Hi there.

Gen AI is for losers. You did not write or "vibe code", you purchased code from an AI vendor. They fooled you into paying them to turn your brain off. You're not being paid more to produce more. Don't be bullied into using it - so what if you are "left behind." That sounds nice actually.

MisterTea··on European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative
I know someone building a dual core RISC-V SoC that is along similar lines. He has a prototype working in an FPGA and planning to get actual silicon fabbed once he gets it to a satisfactory state. The idea is to be a simple no-frills SoC with enough hardware to run a desktop class OS, have a booting and hardware discovery standard, and well documented to make OS porting simple. He does a lot of low level systems work, network hardware, and security expert. I'll have to poke him at some point to see if he's still working on it.
MisterTea··on AI triggers PCB shortage for PC makers as order books full until 2030, costs 12x
Oh a typo. Mobile autocorrect fumble. "completed" is supposed to read computers.
MisterTea··on AI triggers PCB shortage for PC makers as order books full until 2030, costs 12x
Maybe the plan is to take away the ability for people to buy completed so they instead rent compute in the form of a prompt. After the people stop using their brains, they won't need computers anymore!
MisterTea··on Have I befriended a murderer?
Or was it the butler?

Truth is in these situations we don't know so no one outside of the case should speculate.

I feel the tendency to turn criminal cases into public spectacles does more harm and disservice to justice than anything else. The public has no business passing judgement or deciding for themselves. Leave them out of it.

MisterTea··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
> We're a clown industry.

Who's we?

The issue is simple: YOU work for clowns who prioritize financial success above all else, including quality of output. You usually don't have the ability to say "No" to a bad decision made by a senior person. Deadlines, managers dumping more work, feature creep, etc. Then, when you can't deliver they taunt you for their incompetence. So you eat shit all day long churning out crap. That or management hires the bottom of the barrel because its cheap and maybe one or two seniors who eat turd sandwiches all day, give up and ship shit. Enjoy workplace hell. Fire your incompetent boss.

As much as I think ACPI and uEFI are messy kludges that should be taken out back and shot twice, I'd take them any day over yet another vendor kernel with undocumented Linux drivers no one will give a damn about in few years. Even with AI you're still SOL if you can't get docs to write reliable drivers.

I've been wanting to build a cable robot for Halloween which flys a ghost around the front yard with a vision system that detects people passing by and the ghost floats towards them and follows them.
MisterTea··on European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative
No to a fixed tech stack. And no to this dual kernel nonsense. As someone who is exhausted with all the terrible ideas in industrial automation, I am not interested.

As for the hardware: please stop endorsing devicetree nonsense and demand discoverable hardware. Enough already with the random per-SoC kernel madness. Did Risc-v learn nothing? MAKE AN ACTUAL PLATFORM with standards for booting and hardware discoverability. Make hardware standard and stop rearranging the register furniture between versions and manufactures.

MisterTea··on Show HN: Warsaw in voxels – An interactive 3D map of the city centre
Super neat project but I am getting fractional (<1 FPS) frame rates in FF on Linux. Granted, this is an older AMD PC and certainly no power house but it used to run actual Minecraft just fine.
MisterTea··on Homebrew 68000 computer with a PCI bus
This is really neat and something I thought about myself.

An OS that would run on this is Inferno, though I am not sure of the state of the 68k compiler.

MisterTea··on Digital minimalism
I made new friends through an open source project. I attended BUG/LUG meetings and other tech events. There are plenty of alternative social events that you don't need a phone for. Email and even irc will do. I am a phone minimalist so its similar situation as I have no social media accounts.

> Technology is sadly increasingly homogenising around Unreal Engine 5

I kinda get the commodification of games engines and Unreal. I am sure a lot of us saw the gaming revolution unfold, watching gaming companies one-up each other in graphics and interactivity. But once you get to the point of UE5, Unity, or Godot there is little need or value to make a game engine from scratch anymore.

Don't get me wrong, if you want to write an engine, go for it. But if you just want to make a game then an existing engine is good enough.

There are a surprising number of Linux thing running webstuff likely hacked together and shipped. I find a lot of vending machine computers on eBay that boot Ubuntu or whatever and start some sort of webservice thing.

There are a lot of things that would work fine if done in a reasonable and safe way but we have plenty of examples of people making unreasonable and unsafe decisions.

MisterTea··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
> I’ve literally never ordered from any of these 3 companies. ...

>Don’t get it.

I get that it takes full advantage of human tendency to be lazy. A friends stepson works a crappy job seemingly to pay for his door dash. The kid saves almost no money and is always asking his mother for money here and there while living at home with no expenses outside of his door dash and video game purchases. He couldn't afford to buy a bicycle.

No they are not: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Customs_and_Bord...

So did I and we were taught to use "they" when the "sex" of the subject was unknown.
MisterTea··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
We have 5 star restaurants, fast food and street meat yet we still have kitchens. We can go to the super market to buy eggs, and produce yet I know people who have gardens to grow their own food and a scant few have chickens for eggs.

I don't actually use AI much at all simply because in my line of work the knowledge is industry specific and niche - an AI can't tell you how to fix a proprietary machine. I have used it a few times but to do dumb things like write some Excel script or some other piece of software I have no interest or need for learning.

Realistically, do you think whataboutisms are the proper way to address the question at hand?

Both suck. Lets find a way to fix both before spending an eternity on a stupid circular argument.
