MBCook··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
Because AI removed what little value it had.

AI isn’t magic and can’t always give you the right answer. And it can’t give you the why a lot of the time.

People’s actual experience is useful, and stack overflow was great for that. Until they ruined it.

If the site hadn’t been ruined, it still would’ve had value today. Traffic would’ve dropped, but not to near zero.

AI can’t always give you the right answer. But it tries. StackOverflow stopped trying to answer questions.

I think they had a problem with that last year, so I suspect they may be extra vigilant.

Being a software engineer is also probably part of it.

I spend all day on the computer. Unless I have some specific project I’m really interested in I’ve already had plenty of “computer time“ for the day and don’t feel that draw.

It still made sense before the smart phone, or when my phone it iPad couldn’t cover my needs well. These days that’s not a problem.

> They won't. There is zero business interest in making dedicated layouts for such a small portion of the population that won't be using your app anyways, unless you're hyper specialized. I'm sure Bloomberg can justify a foldable layout, the New York Times doesn't.

And yet, lots are already. And as people have pointed out, it’s pretty close to being an iPad mini. So if you’re already doing different size layouts, you’re pretty close.

For those who want to spend the money why not let them?

Hi. Big techie nerd here. This is me.

If I’m not doing programming or 3D modeling, I generally don’t use my laptop. It doesn’t seem worth the trouble of getting it. I can do the vast, vast majority of what I want on my phone, faster, because it’s already right there.

If I’m reading more or researching more, I pull out my iPad for the bigger screen.

But over the last decade, I’ve realized those two take care of the vast majority of my needs.

Consoles won’t go anywhere. They have advantages but more than anything so so SO SO many consumers want them and don’t want to mess with computers.

They’re gaming appliances and that will still be a huge draw.

PS: Sony gave up PC publishing, so that argument no longer holds. It was a dumb move as you said.

It’s their choice to continue to develop ever bigger super-tent-pole septuple-A games.

Look at all the amazing stuff in the indie space. Let your developers go wild and make neat games that don’t cost $200 billion each.

You could have so many test exclusives like the more fun and experimental stuff we had in the PS1/2 era.

You don’t have to give up the big games. Just don’t focus entirely on them.

Same problem movie studios have. They chase the “sure things” and just pump more money in to be “more sure”. It’s all more fragile than ever.

Plus developers get simplicity in having one (well two these days) configurations per console brand to deal with. Not 12 billion.

Valve isn’t trying to make a bunch of games with AND pay for/off all the studios they bought, all while trying to advertise and compete with Sony and Nintendo in hardware.

Steam just sits back and takes money, for the most part. The hardware/software/advertising spend is probably a drop in the bucket compared to MS.

So now that Tim Cook is gone will we see John Ternus actually apply some braincells to this?

They’re just going to keep losing. And every time they fight they make it worse. They had a chance to get off way easier years ago. They destroyed it by fighting tooth and nail.

I don’t want any of those features myself, I don’t think. Small chance at side-loading.

But everyone, even diehard Apple pundits, realized long ago this was a very stupid hill to die on.

What’s the point of running ACR on first party app content? It’s first party. You should already know that data.

Good for LG for actually honoring the opt out. Same with Sony/Google and a few others.

My TV isn’t on my network, but it’s nice to know some do behave. For now.

MBCook··on Reddit owners vs. YouTube reviewers: same 178 products, different verdicts
This is meaningless. People go online to complain about problems. Very few people are going to show up to say “it’s OK I guess”.

Without accounting for that you can’t draw any conclusions.

MBCook··on Android apps running native on macOS
Is this significantly useful to anyone?

It’s a neat accomplishment. And it was worth doing for that alone. Absolutely hacker worthy.

But as someone with an Apple Silicon Mac, I can run iOS apps on my computer if the developer has allowed it and I don’t. I’ve never come up with an actual need. It turns out it’s never really a problem for me.

The few things I use a lot on my phone already have desktop equivalents. The long tail stuff tends to be stuffed that I wouldn’t really use from my computer anyway. Like locking my car or using a banking app. One I don’t need, the other is already covered by the website.

So I’m wondering if anyone has found a strong use for this kind of tools.

Puppeting?

If they’re pushing eBay not to allow the sale of devices which allow transmitting on illegal bands, is that really puppeting?

Or is that just saying “stop helping people do illegal shit or we’re going to have to start investigating you”?

MBCook··on Postgres 19 delayed after AI reviewers find more bugs than humans can fix
I think the concern was the bugs in the new features specifically but still I suspect you’re right it’s just that AI finding them “early”.
MBCook··on Postgres 19 delayed after AI reviewers find more bugs than humans can fix
I remember an LWN article on this question a few weeks ago. The debate was going on and they weren’t sure if it was that there were more bugs or just that because of AI they suddenly knew about more bugs than usual.

Either way, unfortunate but a very understandable decision.

MBCook··on "We're not going to make rules that say you can't use tools for X"
I’m sympathetic to his argument that if it’s good code then it’s good code and if it isn’t actually useful or has flaws those are already reasons to reject it.

And since you can’t actually know for sure how much of a piece of code (or commit message) was written by AI you don’t really have a choice, do you? As time goes on and more people try to learn programming using AI a bunch of them may end up picking up some of its stylistic stuff. And if the submitter uses proper kernel formatting standards, will you be able to tell?

MBCook··on "We're not going to make rules that say you can't use tools for X"
Pinchart is not just some random person. He’s been in the kernel community for a long time working on stuff like V4L, I think.

He’s someone who should know the policy.

Linus agreed that the “assisted by“ tag that was invented for AI wasn’t working and it got removed. There was already discussion that lead to this.

So here he is, again (presumably), taking this patch series removing that tag to try to push the topic again. That kernel summit I mentioned was 6 days ago as I type. LWN reported this was talked about.

I’m sure Linus would ignore me (a nobody) posting. Or someone who has made a few patches over the years.

I think Pinchart is high enough in the rankings Linus felt this was needed, or maybe more likely couldn’t hold his frustration.

I can’t imagine how frustrated by and tired of this topic Linus must be.

MBCook··on "We're not going to make rules that say you can't use tools for X"
Thank you.
MBCook··on "We're not going to make rules that say you can't use tools for X"
He has made his position clear, repeatedly, for years now. He’s heard the arguments. He’s been in debates over them.

But people will not stop bringing it up over and over again. They just had the kernel summit where it was discussed again.

I imagine he’s REALLY REALLY tired of people continuing to try to start it up again.

Given Linus’ stance that it’s just a tool, which makes sense as a position, it’s really odd to ban only that one tool especially when you know your ban is completely useless to “make a statement”.
