InkweaverReview··on Ideas Ubuntu should steal from Windows 7
I have to say that Ubuntu's forums and documentation aren't worth hardly anything. The forum is overloaded and there are so many new threads that very few of the threads will ever be touched or answered.

The documentation covers the basics, but it rarely helps if there is a problem.

I had a problem with graphics card issues last year and spent a couple weeks of research before finally finding a way to fix the problem myself. The forums and documentation didn't help.

And I found numerous other people asking the same question but not getting any answer. After I found the solution I posted it on their forum threads.

InkweaverReview··on The Calculus Trap
Very fascinating article. I fell into the Calculus trap myself, and I admit that it definitely would have been more interesting to have avoided it.

As it was I got an A in Calculus, breezed through the course as an early college course student.

How much better it would have been to have enjoyed the alternate possibility presented:

"Going from ‘top student in my algebra class’ to ‘average student in my city’s math club’ is a huge step forward in your educational prospects. The student in the math club is going to grow by great leaps, led and encouraged by other students."

InkweaverReview··on China and "our standard of living"
Awesome!

Fake Steve just gets better and better. ;)

InkweaverReview··on A Basic Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
Then you missed the best part about quantum computers. ;)

LOL

I agree that quantum mechanics, and applications like Schrodinger's Cat are strange and seemingly senseless, but I think that it is fascinating that it may be applied to computing.

InkweaverReview··on Creating an iPhone Application - Tutorial 2
This is a sequel to Experiment Garden's wildly popular beginner's iPhone application programming tutorial.

It explains how to create controls and link them to code methods within the iPhone view controller.

InkweaverReview··on MySpace now a “digital ghetto”
Thank you for sharing the original article. It is considerably better than the article that was submitted.

I believe that the URL of this news item should be switched to point to the original paper.

InkweaverReview··on Root vulnerability found in iPhone OS, exploitable via SMS
Let's hope they get the update out before someone writes a worm that blocks updates.
InkweaverReview··on Root vulnerability found in iPhone OS, exploitable via SMS
I'm sure AT&T would love that. Virus protection, now from AT&T, only $20 more per month to protect your iPhone.

I don't think I'd trust them to keep up with all the new threats.

InkweaverReview··on C++ - The Forgotten Trojan Horse
Yeah.

Great post, but the comment spam shows that this site isn't very well maintained. Clearly the author hasn't spent much time on it in a long time.

Too bad.

InkweaverReview··on Does anyone know of a good, free, screen video capture program for Mac OS X?
Thank you for the link!
InkweaverReview··on Blogger.com Refreshes Page Every Few Seconds on Old Browsers
Personally, I use the free hosting from Blogger because it is always fast and always reliable. I don't have to worry about overloading my server if my site experiences a sudden success on Digg, or Delicious, or another service. I also don't have to worry about paying for hosting. This allows me to stick to my no advertising policy.

All considered, I've been using Blogger for nearly two years and this is the first time I've experienced a real bug.

InkweaverReview··on Blogger.com Refreshes Page Every Few Seconds on Old Browsers
Well, fortunately the issue is now fixed on my Blogger.com blog at least.

Basically, you just have to remove the JavaScript that attempts to link the comment form to the Google Friends widget.

InkweaverReview··on Dev stays without pay to finish Mac Graphing Calculator as skunkworks project
Exactly.

I'm amazed by the effort that they went to, sneaking into the building to work on the code. I'm also tickled by the fact that other employees helped them, and knew about their situation despite the fact that the big shots in charge didn't.

InkweaverReview··on Build a LEGO Combination Safe
The article includes a great video of the mechanism in action, but the tutorial part could be a little more descriptive.

Too bad the author didn't write a step by step illustrated tutorial of how to build the safe.

It's still a fascinating piece of work though.

InkweaverReview··on The Hacker News Experiment
Good point.

On Hacker News you can submit your own articles simply because the community really does take the time to judge whether or not the article is any good.

I've received some really helpful feedback and suggestions from Hacker News members, and that is what I like most.

InkweaverReview··on The Hacker News Experiment
Very good point. You are the first one to figure it out. ;)
InkweaverReview··on The Hacker News Experiment
Good point.

I didn't even think about that. ;)

InkweaverReview··on News Blog about Recent Discoveries in Conway's Game of Life
I'm sure you will be surprised by some of the amazing new innovations. Some of them I can't imagine how they were developed.

I don't know anything about 3D life.

InkweaverReview··on News Blog about Recent Discoveries in Conway's Game of Life
This is a must see site for anyone interested in Conway's Game of Life or just interested in logic. If you have never seen Conway's Game of Life in action before, then I recommend that you download Golly:

http://golly.sourceforge.net/

It comes with sample mechanisms. There are some amazing Turing Machines, complex communication devices and other amazing constructions all made using the Game of Life.

Pentadecathlon does a great job listing all the latest discoveries and innovations in the Game of Life, and even has RLE downloads of complicated mechanisms.

InkweaverReview··on Creating an iPhone Application - Tutorial 1
Good point. Web apps are going to be unavailable wherever wireless access is limited.

I didn't even think about that.

InkweaverReview··on Creating an iPhone Application - Tutorial 1
The two reasons why you would want to use the Objective C iPhone SDK are:

access to advanced multi-touch gestures, the ability to store data on the iPhone.

If your app is simple, though, a web application running in Safari might be a feasible solution.

InkweaverReview··on Help Us Test Google’s Hearing
This sounds like a hilarious opportunity. Seems like Google has a little bit of work to do before their voice-mail transcription will be ready for practical use.
InkweaverReview··on US Patent 5255452 (or: Why Michael Jackson was a Hacker)
You have to admit that Michael Jackson was just plain weird. But then many of the greatest innovators were also considered weird in their time.

I don't think that anyone would want to emulate every aspect of his strange lifestyle, but he definitely came up with a few ideas that were worthy of a hacker. He found new ways to entertain people, and whatever strange personal identity crises he may have had he still hacked together an identity that most people are at least slightly familiar with.

To my way of thinking, that is relatively successful, even if he did end up dying young.

I think if there is anything worth emulating it would be persistence.

InkweaverReview··on The Clever Hans Effect
This is amazing. Definitely a must read.
InkweaverReview··on US Patent 5255452 (or: Why Michael Jackson was a Hacker)
Great share!

I didn't realize that Michael Jackson had actually patented his shoe design. I guess he really was a hacker.

InkweaverReview··on Development with the iPhone SDK - Initial Observations
These are initial observations from the first day of using the iPhone SDK. Basically, I'm just sharing my first thoughts and impressions on the tools involved and how they work and appear.

I'll share some insight later, after I explore the SDK and Objective C code interfaces in more detail.

InkweaverReview··on Development with the iPhone SDK - Initial Observations
I'm going to look through the Apple sample code and see if I can find an example that changes orientation properly.

So far none of the sample code apps that I have found rotate. Once I find one that does I'll be able to check the code and see how it is done.

InkweaverReview··on Development with the iPhone SDK - Initial Observations
Would I have to set up two views within Interface Builder, one for landscape and one for portrait, or do I use the one single view and rotate it using code?
InkweaverReview··on Development with the iPhone SDK - Initial Observations
You are correct.

Safari does indeed rotate, but other applications such as Photo Album, etc don't. And it doesn't work on other Apple sample code programs either. Safari and Contacts seem to be the only two apps that rotate.

Perhaps I just need to add the right code to my apps to make them rotate, but even the sample code applications from Apple don't rotate.

I'm still looking into this issue. There has to be something that I'm missing.

InkweaverReview··on Inside the World's Greatest Keyboard
Yeah, but most keyboards are in the $5 - $20 range. It's the expensive high-quality keyboards that are in the minority because most people don't see the value in buying such an high performance keyboard.

I'll have to check out those keyboards you mentioned.
