JonM··on Show HN: I built an open-source web hosting platform for static sites
This service takes a cURL request and outputs an https URL: https://www.gostaticapp.com/

You can use it via cURL or github actions (https://github.com/marketplace/actions/gostatic-deploy), and there's a node-based CLI coming soon

e.g. curl https://www.gostaticapp.com/api/deploy/artifact \ -X POST \ -H "Accept: application/json" \ -H "Authorization: Bearer your-api-token" \ -F "file=@file.zip"

JonM··on Netlify Drop
This certainly wins on convenience and accessibility for non-developers.

I was working on a similar concept, but it still required some dev skills (use curl or github actions) - https://www.gostaticapp.com/

JonM··on Show HN: Dcron – Distributed, fault tolerant job scheduling system
Hey,

I've been tinkering with this concept recently, it's not quite ready for beta testing, but I'd be happy to take feedback on what I've got so far: http://croncloud.io/

JonM··on Making Sense of the New VAT Rules
It's also important to note that these new rules cover the sale of digital goods to CONSUMERS only, if you are (for example) a registered business in the UK and selling to a registered business in Germany, German VAT is not applied, and you do not have to pass it on (via VATMOSS) to the German government.
JonM··on Making Sense of the New VAT Rules
A couple of useful resources if you need to calculate VAT rates across Europe and Stripe's fees in each country: http://jsonvat.com/, https://stripefees.com/
JonM··on Ask HN: AWS S3 billed us over $1k. What cheaper alternatives do you recommend?
Perhaps consider an enterprise agreement with AWS? We've saved $large without needing to switch providers just by committing to a minimum monthly volume of data transfer.

Worth seeing the numbers before you invest in dev & operations.

JonM··on Your First Hire Should be a Sysadmin
On that point (needing a sys admin for say 10 hours a week), where should a currently devs only team be looking? Remote freelancer? Dev with ops / sys admin experience?
JonM··on Why HN was down
* Don't push new code to production while operational problem is ongoing (unless it addresses the operational problem) ^^ absolutely!
JonM··on IronMQ Push Queues - Reliable Message Delivery for the Cloud
Awesome, this was the missing piece of the puzzle for me, thanks for getting it out so quick.
JonM··on Ex-Facebookers launch MemSQL (YC W11) to make your database fly
Xeround looks really interesting (http://xeround.com/). Seems to do everything in RAM and takes care of any replication / backup & scailing for you. Looks like it would get expensive with large amounts of data though... anyone using this in production?
JonM··on Scaling a Lean Startup, The Story So Far.
Agree. If growth is (reasonably) predictable I think dedicated is a great way to go. Surely if you are aiming for an MVP, you don't want to be worrying about managing multiple boxes and adjusting the amount of RAM, CPU and diskspace they have access to. Better to slightly over provision with a cheap dedicated server then expand when you have a feel for the requirements of the project.
JonM··on UserVoice launches Inspector: Rapportive for Customer Service
Great idea and implementation.

I've just coded up a custom "gadget" for our internal admin panel. No more copying & pasting the email address on the ticket into our internal system.

JonM··on Accel, SV Angel Put $1.5M Into Online Bank Payments Platform GoCardless (YC S11)
Looks fantastic! I just wish you guys had launched 12 months ago; we've had a pretty tough time integrating with another partner due to their limited API. What is the timetable for international role out?
JonM··on Direct Debit API for 1%; max £2
We've recently launched an Direct Debit facility and faced these exact problems. Luckily our DD provider works with some huge companies and so is already insured against any "indemnity claims". This insurance is reflected in our transaction fees though.

JonM··on Don't use MongoDB
Where can I get info on the MySQL 5.5 issues? I'm considering upgrading from 5.1 to get the new InnoDB plugin...

JonM··on It's grim up north for UK startups, but things are changing
Count me in... How should we go about organising it? Email or setup some kind of group?
JonM··on It's grim up north for UK startups, but things are changing
Leeds (if that counts!)
JonM··on Advertising as a revenue stream
Suboptimal from what perspective? Server processing time & data transfer - maybe, user experience - not necessarily.

Ajax calls aren't by more optimal by definition, it depends on the context.

Agree that worse UX will frustrate users making them less likely to spend time on the site and have less interaction.

For the advertising that is sold on my site, the CPM is determined by the number and quality of Unique Visitors and volume is determined by Page Impressions.

So it's good to have a large number of page impressions, but actually I need to build my audience (UVs) which is more difficult (to a point).

JonM··on Advertising as a revenue stream
The "industry standard" will vary vastly with the vertical you operate in (sports, technology, barbie dolls) and quality of your site and audience
JonM··on Advertising as a revenue stream
Good point, I think there is a balance though....

For example, on a site with only one advert per page, I don't think there is any harm in having a new page load rather than an ajax call (which arguably would be the better "user experience").

What shouldn't be encouraged is sending users "around the houses" to get an extra couple of advertising impressions.... which if we were honest is likely to floor the CTR anyway.

The key in most instances is making sure your page loads fast, and let your users get to what they want quickly.

JonM··on The Biology of Sloppy Code
Agree. I'm surprised this article hasn't been more popular or at least prompted more dicussion.

The point about moving away from doing everything from scratch to outsourcing via APIs is interesting from a business perspective as well as programming.

There a number of startups appearing that are nothing more than a mashup of existing technologies that can be harnessed via API.

JonM··on What is a normal CPM?
I posted this a while back: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1136710

We were doing £0.20 ($0.31 US), more recently it's been closer to £0.30.

We did have a period over summer of £0.50+, but this was after a phone call from Google..... I think we jumped "on their radar" at this point and they had some campaigns specific campaigns.

We only run adsense on our backfill, after premium and Adjug.

JonM··on Climbing Out of a Slump
ditto.... I also do the "trick yourself into doing things" technique.

Good to hear that other people go through the exact same thought process.

I don't know how you manage working from home though... going to the office in a morning works wonders for me. I tend to regress over the weekend; I'm at my peak on Wednesday and Thursday.

JonM··on A/B Testing You'll Actually Use: Optimizely (YC W10) Launches Out of Beta
This looks brilliant, you just need to nail your pricing structure.. perhaps consider per test or limit the number of tests and variations? Either way, congratulations, some serious skills on show form your engineer(s)!
JonM··on Chargify News: New Pricing
Good point, I'm currently testing their system but can walk away. I'd be seriously pissed if I was locked in.
JonM··on TC Teardown: 13 Ways To Get To $10 Million In Revenues (Part I)
Nope. All approximations, but it doesn't sound crazy; considering that someone has inputted a search term and the link will be related to that term. Obviously there are loads of variables but it's probably of the right order (single percentages)....

I've inserted all my company data into the "Social Network" model to see why we aren't netting $10MM yet.

Our main discrepency is Pageviews per UV and sell through rate.

I've got plenty of ideas on how to improve the Pageviews per UV. Sell through rate and CPM are more of a challenge.
