Gare··on EFF is leaving X
10 years ago Wayland was in much worse state. It started being good in the last few years, though some features are still lacking.
Gare··on 21,864 Yugoslavian .yu domains
> and I don't think I know any pop stars with that background off the top of my head.

But Romania gave us the Dragostea din tei (Numa-numa song :)

In Croatia only Zagreb got changed to 10 000 (because capital), the rest stayed the same.
Gare··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Exactly, the threat of using nukes needs to be credible in order to work as a deterrence.
Gare··on Art of Roads in Games
> And they are also… a math nightmare. Differential geometry. Integrals. Oh my… Which is probably why most games don’t even dare.

Wonder if cubic parabola (used by some railways, and visually near indistinguishable from clothoid) has easier maths.

Gare··on Spanish track was fractured before high-speed train disaster, report finds
This collision happened precisely because of unfortunate circumstance that break in the rail and derailment happened just before the switch leading to the opposite track. Without the "help" of the switch, carriages of the first train likely wouldn't have invaded the second track.
Gare··on The differences between an IndyCar and a F1 car
Well, they could add speakers that make vroom-vroom noises.
Gare··on NTSB Preliminary Report – UPS Boeing MD-11F Crash [pdf]
The Falcons have all three engines tail mounted, so not the same "type" of trijet as MD-11.
Gare··on Flipper Zero dark web firmware bypasses rolling code security
AFAIK it should be a different system because the car asks the key first (same system as Keyless GO).
Gare··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
Well, AI is plain wrong. Fuel cutoff switches on Airbus are in the same position as in Boeing planes, below the throttle.
Gare··on Bulgaria to join euro area on 1 January 2026
Technically, 2 EU countries: Greece and Cyprus.
Gare··on Volvo delivers 5,000th electric semi
True, but that EU regulation is based on the ground truth of much less spacious roads and cities.
Gare··on Riding high in Germany on the world's oldest suspended railway
You might consider it an eyesore, but the river is hardly ruined by it.
Gare··on Whenever – typed and DST-safe datetimes for Python
I fully agree with that. Just a bit disappointed that Python is not even considering to fix/replace it's problematic datetime library (as far as I know). Excellent third-party library is good, but an excellent standard library is even better!
Gare··on Whenever – typed and DST-safe datetimes for Python
Fortunately, JS is getting Temporal, which will be great. No such thing on the horizon for Python yet.
Gare··on Nebula Sans
Not only that, some fonts have a vast number of tweaks available: https://rsms.me/inter/#features
Gare··on Plane crashes, overturns during landing at Toronto airport
Railway crossings are not especially deadly if you're a train passenger. Most deaths are from train-on-train collisions or overspeed derailments.
Gare··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
All newly sold vehicles in EU need to have either reversing camera or sensors starting from July 7, 2024
Gare··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
Indeed, thanks for the correction
Gare··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
EU requires them too
Gare··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
If you think of watt-hour as "joule times 3600" then it makes sense
Gare··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
kWh/h is a proper unit for average energy consumption over time, if a bit weird.
Gare··on Cities can cost effectively start their own utilities
> These are very important factors to keep in mind, even if the absolute numbers seem small. Expensive electricity makes everything else more expensive as well. It touches every facet of our lives in a way not even food does.

It has to be noted that in most EU countries electricity for business is quite cheaper than for households.

Gare··on The origins of 60-Hz as a power frequency
Which has been corrected since.
Gare··on Asteroid Impact on Earth 2032 with Probability 1% and 8Mt Energy
I'd assume quakes transform much more energy into tsunami waves than meteorite hit does.
Gare··on 'Once-in-a-century' discovery reveals luxury of Pompeii
Sounds like a "shortage of (quality) labor" problem. Industrial products are great, but craftsmanship is lacking because almost nobody can afford it.
Gare··on Where can you go in Europe by train in 8h?
> I was hoping for a list of shortest travel times between stations in Europe, as more of a thought/data experiment. Or put another way; which two train stations in Europe have the least distance between them?

You mean most distance you can travel in X hours?

Gare··on A pilot crashed a full passenger jet into the bay, didn't lose his job (2021)
> I'm often surprised how well it still goes with the complexity of modern aircraft.

Most of that "complexity" are systems that help the pilots, reduce workload and possibility of error. It's really hard to crash a modern airliner.

Gare··on An Aperiodic Monotile (2023)
> It also complicates the practical application of the hat in some decorative contexts, where extra work would be needed to manufacture both a shape and its reflection

And people say that mathematical research has no practical applications
