Haemm0r··on Hardware Attestation as Monopoly Enabler
It is not only about Google. Its also about the App developers. Nothing prevents them to use the non-google attestation, however they decide not to use it (for many reasons). First time you actually notice this is when you installed GrapheneOS (attestation OK and bootloader locker) and some apps complain about a modified/rooted/... device. Another thing is, that you are warned by your Google device while booting that something is "not OK".
Haemm0r··on Poland is now among the 20 largest economies. How it happened
Flixbus are a primary target for those inspections...
Haemm0r··on 3.4M Solar Panels
Wrong, payoff time will be shorter. Why: During the next few years energy suppliers will "force" people, who feed energy to the grid into flexible pricing, so the reward for producing will be less and less ( current flexible prices https://markt.apg.at/en/transparency/cross-border-exchange/d... ) and the incentive for having a battery is getting stronger. For my situation that means almost zero energy costs from March to October. Even in December and January it covers 30-50% of the total energy demand (heat pump).
Haemm0r··on 3.4M Solar Panels
The battery increases the upfront cost but also increases the roi very much (at least where I am living). You get way less money for feeding energy to the grid than you have to pay for withdrawing energy(as you said some utilities even limit/forbid feeding during peak hours). In my case that means (Austria): Sell 1 kWh - 0,04€ Buy 1 kWh - 0,25€
Haemm0r··on ThinkNext Design
I like the Thinkpads design. it's just timeless. However the bright red Lenovo logo flashing up while booting is very unaesthetic.
Haemm0r··on The Future of Flatpak
You don't need Flatpak at all to have these kind of usability issues, it is deeper than that: For example, if you mount a samba share in the Linux Mint Cinnamon file explorer it is just good to use it from there. Accessing files from the mounted share from "external" apps is a pita (shares are mounted to some obscure path(permission issues), the apps filepickers never have the information that a share was mounted, etc.). If you want usesful access to a samba share you have to mount it via terminal; This way at least the path to the share is short.
Haemm0r··on The Evolution of Tunnel Boring Machines (2023)
I see; you are competely right, I am not really familiar with the the technical terms and messed up with just literally translating "cut and cover".
Haemm0r··on The Evolution of Tunnel Boring Machines (2023)
Got a link for this? I am interested :-)
Haemm0r··on The Evolution of Tunnel Boring Machines (2023)
More information on cut and cover: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neue_%C3%96sterreichische_Tu...

(better translate from the german version, as it has more information and examples)

Haemm0r··on Love of cargo bikes is changing how we deliver goods in our cities
Maybe more important, however in my experience these things are neglected more often with ebikes than traditonal bikes, because the motor compensates the dirty chain or if the tyres could use some air... ;-)

Haemm0r··on Third Places and Neighborhood Entrepreneurship: Evidence from Starbucks Cafés
Fully agree.

Just watched a episode of Friends yesterday. The cafe there could be the definition of a third place. ;-)

Haemm0r··on A rapid response system for elderly safety monitoring
Anyone sane can't actually favor such a system at home using cameras to a system with existing technology(check other comments). These systems maybe make sense in environments where cameras are already installed but not at home...
Haemm0r··on Meta 3D Gen
Knobs in cars are not a thing anymore... No need for 3D for that ;-)
Haemm0r··on RegreSSHion: RCE in OpenSSH's server, on glibc-based Linux systems
Question regarding this from a non-guru: - Is it correct that this only works for user root if login with password/key for root is allowed? - Is it correct, that this only works if the attacker knows a login name valid for ssh?
Haemm0r··on Next gen 3D metal printing
Optics may help to reduce the amount of lasers.
Haemm0r··on Next gen 3D metal printing
Just an anecdote: Rocket engineering is the only domain where safety factors <1 are actually ok.

(for some parts)

Haemm0r··on Designed to Crash: the story of Antonov An-28 HA-LAJ and its demise
>The original design supposedly had two screws, but was manufactured with one.

I'm sure many here heard the saying(especially when doing FMEA): One screw/bolt is no screw/bolt. ;-)

Haemm0r··on Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant: Finished in 1978 but never used
Or the Shutdown festival.

Additionally Zwentendorf is/was used for training for crews of same-type reactors.

Haemm0r··on An open source initiative to share and compare heat pump performance data
A big factor for the total energy consumption besides the heatpump is the rest of the heating system. For our house the yearly energy consumption of the heatpump is around 1.4MWh/y (for floor heating, warm water and cooling of the bedrooms in summer;this number is reported by the heatpump control system) but the hole heating system including all the pumps and so on is 2,55MWh/y.
Haemm0r··on WinBtrfs – an open-source btrfs driver for Windows
True dat.. :-)

Just wanted to point out, that it is "normal" for people to avoid the thing that did not work out for them in the past.

Same could be said about cars: Why ever buy a [insert brand] again after you've been burned by its reliabity or other issues?

You probably just don't, as the alternatives are good and plenty.

Haemm0r··on Why are there suddenly so many car washes?
They watched Breaking Bad too much :-)
Haemm0r··on Can You Live Code a Church Organ? [video]
This is actually a real thing in modern pipe organs since years (the programming part or electronic playback part, not sure about the live programming ;-) ). Check out e.g.: https://www.rieger-orgelbau.com/en/leistungen/rieger-electro...
Haemm0r··on OpenWrt One/AP-24.XY: new open source router board by OpenWrt and Banana Pi
Wood is not either. The inside walls here are 100mm wood(CLT) with gypsum on both sides and the signal drop through 1 wall is big. 2 walls almost kill the signal. I don't have any wifi reception outside the house at all (65m² is floor area) using 1 UI Wifi 6 LR on each floor (with the U6Pro it was even worse).
Haemm0r··on Benchmarking 20 programming languages on N-queens and matrix multiplication
Fortran the king of matrices :-)

I really doubt that the FC firmware of an EV is less comolex than the software of an ice control unit.
Haemm0r··on Global CO2 Levels

Offsetting zero is an annoying practice.

Haemm0r··on Apple's Blue Ocean

Haemm0r··on Millions of smart meters will brick it when 2G and 3G turns off
Our local suppliers smart meters communicate over the grid (provided the next substation with a beacon is near enough).
