Dreami··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
Thanks a lot! Did you do this sequentially with each CD, or did you have any concurrency with multiple drives?
Dreami··on Why media fans want to escape algorithms with CDs, DVDs and vinyl
I have a huge collection (100-200) of CDs from a relative that I would like to store the same way. Can you explain your setup?
Dreami··on Self-Powered Trailers Promise Leaner Freight Runs
At least from the truckers I watch on YouTube from Germany, there is already a shortage of rest stops for trucks. Sometimes you can see them even in the entrance of the rest stops, parked in a dangerous spot. If they all have to charge, then that becomes a problem, because they can’t find a space even „creatively“.

Not saying that electric trucks are bad, just one more problem to solve

Dreami··on HandyMKV for MakeMKV and HandBrake Automation
Thank you! I don’t have many DVDs (and only PAL), but it’s good to hear that I would need to be careful when ripping them
Dreami··on HandyMKV for MakeMKV and HandBrake Automation
Can you explain why it ruins the DVD encodes? I like this community to learn stuff
Dreami··on LearnixOS
From the name I thought this was about learning NixOS, and they found a very clever name

Maybe the author could add a small note that this is not about that, and refer to something official about NixOS?

Anyway, I like the idea of the project!

Dreami··on Ask HN: Do you still use a hand held/desktop calculator?
Yes, although not as much. But I still keep my TI Nspire CX CAS charged for when I need it (needed it during my CS studies for adjacent topics). Specifically the CAS version is nice because it can simplify algebra for you, and even solve/rewrite an expression for a specific variable. There’s probably something I can use on my computer, I do like the ergonomics of the calculator though
Dreami··on SwiftData
They are actually of the same age, the iPhone 8 and X came out at the same time (yes it’s still confusing now)
Dreami··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
Just for reference: if you need Subtitles on an OLED, e.g. on Netflix you can set the subtitles to grey (only in the Web app, but is used on all other apps). Had that same problem with the OLED
Dreami··on The end of the manual transmission is near?
In Switzerland, most instructor cars are Diesels, since they have higher torque and are very hard to stall. Then you go home and drive your parent's petrol engine car and you stall it all the time
Dreami··on The History of ‘Ampersand’ (2020)
In German it's called the Kaufmanns-Und (roughly merchant's/salesman's And). I think it may be related to advertising, if you advertise a product name (or a producer name) with an "and" in it, the ampersand is much shorter and more visually appealing
Dreami··on Formula E Gen3: The world’s most efficient race car
To be honest, when I was very young, there was always the thrill something unexpected might happen on TV, and crashes were part of that. But this has quickly faded. I only dimly remember the Bianchi incident, at the time watching I didn't think too much of it. The Grosjean incident though was really something, and I got similar vibes a few weeks ago with the Schumacher (Mick) incident where he wasn't shown for a short time
Dreami··on Tcl the Misunderstood (2006)
Has there been an attempt at doing a shell?
Dreami··on KeePassXC 2.5.2
(to GP) I really have to say, this is not how you should ask someone else to fix a problem. Going at the developers on a personal level is NEVER a good thing. If it was my project, I probably would have closed the issue completely after you insulted me this personally.
Dreami··on Paris’ Problem with the Dead
I think in Switzerland it's about 25 years until your plot gets recycled
Dreami··on The Architecture of Open Source Applications
Could you elaborate a bit? I don't know much of their code base (but I've used it as a user) and I'm curious as to what is done wrong.
Dreami··on Turnover Hits Apple’s Famed Industrial Design Team
That sounds really interesting. You don't happen to have any pictures of it? I didn't find anything through Google, just that it existed.
Dreami··on 1500 Private Jets Fly to Davos for Climate Talks
I think the problem is security. Here in Switzerland, there's demos in various cities and also of course at Davos. If you would put them in trains, it would be harder to do it safely.

(of course, why they even need so much security is another thing)

Dreami··on German Addresses are Blocked: www.gutenberg.org
Edit: sent a feedback email, didn't see the address before.
Dreami··on German Addresses are Blocked: www.gutenberg.org
Wow, this is weird. I'm from Switzerland and I'm getting blocked since "I'm from Germany". They say to check Maxmind's DB and it clearly says Switzerland too.

This reminds me of services blocking Switzerland because of EU regulations, even though it's not part of the EU. But country-specific blocking and misreading Switzerland for Germany, that's a new level.

* it says they update the DB every month, so that could be an issue. It just seems a bit too wrong for me.

Dreami··on Is Your Cat 6 Cable a Dog? (2013)
Does "maintaining 10 GBit" only confirm Cat6? I don't want to * on your recommendation, just want to be nit-picky about these things after such an article :)
Dreami··on Letter from the publisher: Delivery of Union-Tribune affected by computer virus
It is even blocked in Switzerland, which is NOT part of the EU, merely in Europe...
Dreami··on Quora User Data Compromised
I too got one email and I'm not sure now if I'm affected (I got the same content as on the website in this email)
Dreami··on Why Are Antiques So Cheap? Because Everyone Lives in the Kitchen
Do you have a link to that YouTube series? Could be interesting for when I've nothing else to do.
Dreami··on Youth-apprenticeship program in Colorado mirrors a successful Swiss model
One point I see, if your kid would go for an apprenticeship with the attention of going to a uni of applied sciences later, but then you decide to move to another country. But that's kind of something I can imagine, since your kid could also simply stay there and live as an adult.
Dreami··on Youth-apprenticeship program in Colorado mirrors a successful Swiss model
As a Swiss citizen, I really, really like our model. The only problem I see, is that foreign people from all kind of countries don't know this system and think that their kids have to go to a "Gymnasium" to reach a university-level education later. That's probably something we should emphasize more!
Dreami··on Skype rolls back its redesign by ditching stories and squiggles
Just for nitpicking, the Wikipedia article says Wii U too (although I know that was a failure, I was just looking for this because it seemed interesting)
Dreami··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
As far as I understand, it's just electromagnetic waves. No current passing through to the car, but the coil can "register" a change in its magnetic field and can determine that it's a car and how fast it goes
Dreami··on Ask HN: What all is broken/frustrating in software engineering
There's a site where you can learn solve "interview-style" questions, https://leetcode.com Just heard of it recently on HN
Dreami··on IBM laying off 50-70% of Watson Health
I get a error saying that Amazon Cloudfront is blocking this from my country. I'm from Switzerland (which is NOT part of the EU), does this happen to everyone?
