LVDOVICVS··on Build your own private WireGuard VPN with PiVPN
My Canadian stepfather died. Family is not close and I’m in the US. The Canadian newspaper where his obit would be doesn’t allow connections from the US.

More than a “small amount of legit pain” was the result.

LVDOVICVS··on Jetnet Acquires ADS-B Exchange, a community-fed ADSB aggregator
I just heard about https://opensky-network.org/

"The OpenSky Network is a non-profit community-based receiver network which has been continuously collecting air traffic surveillance data since 2013. Unlike other networks, OpenSky keeps the complete unfiltered raw data and makes it accessible to academic and institutional researchers."

LVDOVICVS··on Mycroft – open source voice assistant
I use Mycroft with the home assistant vm running on Proxmox. I’m surprised how easily they integrate. And when the internet goes out I can locally control things from a laptop.
LVDOVICVS··on The Beloved Eagle 66 Squirt Oiler (2019) [video]
Love Mr. Pete
LVDOVICVS··on Amazon intentionally made it hard to cancel Prime subscription in secret project
I had the same issue with other software that, after making a valid attempt to cancel, I ended up shutting off the money from the credit card. That worked.
LVDOVICVS··on Adversarial Wordle
I tried zero guesses but entered “EEEEE”, hit “Give up” and it told me I got it right in one try and the word was “DECAL”!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

LVDOVICVS··on Show HN: Mum's 80th birthday present- a rotary phone from the 1970's
I have and sometimes use a 1935 Western Electric phone and it's associated "subscriber set" with my Google Voice account. The phone itself is completely unaltered, as is the subscriber set. Just a plug for a typical phone jack.

I once had a teenager say it was "complicated" to use; dial 9 for and outside line and the number.

LVDOVICVS··on An iframe from googlesyndication.com tries to access the camera and microphone
Just the other day I created a vm on my proxmox server of the Tails .iso. Makes it much easier to fire up rather than reboot something with a USB.
LVDOVICVS··on Tutanota is now free for open source projects
After I gave up running my own mail server I started used Tutanota for my small personal domain. They're cheap and reliable in my experience.
LVDOVICVS··on Toki Pona: A Language with a Hundred Words (2015)
There are twenty three keys on a steno machine. With only a hundred-word language the current machine would certainly work. But with so few words even the machine could be simplified.
LVDOVICVS··on Jetson One – Personal Electric Aerial Vehicle
This machine includes a fast-deploying ballistic chute.
LVDOVICVS··on Tabula – Extract tables from PDF files
Tabula works.

So does printing the document to a file and Perl.

LVDOVICVS··on Bruce Perens: On Non-Judicical Punishment of Individuals
A blind pilot isn’t capable of doing the job of piloting.
LVDOVICVS··on Budgie Is Worth a Try
Same. Firefox on iOS. However, no problem with Edge on iOS.
LVDOVICVS··on Transcribed police scanners in real-time
Thanks for the encouragement in continuing with my court reporting classes. It's still going to be a good career for the foreseeable future.
LVDOVICVS··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is making inroads with developers
It worries me that this appears to be Windows attempt to turn Linux into a component of Windows-essentially Windows swallowing Linux. Linux shouldn’t require Windows to operate.
LVDOVICVS··on Pi-Hole – A black hole for Internet advertisements
I run it at home and have use the dhcp server, too. All the numerous family PCs, Kindles, phone, etc, use it and it works great. For a family of four with two teen-age kids, it blocks about 20% of the DNS traffic we create.

Love it.
