Sad.
JerryH··on Where did software quality go?
I've seen quite a few examples from both sides of the coin, though when it's going bad there are some very common themes that keep coming up.

I don't think it will ever be achieved industry wide, that would be akin to all cars being BMWs. But for those people who want to build quality things, there are tried and tested ways of doing it.

Yay for us :)
JerryH··on Hiring Developers: You're Doing It Wrong
Couldn't agree more.

The focus that the short sighted interviewers and companies have on how fast your can solve some pointless algorithm that a CS has figured out 30 years ago, vs how you get on with the team I find mind boggling.

JerryH··on Technical job post tips for the desperate
Me too, I quite agree.

JerryH··on Companies looking to hire laid-off Yahoo employees in the SF Bay Area
There must be loads surely, lots of people are talking about the hiring frenzy!
JerryH··on Ask HN: Is this where I use a CMS?
No point rolling your own user management and session handling, let alone user groups and permissions.

I'd go frame work over CMS personally.

JerryH··on Top improvements for PHP developers
Indeed, most of the time I use codeigniter, though I was focusing on "where" you do the logic, opposed to just how.
JerryH··on Top improvements for PHP developers
One of the PHP devs who is also at Facebook suggested I do it that way, so I don't worry too much either!
JerryH··on Ask HN: Working on Startup projects at night and weekends
Personally I left and went for it 100%, then I'm 100% committed to getting it done, and don't have the fall back excuse or mentality of the "day job".
JerryH··on Reliably producing genius-level teams
Real teams are formed by the members themselves opposed to self obsessed game playing business masters who think they "manage" the best out of people.
JerryH··on Rock Star vs Rock Solid [programmers, and the difference]
Typically I've found that the best employees don't need "managing" in the classic sense, they need facilitation and protecting from the usual distractions.
JerryH··on Rock Star vs Rock Solid [programmers, and the difference]
As said in the post, when people call themselves rock stars there are problems.
JerryH··on Ask HN: Should I put my github profile on my Resume?
For sure, I did : www.metalcat.net

Even though I've just opened an account and there is nothing on there yet, though I link to all things that are me

JerryH··on The cost of a [programmers] chair
Sounds like something out of Office Space the movie.
JerryH··on The cost of a [programmers] chair
I think I might just give that a go.
JerryH··on The cost of a [programmers] chair
It would be a good market, one small org could deal with a lot of local companies, they could also have a side line in 2nd hand chairs & kit from failed status ups etc.
JerryH··on Apple drops Java and more: so what?
I'm thinking sticking with the linux desktop for Java dev and all things powerful, and a mac laptop ..... for, well, sitting in coffee shops drinking expensive coffee and looking cool
JerryH··on The cost of a [programmers] chair
If they break they must be unsafe as well, I dare say there is some kind of argument there for sure.
JerryH··on The cost of a [programmers] chair
Indeed, it's how you use what you have as well.
JerryH··on Ask HN: How do you find time to code/build your business in the evening?
Oh and it's in a proper environment, i.e. not an office.
JerryH··on Ask HN: How do you find time to code/build your business in the evening?
Body and mind, a good point to remember indeed.
JerryH··on Ask HN: How do you find time to code/build your business in the evening?
I do it when ever it feels right and I'm focused, when ever that might be. Some days that's 8 hours straight, other days I go sit on the beach and think.

Nothing happens at 6am for me, so saying "everyone should do X" is about as pointless as any other 1 rule for all or generalization.

JerryH··on Ask HN: What makes a job posting attractive?
Agreed, I actively avoid people who thing they are as it's synonymous with "arrogant twat" and getting things done is about team work, not prima donnas.
