FiReaNG3L··on "People who don't use AI will be left behind"
Weird fallacy that if you use a tool you can't use your brain anymore
FiReaNG3L··on Show HN: NextDNS Adds "Bypass Age Verification"
Better than that at least in the UK, they are not handing the data to the government, but to unregulated, diverse third parties - what could go wrong.
FiReaNG3L··on GLP-1 pills are coming, and they could revolutionize weight-loss treatment
To all the 'actually it makes people eat less' - it just normalizes eating way too much, then magically solve it in 3-6 months and start again.
FiReaNG3L··on GLP-1 pills are coming, and they could revolutionize weight-loss treatment
Overconsumption leading to widespread obesity while a large fraction of the world is hungry - the capitalist solution? Let's invent a pill so we can eat EVEN MORE.
FiReaNG3L··on Canadian MPs suspected of treason kept anonymous and in office
Whats the alternative, remove MPs randomly when suspected / accused, reveal their names? Yeah, no problems with that either I can foresee.
FiReaNG3L··on Rebuilding memchess.com from its archive
Oh god, I'm so thankful for this, I was extremely sad when this disappeared, it was by far the best!
FiReaNG3L··on China reports human case of H3N8 bird flu
... anymore?
FiReaNG3L··on Show HN: Obsidian Canvas – An infinite space for your ideas
Obsidian has given me everything I had dreamed of in terms of organizing tools, and now this is the cherry on top! I tried so many mindmap software (many paid!) and they all fell short 20 different ways, this is great to see!
FiReaNG3L··on What things did you purchase that enhanced the quality of your life in 2022?
CO2 meter - small appartment, both of us working from home since COVID, windows shut at all times because of air quality / heating, found out we were living at very high average CO2 levels, instant fix for weird mental fatigue opening the windows whenever the levels are too high.
FiReaNG3L··on Tell HN: GitHub banned me permanently
VPN, pseudonym, don't reupload any previous projects, avoid contributing to same projects that created problems, behave better in the future? I don't see how they could 'hunt you'.
FiReaNG3L··on How a Stable Diffusion prompt changes its output for the style of 1500 artists
Or at the very least with the list of artists alphabetically sorted!
FiReaNG3L··on Ask HN: Why are online training classes divided into small chunks?
Much easier to record / update as well
FiReaNG3L··on Missing Darwin Notebooks Returned to Cambridge University Library
Thats assuming that the person that returned it is the same that stole it in the first place - I wouldn't be surprised if such an artefact has been sold a few times before finding someone decent that bought it to return it.
FiReaNG3L··on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to Retire
Completely agree with you - it doesn't even do justice to appoint candidates on positive discrimination, as it opens the candidate / legacy to 'the only reason they were there is that they are X minority'.
FiReaNG3L··on U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to Retire
Sure, you can see it that way, and positive discrimination is bad we can agree on.

But you can also see that pool of 7% containing top tier candidates ignored for the longest time - it's like a tree that nobody wanted the fruits of for the stupidest reason.

FiReaNG3L··on Why Ireland's housing bubble burst
The fun bit is that everything is 'overvalued' now - stock market, real estate, even crazy things (many parts of crypto such as NFTs, but also Pokemon cards and other collectables) are through the roof, where will all this money go? money out of a bubble has to go somewhere...

How far are we from the boomer generation leaving the market (one way or another)? This will create a lot of oversupply and negative pressure on prices I would assume - who will buy all their houses in the country, their share in the stock market? The answer to that is that we've been doing that already in the past decade with all the money printing / inflation / devaluation of wealth... not sure where the train stops and who will be left holding the bags.

FiReaNG3L··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Yeah I think there's a few million of those in the US
FiReaNG3L··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Sure, they're not the only way - but they are definitively the best way, and nothing is stopping this kind of study from happening, especially in low risk (age) groups / populations.
FiReaNG3L··on No Way to Grow Up
Counterpoint: at first it was extremely obvious that this virus was affecting you harder the older you are, with 60+ populations starting to be at risk. Nobody thought it was harming children.
FiReaNG3L··on Samoa Scraps Daylight Saving Time
When two sets of arbitrary non-sense rules collide!
FiReaNG3L··on The Applecare Hustle
Fun bit is that in this precise case, the people selling you the insurance are the same people that set the cost of repair... no way that they are inflating the second to justify the first, is it?
FiReaNG3L··on Stop using Zoom, Hamburg’s data protection agency warns state government
jitsi is exactly that, been using it for the whole pandemic for meetings for my team of 10 ppl, never had an issue.
FiReaNG3L··on Google employees who work from home could lose money
Turns out competing with the whole world and not who is ready to relocate to an extremely expensive area of the world brings downsides, who knew.

Time to realize that this 'work from home' push will lead to more globalization, and more loss of wealth / quality of life for the people of the West.

FiReaNG3L··on Burden of post-Covid-19 syndrome and implications for healthcare planning
No idea why you're getting downvoted - they have no control group and as you say there's 'depression' in their symptoms they count for. I'm pretty sure 'depression' (which I'm sure they don't count as clinically depressed, but 'im feeling more depressed') went up significantly in the whole population last year.

Also PLoS one is basically not peer reviewed - they accept every paper after a short review.

FiReaNG3L··on Jeff Bezos will step down as Amazon CEO on July 5
Which I hope makes it terribly clear thats BTC is a huge bubble
FiReaNG3L··on Analysis of blood markers predicts human lifespan limit
There's a lot of numerical symbolism in the bible, and 12 or powers of 12 (144, etc) really means 'a lot'
FiReaNG3L··on Face masks effectively limit the probability of SARS-CoV-2 transmission
No you didn't miss anything - most people upvoting this didn't read anything more than the title.
FiReaNG3L··on Astrobiologists have released the preliminary results of a SETI survey
Or an advanced enough civilization might on the contrary use their resources efficiently with long term planning and population control and stay on their planet / solar system - "advanced" and "ever-expanding" don't have to come together.
FiReaNG3L··on Japan's cherry blossom 'earliest peak since records began'
Wow, 1 generation survived all kinds of terrible events, so it surely means this was all made up and that there's no problems that could eventually lead to catastrophy over a 'long' period of time that is more than the lifespan of one human being.
FiReaNG3L··on Alarm as South Korea sees more deaths than births
Yes, same as the economy, too many things depend on infinite growth (retirement funds being the main one).
