro development teams out there should start calling S3 _True_Sleep_™ in all their official communication.

DoingIsLearning··on The German problem? It's an analogue country in a digital world
> It is not uncommon to receive CDs for x-rays or similar to take to another specialist. Makes you cringe.

As a counter point I have (in multiple industrialized countries) asked for DICOM files of my exams (following past injuries) to keep with me, since I changed countries a far bit. I always got confused shoulder shrugs from staff since there is never a "procedure" to safely share it outside their PACS.

At best I only got grubby screenshots in a pdf report, and only once I got a physical CD because I had a bit of small talk with the Radiography Technician directly.

I am not saying Germany is great but there is absolutely value in having physical offline storage of your data.

DoingIsLearning··on One Laptop per Child
The screen was a transflective LCD display from Pixel Qi.

Pixel Qi was always one of those companies I thought should have succeeded but didn't.

This a decent walk through of their timeline in tech history:

https://goodereader.com/blog/electronic-readers/the-rise-and...

Still today I would love to have a minimalist 'typewriter' laptop that I could work with just sitting outdoors in full sun.

Your bias is heavily US centric. HN is not SF or SV. Plenty of users in Serbia, Nigeria, Argentina, Brazil, Vietnam, in war thorn Ukraine.

Arguably the average user is above average for their area's COL but to claim everyone is swimming in VC money is as dilusion as the people you want to portrait in your comment.

Drone maybe but you underestimate the speed of a rocket.

Also computation power adds payload weight or makes your system dependent on a server side comms link.

I am not sure what the solution is but restricting these models away from open source usually just means denying access to the public, while bad actors will still find a way to use it or discover it (with just slightly more effort).

DoingIsLearning··on Open Letter to the European Commission
> The application processes are wildly untransparent, run by local bureaucrats under multiple layers of abstraction.

I was surprised to find a few years back that the big consultancy companies actually have teams dedicate to advising companies on these applications and supporting documents. Helping them navigate the complexity.

If you need to pay consultancy companies to navigate the process then you just killed access to smaller companies and universities in less well off economies.

DoingIsLearning··on The upstream cause of the youth mental health crisis is the loss of community
I'm gonna be a old man shouting at the clouds. But co-living spaces work because they are generally small projects and have very driven and charismatic people leading those projects.

The moment something like that grows or scales to a tipping where real estate funds take interest then it will naturally enshitify as most things in society that have been monetized by large scale investors.

I agree with everything you said but with the risk of gate keeping I worry that the only way co-living projects will work is by having a bunch of stubborn fun people starting it off and keeping it at a non-industrial scale.

DoingIsLearning··on France high-speed rail traffic disrupted by 'malicious acts' on Olympic ceremony

Russia coordinating attacks on NATO territory is FAR more likely (read certain) considering recent activity:

"Vandalism", "Malicious acts", "coordinated attacks", this is the language being used by European media.

Traditional media is doing EU citizens a disservice. This is state sponsored terrorism and we need to start calling a spade a spade.

Even without cameras I am pretty sure (from my past reading on ADAS systems) that you can infer driver attention from steering wheel angle position.

If you analyze patterns in wheel angle and rate of change of angle over time, I would suspect that drvers who are texting/'looking down a screen' are going to have very distinct series of 'abrupt' correction patterns.

Where that telemetry is available in cars post 2010's then it should absolutely be used in forensics.

DoingIsLearning··on Money and Happiness: Extended Evidence Against Satiation
My absolutely non-scientific gut feeling is that if billionaires were not as influential and carried as much weight as they do in media, that we would be able to assess them as mentally disturbed in no way different to Plyushkin's disorder or some strain of sociopathic behaviour.

From a game theory stand point a billionaire won. Carve your name in history, you can choose to influence politics for the good, pour money into hard research problems in Healthcare, Environment, Energy. Go Genghis Khan and have a thousand children. They could do literally anything and yet choose to continue to increase value for shareholders and themselves, it seems illogical.

This part resonated:

".. When you let go of something you are holding too tightly, even though it's hurting you. When you let go of it, then you are able to pick up something else that is hopefully better for you."

Despite all the post-rationalization on the why's of medicine, it does feel like he is someone bouncing back from Burnout.

The risk being that he may fall into the opposite end of the pendulum swing. As the saying goes: "A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."

In the end there is a balance to everything, I hope he finds his.

DoingIsLearning··on Speed limiters now mandatory in all new EU cars
Not sure why you are getting downvoted.

Urban design is a much more effective approach to saving lives (a large fraction of speeding deaths are pedestrians) with the bonus of giving large areas of the city back to pedestrians.

"Traffic calming" is a well established evidence based field. [0]

DoingIsLearning··on Guide to attending a space launch in person
This is very high on my bucket list.

As a European what is the political situation to visit Baikonur? Is it just leased ground as a military base but Kazakhstan is sovereign? Or is it similar to an embassy ground and you are technically stepping into Russian Federation territory by visiting the launch site?
