EvilLook··on An encrypted message to Edward Snowden
Hey there Kevin, how does US Attorney cock taste?

Anybody with any sense knows you're a plant, not a hacker, and your hacking charges were laid there by the US Attorney to give you cover to turn on real hackers. Wired has been part of the compromised media from the day they published anything written by you.

EvilLook··on Bank robbery suspect wants NSA phone records for his defense
>So why should the prosecution get a free pass, if they are using cell phone records to prosecute the the other men but don't have any to tie Brown to the area they should be able to just assume his guilt.

Welcome to America where you are not allowed on a jury if you even hint that police officers are human and therefore capable of error or dishonesty.

TAILS is actually now done by the Tor Project, so I think they have a vested interest in vetting it before it is released.

As we can see in Japan because no true Japanese person lets their work take away from their family life.

We can also see this in Foxconn assembly lines, the home of the work/life balance in China.

EvilLook··on Humble Indie Bundle 8
It's probably harder to create a "unit bundle" key with Valve for Steam if you're only going to sell this bundle once and never in the future. You don't need any coordination with Valve to give away Steam keys. You only need coordination with the game developer.
EvilLook··on Four Steps to Google, Without a Degree
I hope step one is making your site work on tablets because your site doesn't work on the Kindle Fire browser.
EvilLook··on Massive Number of Vulnerabilities Found in X.Org
These seem like such basic errors. Not validating responses because you trust the software you interact with to behave is such a basic mistake that you'd think the people that work on the X server from X.Org would have learned not to do that long ago.
EvilLook··on In China, Hacking Has Widespread Acceptance
The reason that the blame is shifted toward "hackers" is that being proactive with security, while the right thing to do, costs money and time. In a market where software from different vendors is usually only determined by price and update frequency spending additional money and time is a competitive disadvantage. However, if you can push your security failings off onto "hackers" not only do you minimize costs but your customers, if they're not sufficiently savvy to this game, think that you're the better vendor because you're able to "beat hackers at their own game".

Nowhere is this mindset more prevalent than in the anti-virus software field, which of course is another can of worms itself.

EvilLook··on Can gaming be the turning point for Linux on the desktop?
I'll agree with you and take it one step further.

Windows is a better desktop for consumption of media. All of the major music, television show, and movie stores run there. Virtually all of the gaming digital download stores run there. Almost all of the file sharing applications run there. All of the TV tuner hardware works there. If you want to consume media the Windows is ideal. Even though Windows is an ideal desktop for the consumption of media there is something much more important.

Windows holds the lead as the top desktop for the production of anything creative: code, graphics, music, videos, and games. While certain parts of this may not be without frustration (I'm looking at you, Visual Studio) the support provided is generally superior to what you find in the Linux world (there is no Linux parallel to MSDN). Photoshop has no peer in the professional image manipulation world, though GIMP could fill that role for an ambitious amateur. Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premere or Sony Vegas are in no way threatened by any free software solution. While Ardour is amazing, Cubase and Pro Tools make it look like a joke in a professional environment.

Linux excels as the platform that ties the Internet together. Windows, by and large, sucks as a server. Any of the major free software mail transfer agents (sendmail, postfix, exim) blow Exchange Server out of the water for email (not counting all of the other things Exchange Server does). IIS is a sick joke compared to Apache, lighttpd, and nginx. Nobody can look me straight in the face and say FileZilla Server outclasses vsftpd or proftpd.

Now, the gaps are closing little by little. I think that the Windows consumption market is going to be cannibalized by Windows RT on tablets. I think that free software production tools are going to get better and better and eventually beat out their professional counterparts on Windows. I just don't think that day is today. Or next year. Or the next ten years.

EvilLook··on What Nikola Tesla vs. VCs video says about the state of Silicon Valley
Noblesse Oblige is dead. The ultra-rich hoard their wealth. They won't even invest in their own country by paying their taxes without tax shelters. What makes you think they would invest in something that might benefit others?
EvilLook··on What's next Google? Dropping SMTP support?
Or because it allows them to have a disconnected SMTP server that receives mail. It would be the solution that I would use if I had a multi-user mail server on a network that only occasionally dialed up to the Internet to send/receive mail but was otherwise disconnected.
EvilLook··on Skype for Linux 4.2
With the abundance of other video calling solutions on Linux that are cross platform is this just dead on arrival with Microsoft being able to read all of your messages?
EvilLook··on What's next Google? Dropping SMTP support?
>What will it look like? I would guess it will look like a two-part service, with one protocol for servers to talk to each other and another for clients to talk to servers.

So SMTP and POP3/IMAP?

>Servers will send tiny notifications to other servers that mail is available for their subscribers; then the receiving servers will retrieve the mail and cache it or store it for clients. This changes the spam problem fundamentally by requiring some persistence on the part of the sending server.

So NNTP?

EvilLook··on Mt. Gox Dwolla account frozen by DHS
At some point, if you're trying to move a lot of money, it's cheaper to buy tickets for multiple people and split the amount of cash they can carry to some fraction of the maximum amount allowed out by law and then combine on the receiving end. If you're a powerful enough person (or dangerous enough) you can probably compel them to cooperate either based on compensation or intimidation.
EvilLook··on Ask HN: Is IRC really dead?
The IRC channels I go to (primarily non-technical outside of freenode and 2600net) have between fifty and 100 people in them on a daily basis. IRC is not dead. Certain networks, due to DDoS attacks or policy changes against file sharing, or incompetent operators are dying.

>Turning btc into a useful currency in the US and Europe is about as easy as its going to get.

But good luck trying to get the value out that you put in. Dollars and Euros are relatively stable compared to bitcoin. There is a much higher guarantee that you're going to get the same value out that you put in with Dollars or Euros compared to bitcoin. Bitcoin looks like a great investment until you actually try to turn it back into dollars or euros.

EvilLook··on Ask HN: Would you hire me?
It depends on what you use EC2 for. The experience I'm talking about isn't "with Linode". The experience is with taking a distribution that has none of the parts of the typical LAMP stack installed and installing and configuring them properly for the solution that you are providing.

Now experience with EC2 in provisioning many machines of the same configuration using something like Puppet or Chef is a related but separate thing, and is also good to have, but you have to be able to walk before you can run.

EvilLook··on Ask HN: Would you hire me?
If for some reason that is even too much take a look at the top providers on the Low End Talk Wiki here: http://www.lowendtalk.com/wiki/top-providers

Then keep an eye on Low End Box here: http://www.lowendbox.com

When one of those providers runs a deal then get it. If you don't want to have to shop deals then DigitalOcean is a good idea. I have trust issues with Linode so I can't recommend them anymore, and frankly, some of their guides are terrible.

You should be reading the documentation of the software as provided by the vendor of the software along with the docs of your distribution before you attempt any guide because quite often the guides will have you do something that won't work, is suboptimal, or just plain wrong. nginx has an entire section of their wiki dedicated to bad configurations from guides on the Internet and what you should be doing instead: http://wiki.nginx.org/Pitfalls

Understanding the full stack and being able to build it from scratch and tweak it gives you a competitive advantage over people who cannot, and that makes you look better to employers.

EvilLook··on HN no longer supporting SPDY
Have you measured your gains?
EvilLook··on Ask HN: Would you hire me?
It always does...now, do you deploy your own LAMP stack or do you let someone else handle that? Being able to set up your own environment/stack without someone doing it for you is a plus (even if company policy is that someone SHOULD do it for you) that you should be listing!
EvilLook··on HN no longer supporting SPDY
On behalf of people that are more interested in the communication than in the pronunciation, thank you. You could pronounce SPDY as "super dimension fortress" and SQL and "purple monkey dishwasher" and I wouldn't care as long as I knew what you were talking about.
EvilLook··on Ask HN: Would you hire me?
I'd hire you. I'd hire you so hard. (You know, if we were hiring...sorry.)

On a more serious note to get past my company's HR filter (which I can override, but the higher ups like it when I don't have to) how many years HTML/CSS/JS/PHP?

EvilLook··on A bill in Congress legalizes cell phone unlocking and fixes the DMCA
>Because democracy has to be bought these days.

What a naive thing to say. The cornerstone of representative government has always been supporting a candidate whose views align with your own. This includes campaign contributions along with voting for the candidate, volunteering for their campaign, and getting out word that they're running.

EvilLook··on Diablo III Economy Broken by an Integer Overflow Bug
Sorry, I was unclear. I was talking about Diablo III in my original comment and about it not having an offline mode or a mode where online play could be had on non-Blizard official servers (either dedicated server model or peer-to-peer).
EvilLook··on Diablo III Economy Broken by an Integer Overflow Bug
Not any more than SimCity 2013 was an MMO. There may have been free-to-play MMO-like monitization of every little thing but the game mechanics are all single-player/small-group-of-players.
EvilLook··on Diablo III Economy Broken by an Integer Overflow Bug
>Trust me, out of all the customers whose data you don't want to muss with, it's hardcore MMORPG players.

Welp, that's what happens when you have only online play on only official servers. Single player offline wouldn't be affected - cheat all you want! Online play on unofficial servers means server admins can take whatever action they want - ban offenders, leave offenders alone, or rollback - depending on what the admin and the players want.

EvilLook··on Linux is not about choice (2008)
Apparently I don't run desktop Linux either because I have no problems editing settings with a text editor, nor do I drool on myself when it comes to reading documentation.
