Hamuko··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
>This gets brought up every time the discussion happens, yet we manage perfectly well even further north here in Norway.

Yeah, try going to school in Lapland. If school starts at 09:00, you're walking to school in the dark. If school ends at 14:00, you're walking home in the dark.

>the greatest video game imaginable still only appeals to people who like video games.

I don't know. World of Warcraft definitely brought a lot of people that didn't like video games to PC gaming. And then you had something like FarmVille that brought even more people (many of whom probably didn't like video games before) into gaming.

Hamuko··on We Won't "Just Hang Out"
Isn't that exactly the kind of thing that would be offloaded to an AI? If you can just take a picture, record the sound, or vaguely describe a bird and it instantly gives you an answer.
Hamuko··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
This argument only works if you have a career (and lifespan) that spans 100+ years. I'd venture a guess that 0% of Grubhub delivery drivers were farmers a hundred years ago.
Hamuko··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Really glad I'm not currently shopping for a new computer.

It's also pretty fucking sad how this thing comes with less RAM than my low-end Mac Studio from 2022. I only upgraded from a 512 GB SSD to 1 TB, and I still have 32 GB. And even still, I paid 2599€ for it, where as the OLED MacBook Pro is 4049€.

Hamuko··on Archive.today links going forward
There's been quite a lot of people still defending the site. Basically "who cares about DDoS attacks and altering archived sites' content when it allows bypassing paywalls?"

>Most automation has led to people transitioning to higher wages.

Gonna need a citation for this.

Hamuko··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
According to the AI boosters, my career (and pretty much everyone else's) is already over anyway.
Hamuko··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
Why? Do managers have to manage a bunch of AI agents? Or are you equating an LLM to a living breathing human?
Hamuko··on Apple's git still trusts the compromised eMudhra certificates
Was thinking the same. My assumption would've been that this would have been a normal and routine enough of an operation to be able to push through without needing a separate RC process.
Hamuko··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
A bit less impressive considering that it's the M6 and not the M6 Pro.
Hamuko··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
A rational company would not buy out an employee that they're going to be rehiring.
Hamuko··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Wouldn't surprise me if they still have layoffs after this.
Hamuko··on OLED iPad Mini
Not sure about the iPad Mini, but I've really only seen the bigger iPads with a case. There's just so much screen to damage, and you do really want some kind of way to prop up the bigger iPads. I very rarely remove my iPad Pro from its keyboard case.
Hamuko··on Anthropic S-1
Google is at least diversified. They have ads, corporate email, video streaming, cloud compute, phone operating system (that powers most of the world's phones), self-driving cars and a whole bunch of shit. So if the AI winter comes, at least they can focus on other stuff too.
Hamuko··on Removing Next.js Got My Blog to 100 on Every Lighthouse Category
But what if you need to park an aircraft at some point in your future? Aren’t gonna feel silly for not anticipating that potential need?
Hamuko··on MEPs urge EU ministers to act and bring an end to seasonal clock changes
EU's "attempt" at getting rid of DST has been nothing short of a disaster. Just an absolute clown show, with different parts of EU just pointing fingers at each other. "You do it."
Hamuko··on PHP Foundation 'under-funded' with one full-time staff member, director says
Is Facebook still using it?

Also, not a company but Wikimedia Foundation definitely has some funds too.

The solution is obvious: pour trillions of dollars into Anthropic and OpenAI, and security will trickle down.
Hamuko··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
In my world, ignoring the law isn't "a permitting mishap". Or do you also call speeding "an accelerator mishap"?

Google didn't do the environmental impact assessment the law required. Google asked the regulators if they could get a case-by-case decision to not do it. Regulators shot down Google's idea, emphasising how a clearance as large as the one they planned would specifically require it. And Google continued to log for months after this.

They're still like nine weeks away from submitting their environmental impact assessment by their own statements. For a logging project they started in March.

You can't even put this on ignorance when they engage in correspondence with the regulators and get told specifically about it. And as Helsingin Sanomat put it: they could have found this information easily on Google.

Hamuko··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
So you have no proof, you have no expertise and you have no credibility because you've already posted tons of misinformation. Yeah, I'm filing this under B for "bullshit".
Hamuko··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
Happens constantly? On what authority do you speak of this? Especially when you had none of the facts of this case right either.

But yeah, sure. Show me how often the YVA is being ignored in Finnish industrial construction. Better yet if you have examples of companies asking the regulators for a case-by-case exemption, failing to get it, and continuing to log.

Hamuko··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
Again, do you work for Google? Because that's the only reason I can think of why you're so boldly saying these things that are just not true. Especially the part where you constantly try to pin this on a contractor.

This is not about a permit. It's about doing an environmental impact assessment. Google's Finnish subsidiary started logging the forest in March. Then right at the end of April, Tuike Finland (Google) asked the national regulators if they could get a case-by-case decision on the need for the environmental impact assessment, wanting to not have to do it for their permits. Then they got an answer on May 22nd, clearly saying that the environmental impact assessment is required. And Google continued logging until August.

This is Google themselves not following the law, asking for exemptions, not getting one, and then continuing to not follow the law.

But please, feel free to post your source if you have contradicting evidence. Here's mine: https://www.hs.fi/politiikka/art-2000012304991.html

Hamuko··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
It seems out of proportion that it's national news when a foreign megacorporation illegally logs woods in order to build a data centre?

They (Tuike Finland, the Google subsidiary, not a contractor) even asked the authorities if they could skip doing the assessment, were not exempted, and they still continued to log.

Hamuko··on Google illegally cut down 250K trees in Finland for data center
Do you work for Google or something?

This has been a major story in Finland. The head of Google's Finnish operations was hiding from the biggest newspaper in Finland (Helsingin Sanomat) for days. This is also not on a "Finnish contractor", since the fuck up was on Tuike Finland, which is Google's data center subsidiary in Finland.

Here's the list of articles that Helsingin Sanomat has written about Google's data center shenanigans:

Hamuko··on Sony Retires Its Last 4K Blu-ray Player in Japan, PS5 Is All That's Left
Sony has already announced the end of physical games for the PS5. If the PS6 will have an optical drive, it'll be an add-on and only for backwards compatibility purposes. Any kind of a PS6 optical drive will definitely not add significantly to its retail price though.
Hamuko··on Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest
The paperwork can't show a problem because they didn't make any paperwork. And they are required to make the paperwork and they know that they were required because they asked the authorities if they could just skip it and got rejected.
Hamuko··on Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest
It's important to note that when Google has said to have followed the law, it's been referring to following the forestry law. But the requirement to perform the environmental impact assessment is not part of the forestry law, but rather it's its own law.
