I will give you one better - encrypt the variables and move the secrets to a different server running hashicorp. Then load the secrets and keep them only in RAM.
Geof25··on Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites
So people will be running reverse engineering through openrouter and similar or local inference while Anthropic is severely crippling cyber security usefulness of their products. Feels like own goal.

Foldables to me look like a fad. People are using them now because it looks cool, but I have seen people to return back to normal phones due to unreliability of foldables.
Geof25··on Decompiling Fast Food Tycoon 2: Drawing the World
I have noticed that too. Even here on hacker news people are bragging to burn through 100usd of tokens per hour while I know about friend who has forced Claude Code to write complete MCU emulator with peripherals including HSM just from leaked firmware and reference manual for less than 50Eur whole project.
Geof25··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
I agree with reliability of software getting so much better. I still remember Windows Millennium (Something between 98 but not Windows 2000) and it has been a mess.

Further more I still remember software developers in the 2000s who just refused to do any kind of testing on produced software, because it is just a waste of time. It compiles? It ships!

Not many people are such cowboys today.

Geof25··on Root shell on Samsung TV
Claude Code for coding and DeepSeek + opencode for reverse engineering at this point.

DeepSeek will break the binary into code and Claude will search for problems. Now you have most of exploitation chain.

Geof25··on Revolut down – Global ATM withdrawals and bank transfers failing
I confirm, first down for me after 4 years of usage. Got little scared at first that I had my account blocked...
Geof25··on There's never been a better time to go into math (by: 3blue1brown) [video]
I am in a similar bucket like you. I like reverse engineering but the tedious and boring stuff between an idea and implementation made me drop so many projects.

Like I see a hole in a firmware and I want to dump the firmware, but then I start hitting the bland stuff like what is the ABI for this hole, how should you compose payload without watchdog kicking me out. Oh this datasheet is garbage. This reference manual makes no sense. Ok that's because it is for a same processor, different lockstep. Why am I fighting with stack on this processor? When you should use star and ampersand for manipulation of pointers in C? Oh writing a linker script a little frustrating horror. No ld we don't have RO data, only code, stop inserting it. Now let's strip it and I have payload.

This would take me days to get through while with AI I can make dozens of iterations in matter of one day.

Geof25··on 16-bit fully functional DIY magnetic core memory
You can buy FRAM (Ferroelectric RAM) which are effectively the same thing just in smaller package. But I have seen them only about few kB. However the amount of R/W operations is effectively unlimited,
Geof25··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
Surely such people does not have 100usd/hour budget?
Geof25··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
By not using existing tools and one shooting everything through the API - I.e. instead of decompile via Ghidra they will try to get source via capstone genersted assembly.

It is like putting a jet engine on a shipping container and wondering why it needs to be constantly kept in afterburner to at least scrape on the road while smarter users put wheels on the shipping container.

Geof25··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
And yet there is much more successful sabotages than prevented ones. It turns out that one can't see into a mind of other person.
Geof25··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
99% of saboteurs won't do string of such stupid mistakes. So it is a vanishing chance bordering on luck that intelligence will prevent anything and it will be possible to apply conspiracy charges.
Geof25··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
How else would you like to discover a conspiracy if the saboteur is a tourist coming from abroad? Or of a saboteur is a child who got promised 1000eur for it?
Geof25··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
Arresting all the people who happen to walk past a strategic object will fill up your prisons very quickly.
Geof25··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
It is not absurd at all. You can't arrest somebody for a sabotage without letting him to execute the deed. Because if he won't execute there's nothing to arrest him for...

So to prevent a sabotage is to have several layers of security (i.e multiple fences) so you will force the saboteur to commit minor crimes like trespassing first and also slow the saboteur significantly so you can arrest him for these minor crimes.

So you think that Ukraine is able to pull out such operation on foreign soil in matter of hours?
Geof25··on GLM-Legal
As somebody who is forced to deal with lazy attorneys, I am thrilled that LLMs are starting to push in this space.

First it is going to suck, like it did with coding but after a while it is going to be good enough for 90% of legal work. And finally when attorneys will feel the competition of AI doing their work for 10 cents of tokebs, they are going to be less arrogant and more motivated to finish a task instead of client babysitting them through the process.

Geof25··on Yandex bot traffic down 99% after data center attack
Lack of Sun is evidence for that there is no Sun?
Geof25··on Yandex bot traffic down 99% after data center attack
Ukrainian drones can't use Starlink in Russia because Musk is not allowing that. So that's false.
Geof25··on Yandex bot traffic down 99% after data center attack
Either Ukraine was aiming exactly for that or it is just a coincidence and Ukraine is going to exploit it further because reducing Russian bot activity will reduce visibility for parties which are openly hostile to Ukraine (like AfD) which reduces their ability to get into power.
Geof25··on REA Reverse – Engineer Anything

Geof25··on Tell HN: I've been paying for a rural Tanzanian's education for 10 years
I highly recommend not to. The potential for whole operation being a scam because you have no way to verify anything is pretty high. Now add there reality of generative AI and very easy way to make deep fakes and essentially every charity is certified scam.

You may see it as cynical or unfair but that's unfortunate reality of time we currently live in.

Geof25··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history

Geof25··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
If that would be true, everyone would be still using DDR3 and waiting on DDR4 production to finally spin up.
Geof25··on If math is more than proof, we need to better celebrate the rest of it
People often hate math because it was not explained to them correctly, usually by people who are good mathematicians but know close to nothing about teaching.

It was so infuriating to see everyone in the class absolutely fail on a specific subject and the "teacher" assumed that everyone must be stupid then. No self reflection, no questioning himself why he is not getting gaussian distribution in marks, just straight Fs.

Geof25··on Bad code is kudzu
This description feels like you are describing mold. It is invisible. It smells bad. And can slowly erode everything it grows on. One day you will take a shovel with molded handle and it will just detach.
