NeutralWanted··on Google Cloud outage affects almost all banking and other operations in Europe
*If you're large and have a constant, stable usage pattern it makes no sense.

Even for large companies, if you have somewhat stable usage most of the year, but periodically have usage spikes, cloud providers still remain super beneficial.

That's the whole selling point of cloud. Spins up the resources when you need them. Spin them down when you don't. Cloud thrives off companies spinning up resources and never spinning them down, even when they don't need them anymore.

NeutralWanted··on If you don't run your own LLM proxy, how do you know whats going on?
I'd love to do something like this, or use API keys, but I still don't understand how people justify the cost of using API keys vs. subscription.

I tested it once, I'm in on the 20x claude max ($200/month) and I either max my weekly limit every week or come really close. But it only took 2-3 days to hit $200 spend with api keys.

NeutralWanted··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
I worked at HP in 2015 during it's split into Inc and HPE.

I then worked at FireEye during it's split.

Fun times.

NeutralWanted··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
My first tech job was at HP, in 2015, started there just in time work and live through that split. That was a smoother one from what I hear but it was not a fun job to have at the time
NeutralWanted··on 2004 RuneScape fit a multiplayer RPG into 56k dial-up
It is. Code snippets in the article are JavaScript as well, while only ever mentioning Java in the article
NeutralWanted··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
Speak for yourself, I voted for exactly these policies.
NeutralWanted··on Pixel Watch 5
I stopped wearing my pixel watch as soon as fitbit air came out and I could put my real watch on again
NeutralWanted··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
Businesses in America have an obligation to comply with law enforcement, and ultimately, follow the law themselves. I'm sorry if it hurts your feelings, but using an App that actively encourages people to interfere with investigations done by ANY law enforcement agency is not OK. What's next? You want a app that helps other criminals evade police after committing a crime? No shit an App like that is going to be taken down.
NeutralWanted··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
So do I. Now get YT without ads on everything that's not a PC
NeutralWanted··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
Reading comprehension? I don't see any ads with YT premium. That's the whole point. Plus you get YTM. Great that FF works for you (I also use FF), but I, nor my family sees any ads on any of our PCs, Phones, TVs etc. YT premium is stupid cheap for what it provides.
NeutralWanted··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
Unbound uses DoH as the upstream provider. So in theory all my DNS traffic leaving my home network is always via DoH
NeutralWanted··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
I'd rather have 100% of devices on my network have near 90% of all ads effectively ad blocked than deal with installing ad blockers on all possible clients. Sure, I use an ad blocker on my personal machine with firefox, but none of the phones besides mine does. None of the family that visits do. Barely any of my friends that come over do. None of the TVs and streaming devices and whatnot do. I am blocking more ads from ever reaching my network than the majority of people who only use browser based adblockers do.
NeutralWanted··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
Sure, but have YT Premium for the family. Don't know how anyone can use YT without it. And it blocks 90% of ads, the rest are tolerable / go mostly unnoticed.
NeutralWanted··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
Cant say I've ever heard any AI generated music on YTM before
NeutralWanted··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
Running Unbound on my gateway with a curated adblock list. Easy setup, network-wide ad blocking on every device / browser.

YouTube premium is one of the best subs you can buy if you watch a lot of YouTube. Plus you get Music.
NeutralWanted··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
Maybe another county should have developed, built out, and opened up the Internet themselves then?
NeutralWanted··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
I do, actually, why?
NeutralWanted··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
Not talking about graphene. I use graphene daily. I was responding to the dude butthurt about the ICE app being banned
NeutralWanted··on Political bias in AI: Where the AI models stand
What an opinionated take
NeutralWanted··on Political bias in AI: Where the AI models stand
Man I need to start using Grok more
NeutralWanted··on Build Adafruit projects right from Firefox
Workflow for what you described:

1. I go to your site 2. I download your service for my platform (that now has to be developed and shipped for N platforms your site wants to support 3. I install said service and make sure it's running 4. I go back to site and it's connected (or it's not and now you have to support a whole host of troubleshooting docs based on platform.

Web serial version that's now in Firefox and has been in chromium: 1. I go to your site. It works

What you described is something that has been done for awhile. Most recent thing I've used I can think of is Lenovos Driver install utility (you install their connector app, go to their support page, it connects to your app and then shows what drivers you need)

NeutralWanted··on Windows 9x Subsystem for Linux
Sort of. Technically speaking, just enabling hyper-v turns your base windows install into a VM. Wsl2 then just runs along side
NeutralWanted··on The Gemini app is now on Mac
I don't really see or feel a difference in a lot of the the cli tooling, however, for development work Gemini is just hands down better. And I pay for ultra, and while that's not cheap, I know I can just use it however long I want for whatever I want and I'll never go past the price I pay unlike some API key only models.
NeutralWanted··on The Gemini app is now on Mac
I've mentioned to my guild using mumble and irc (via The lounge) jokingly but secretly hoping they are as fed up as I am with discord.. it'll never happen sadly.
NeutralWanted··on The Gemini app is now on Mac
Been using it for work and personal daily since release. First few weeks were rough but it's probably the best AI code editor out right now. But that's largely due to the models just be superior
NeutralWanted··on The Gemini app is now on Mac
The best by far IMO. gemini-cli
NeutralWanted··on Anna's Archive loses $322M Spotify piracy case without a fight
No one 'deserves' to listen to music. It's not a right. It's a luxury that you can either afford or you can't. FM radio is still around for those people.
NeutralWanted··on Google closes deal to acquire Wiz
I was part of the mandiant acquisition, and half of us were laid off a year after we joined Google. Many of the remainding mandiant members were let go in random 'org changes' layoffs afterwards. Let's see if they treat Wiz any differently.
NeutralWanted··on Everything as code: How we manage our company in one monorepo
I work at Google, and yes. We use a monorepo for absolutely everything you can think of. But good luck getting that code off a corp device without being caught!
