MSFT_Edging··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
> over freeloaders and criminals

Statistically this is false. No amount of hand picked undocumented drunk drivers will change this. A large majority of undocumented immigrants follow the law closer, aside from the obvious immigration laws.

So yes, if it quacks like a fascist duck, it's a fascist duck.

Appreciate the response. The characterization is purposefully blunt. IMO we don't have the time or luxury to play around with debates over how people act towards agents of the state, when agents of the state ultimately answer to the constitution.

> If you live in North Korea or pre-unified East Germany, you know the difference. You don't protest, you don't express your opinion, even in private because who knows who the government spies are or who will snitch on you for slightly better living conditions in the system.

This level of control is unnecessary when the population is mentally captive and the chilling effect of police violence prevents any actual action.

I get the angle you're coming from, but I feel like it's missing the point.

The problem is we have a beehive full of ICE/HSI agents that are going around in plain clothes, yelling "trust me bro" in place of warrants/badges/names, and demanding full obedience to anyone they approach.

The same people will injure, sometimes gravely, and refuse medical treatment while holding them in terrible conditions. The party line is that anyone who is arrested by these people are "criminals", which is just a direct contradiction to the bill of rights.

At the end of the day, your comments are saying "I don't care about the bill of rights, all that matters is authority regardless of the legitimacy."

It took an insider with one of the highest clearances you can get to break the news about these kinds of wiretapping deals.

Apple, Google, and other insiders were very quiet about those back room deals. You can bet they never stopped and only expanded too.

MSFT_Edging··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
From what I've heard from people who've done deep dives, most solar installers in the US are essentially financing scams. The component costs have come way down, it's still essentially screwing things into the roof + a few hours from an electrician.

The real money is convincing marks to take the financing for 20+ years.

MSFT_Edging··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
I think the person you're replying to is trying to draw a parallel to the common "china cheats" narrative that centers copyright and "stealing" designs.

That's what AI companies are doing to cut costs dramatically, but since it's domestic, there's a sudden apathy towards the original claims.

Which(if any of this ever fucking mattered at all) would undermine the years long campaign of china-hate that at it's core, was large Capital holders being upset their outsourcing plan backfired once China was no longer a captive third-world backwater.

So here in the "west" we created our own machine to speed up the Chinese "Shanzai" and pretend like it's suddenly innovation instead of theft.

This whole situation is why one should never, ever trust the rich man's opinion on foreigners, as it's always always always just to line their pockets.

A lot of the dogpiling is from people who come out and say some dumb shit and demand respect. When they get ridicule for their ridiculous take, they play the victim.

That being said, there's also the tumblr->twitter->bluesky contingent who have always loved dogpiling and they're mostly there because the site doesn't have musk boosting nazi posters.

MSFT_Edging··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
I'd usually break them up into halves or thirds(pop open the capsule, poor some into some juice). A full 60 was a "oh shit final tomorrow plus a report due" dosage. You really feel super-human if your body isn't adjusted to it.

There's a lot of danger to it. My friend who'd give me them would regularly take two, at 120mg. He's extremely successful, has since stopped, but a doctor let him know he had some scarring on his heart from a minor heart attack.

Really amazing albeit dangerous drug. he took them since he was 8 or 9 and had no issue with stopping. It doesn't have remotely the same crash as straight adderall(dextroamphetamine). After over a year I still forget to take it. At my current dose it helps me through really rough ruts. When taking breaks, the withdrawal lasts about 1-2 days and then I'm back to "normal".

All this being said, I really wish these rise-n-grinders would cut this abuse out before it gets further restricted. It's been life changing for me in my normal therapeutic dose.

MSFT_Edging··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
totally. I dabbled in the hyper-productivity dose in college. 60mg would get me 12 hours of unstoppable ability to grind through homework.

The dosages are never mentioned though.

MSFT_Edging··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
I'm prescribed vyvanse and man I can only do >40hr weeks for maybe 2-3 weeks before I burn out hard. Not even talking about 70-80 hrs, more like 55-60.

At least for me, the fatigue snowballs hard. I don't take it on the weekends and saturday is hell for me unless I have something to distract me for many hours.

At my dosage, 6ish hours after taking it, my brain still fights tooth and nail doing the mind numbing administrative stuff.

There is nothing like the feeling of getting off the nitpicky design tasking to assemble some SMD components under a microscope first thing in the morning.

Especially if it's a known-working design assembling the second or third prototype. Feels like gardening.

MSFT_Edging··on It's still ok to enjoy programming
> but how many of those are needed?

It might be some weird nostalgia talking, but I really feel like we hit the optimal digitization somewhere in the 2000s(not to say it was perfect). Important things were digitized and automated, but with paper in hand still. Medical records, purchases, flights, etc. Things that really could use it.

But we all still spoke to each other, went places, and you had to be a big nerd to spend all your time on a screen.

I've been thinking a lot about the reduced rate of return automation has been seeing. Robots are cool and all, but most of what we're getting out of computers nowadays are SaaS business that beg the question "why and to what end?". It's all just grinding for a piece of fat in the grand fat-cutting optimization of life.

None of this is really improving anything, we're not spending money on society-level improvements, those typically just come as a side effect of some other advancement that has taken a core sample out of society for a bit of profit.

MSFT_Edging··on It's still ok to enjoy programming
Just yesterday I got a fully LLM reply from a coworker about an issue.

I've never been the biggest hobbyist programmer. My hobby programming was a means to an end for the actual hobby project I wanted to use. I'm more of a "maker" than any one kind of engineer. That being said, it was still fun at times and those personal projects literally got me jobs and allowed me to bypass live programming tests because I was able to show I knew how to program as I explained every design decision.

LLMs sorta fucked me over. My strongest skills aren't raw programming knowledge or fact regurgitation. Personal projects were how I showed potential employers my actual end-to-end problem solving. The projects were never polished, they didn't have every error condition formally handled in a logging framework. But they organized ideas into data and made things happen.

All that is worthless now unless employers want to see my pre-war steel collection on old repos. I'm defeated. Using agents for personal projects feels like playing a game with all the cheat codes turned on. It stops being a game, it's pointless. Me telling the machine to make something doesn't prove anything.

I still want to remain housed into my senior years and this tech has possibly kicked that out from under me.

MSFT_Edging··on Meta’s new commercial terms will allow the scraping of news sites: experts
Marketplace is a far worse replacement for Craigslist in the North American market.

It hides what you're searching for, ignores your distance filters, and fills your results with items that are essentially ebay cross-listings. The pictures are extremely compressed so you're unable to validate the item from pictures before reaching out.

The only benefit is many people already have a facebook account, but now I'm unable to delete my facebook account because marketplace is the predominant classified sales channel in most areas. It was a EEE style effort to collect more data on people.

The past few years there have been persistent spam campaigns against Craigslist in various areas of the for-sale classifieds. It wouldn't surprise me if meta was behind it.

Groups are in a similar vein. They've put a log-in barrier on various communities, lowering the barrier to entry tech-wise, but forcing people into their ecosystem when forums have existed for years.

These are bad services. They gain traction due to facebook's other malicious actions.

MSFT_Edging··on Meta’s new commercial terms will allow the scraping of news sites: experts
In a just world, meta wouldn't exist like this. I fail to see any benefit in a company like this. I can't think of a single useful product or advancement they've made besides creating the page that makes grandma go insane and young people everywhere to hate themselves.

They're pointedly worse than most other social media. Even twitter doesn't really pretend they're anything but a place to say slurs now that "comedy is legal".

Meta feels so much more nefarious due to how 99% of their business is quiet deals with data brokers and ad buyers, and they just smile and nod as if they make anything positive at all. It feels like a company that makes most of it's money selling heroin, but they have a cute storefront so they get a pass.

MSFT_Edging··on Steam Client is now faster than Epic's new vibe coded launcher
> Why bother defending them about this specific issue though?

Because it doesn't matter, it's a nonsensical complaint to wait 10 whole seconds for your game program to start, in the wake of literally all the other shit it offers. Even if they sped it up, it still doesn't matter.

Epic launcher starting faster doesn't matter because they don't do anything that would make me want to open the epic launcher.

MSFT_Edging··on Steam Client is now faster than Epic's new vibe coded launcher
I "defend" valve because they're seemingly the only company that cares about the end-user linux experience.

Rocket league used to have a Linux build, then epic decided to kill that off entirely.

I recently bought the steam frame. It's years past when I would have wanted this VR headset the most, but half the reason I bought it was to support Valve's R&D with Linux desktop support, arm JIT translation, etc.

People bitch and moan about "voting with your wallet", then you have a company that tons of people continually vote with their wallet for, then people complain about others defending the one company that doesn't seem to want to screw their userbase over.

Sure Steam has some blind spots for the very sweaty semi-pro gamer. I don't care about virtual stickers and little treats. I care that all my games run on my Linux desktop after years of devs not giving a shit and other companies being openly hostile.

Valves competitors suck. Their VR competitor is Meta which in a just world would not exist as an organization. Their gaming marketplace competitor is Epic, which produces the character-slop extraction shooter and a launcher that gets more annoying to use every time I open it.

The other "competitors" if you can even call them that, are microsoft who has basically deleted a dozen game studios in the last year via moneyball, and other game companies like EA and Ubisoft who routinely delete purchased games and tell the users to go suck it.

Valve is basically the only company out there who is resisting the constant urge to make everything shitty to increase investor profits. They stay private and everyone loves what they do with that power. I'm sure a ton of fail-son PE bros are dying for the chance to buy out valve and turn everything it's ever done to absolute dogshit. We'd be getting half-life 3, 4, 5, 6, mobile, etc and they'd all be shit.

Yeah, two small groups that weren't connected were all made an example of.

> Someone left-aligned

Total conjecture.

The weather underground accidentally killed more of their own than they did in their actual bombings. They went after property. Right wing terror goes after soft targets like kids and worshipers.

Does any of this actually address what I said that rightwing terror groups are going completely unbothered?

MSFT_Edging··on Amsterdam police confiscates server left-wing ISP A/I at American request
We still have White Nationalists in khakis and masks rolling up in rented trucks to harass people based on race and creed.

One group threatens property damage, the other people damage.

One of them is considered a terrorist org.
