IsTom··on Hex Raises $100M
The way it's slightly off-center is unpleasant
IsTom··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
What were the reasons to assume it would be true? I mean if you assume that NP < EXPTIME (which seems very likely) then you end up with algorithms that run in exponential time, but can't simulate turing machines with polynomial overhead. Obviously you can't simulate TMs with just anything, but most of the time... computation finds a way?
IsTom··on The Exponential Time Hypothesis Is False [pdf]
There's a chain of classes P, NP(aka Sigma_1), Sigma_2, .., Sigma_n, ... PSPACE, EXPTIME. What we know for sure is that P < EXPTIME, others are unknown (well, maybe this paper adds something to this, time will tell).

It's conceivable that each of them is smaller than the next, but also that e.g. P < NP = all the sigmas < PSPACE < EXPTIME or many other possibilities. I think the general consensus is that it's more likely that there are more inequalities than not, but the fact is that we can't even show that P is less than PSPACE so far, which would be extraordinarily surprising if it were true.

IsTom··on Anthropic S-1
Not if they start making killbots.
IsTom··on Cerebras Deploys Trillion-Parameter AI Models
It's natively Q4.
IsTom··on Why is AI generated language so hard to understand?
They're picking among most likely tokens, which are ones with least entropy and so least information per token.
IsTom··on A practical guide to AI image generation, from diffusion to agents
> But if the user thinks it looks fine, then won't most players think the same?

I have a suspicion that when you're looking at (and generating, because you then look at the results) AI generated images and text more you get desensitized and are more likely to say that something looks okay when to other people it won't.

IsTom··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
> nearly everyone is on the investor/owner side

I think that "everyone" needs some kind of an asterisk. Who's "everyone" in this?

IsTom··on Revolut down as users report app not working
I don't know about other countries, but in Poland you must accept cash except for a few cases (over internet, large transactions, places without employees).
IsTom··on Europe EV sales rose 70.3% in September, 32.6% of market share
I think I've seen studies that they still aren't. ICE are really (thermally) inefficient.
IsTom··on AI Can Write the Code. Who Verifies It?
I wonder how robust these linters are. E.g. In C you might find some library function that allocates and abuse it to get dynamic memory.
IsTom··on Furifont, a Japanese font that shows furigana
It can depend on implied information, e.g. 方 can be hou or kata depending on if you're talking about about direction or a person. And that information can be before it, after it, on some image next to it, etc.
IsTom··on Tesla Roadster
> Will anyone ever be allowed to drive this on a public roadway?

I can see this being a thing in a cyberpunk dystopia, so.. in a few years I guess?

IsTom··on BB(10) > Graham's Number
If you want a function to compute BB(n) for any supplied n, then it isn't computable. But a specific number e.g. 123, BB(123) is just a number and for every integer i there is function const_i that computes i. You just will never know which f_i computes BB(123).
IsTom··on Gemini 4 Argon
At the place where it splits in two it also goes shifts forwards a bit
IsTom··on BB(10) > Graham's Number
Well, it's computable as in there is a function that computes BB(n) for a specific n, but you'll never know which function it is.
IsTom··on Research Firm Calls Anthropic's IPO 'Unprecedented Test of Investor Gullibity'
If you don't need ROI then with this kind of money I can make revenue grow even faster.
IsTom··on Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers
At first people played Starcraft for the campaign, internet access in late 90s wasn't common enough for a game to thrive on mostly online multiplayer. And it was popular back then. And playing on LAN was more of "20 mins no rush" thing.
IsTom··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
A lot of people who could get out of Russia after the war started, did get out.
IsTom··on How Protein Took over the World
And somehow all the people I've met mentioning figures from papers (be it 1g, 1.4g or whatever) always seem to skip the "lean" part of "lean body mass" part, which is again a decent difference.
IsTom··on REA Reverse – Engineer Anything
It could have access for code of an older version with how there has been leaks of sources of various commercial applications over the years.
IsTom··on Archaeologists Are Reconstructing the 'Invisible' Technologies of the Stone Age
These were a symbol of status and served a ritual purpose.
IsTom··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
Extrapolating the rate, there won't be any left by the end of next quarter. I jest, but reading these is arduous and finding holes in them is going to take time for anyone daring to.
IsTom··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
I'm no expert, but using multitape TM for this feels to me like a wrong level of abstraction. The whole thing has a lot of smell.
IsTom··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
I've tried reading one of these, it was an unreadable mess with some strong smells. It might have something to it, but it'd take a decent amount of labor to validate it, especially with how many references to other papers it had.
IsTom··on Navier–Stokes Lost in Translation
I'm not sure if calculus of constructions comes naturally to people who didn't have some experience with functional programming.
IsTom··on The Mathocalypse
Isn't this controversial, to say the least?
IsTom··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
I think SaaS will be fine. How the field works might change, but in the end marginal cost of software is still zero and when you've got a quality, well-tested and well-designed product it's going to be obviously better than things vibed together.
IsTom··on 3D-printing platform rapidly produces complex electric machines
To print a drone you must transport input materials anyway, which weight at least the same.
IsTom··on Penguin Mail – open-source Rust email client for Linux with AI
Sometimes it's easier to start with doing the right thing than to just try to fix problems later.
