Nikbul··on Why aren't black box flight recorders better?
It has that, but not showing who did it. Also if pilot needs to pull out a book or other manual, material, etc, FDR can't record that. Distractions of information given from attendants to the pilots is not given. Simple example: captain goes to restroom and second pilot passes out.. good luck figuring out why plane suddenly nose dived to the ground
Nikbul··on 1Password delisting forum posts critical of their new Electron based 1Password 8
I would think cloud storage of some kind is default in the current devices. I use dropbox as storage for DB file and it autosync with other PC and phones. Also you can get access to file in browser if needed. Google drive might be even better for it.
Nikbul··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
At this distance you would want a good repeater at about half point instead. Don't forget that data has to travel back and other side might not have such a strong signal
Nikbul··on SpaceX’s Starship launch plan gets an environmental OK from the feds
This will not be a reality in next 5 years at least. Honestly some of those requirements seem to be just an excuse for the feds to delay the testing as much as possible. Yeah, I'm looking at you, California.
Nikbul··on Plants grown in Apollo lunar regolith
It is worse for Earth plants due to long term exposure to solar radiation and direct meteorite impacts. Article states that Iron in the moon soil is Fe2, while on Earth it present as Fe3. Another major difference-is silicates and glass composition on the moon. Those are formed by micro meteorite impacts and very different from earth volcano samples.

So plants in moon soil had to adapt a lot more then expected. Also difference between actual moon soil and Earth's moon soil replacement for labs is clearly visible.

Nikbul··on I Am a Twenty Year Truck Driver, Part 2: How Truckers Are Paid
Are you talking about actually military MOS truck drivers, or the contractors? If actual MOS-it will depend where it located, but generally military work is 24\7 work without any side income. Spend week in the field with no shower? Work a year in a war zone? Driver fuel if the middle of nowhere and freeze your ass while waiting for special tow truck because no adequate heating in the cab? If you like those-you welcome to join.
Nikbul··on Silicon fluorescence from microcracks in cement, revealing signs of damage
In paper they actually propose general light, possibly construction ones, and an near IR camera with NBP filter for 1140nm. Seems reasonable to me.
Nikbul··on Norton is installing a Cryptocurrency miner called Norton Crypto (NCrypt.exe)
Huh, Norton is still alive and selling? Wow, I was done with it in early WinXP times after I had to format drive because uninstalling Norton Security permanently crashed OS. To below the bottom we go!
Nikbul··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
Hi, current Vet with disability here, I would like to work with you on this project if possible. Medically retired from US Army as well (blue card).

My domain is cybersecurity and IT management, actually in last year of BS for cybersecurity and IT management. Worked as PM for a different software company for payment processing, had to quit due to real life. I would like to help myself along with other vets with VA system, hell, maybe improve VA as well.

Nikbul··on Tokamak Energy makes breakthrough in efficient powering of nuclear fusion
Let's play further down. Let's say Y+Z = 2X, and Y=Z. So now Y/2+Z=1.5X Makes a break even or even net positive point a lot closer
Nikbul··on Expert help needed to decode rare piece of space history: Lunokhod data tapes
If you look closely, 1 in 1971 is a lot closer than 7 that written in 109. Also as mentioned below, defining stroke in the middle with 7, and how it is written. For number 1, writing starts with upper left and goes down, that makes sense for translation from 1 to 0. For 7 you do same but middle stroke takes your hand off paper so there is no direct and smooth translation to next number. That's my reasoning for interpreting it as 109, rather than 709.
Nikbul··on Expert help needed to decode rare piece of space history: Lunokhod data tapes
What's more impressive that this is 1970, so remote driving capabilities on that kind of distance is mindblowing. I was in NASA KSP tours, man, this tech from 1960 and 1970 looks weird and not functional today.
Nikbul··on Expert help needed to decode rare piece of space history: Lunokhod data tapes
Why is it Lunokhod? It should be Lunohod (MoonWalker). Russian writing Луноход. I hope author of the blog answers my email.
Nikbul··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
If you follow down the original on ProPublica and find comments there, you will see that there was no such provision. And the one that actually referencing IRS is says that IRS should continue to cooperate with private sector to make free tax filing and must maintain free portal. I would like to see actual provision to which this website referencing, otherwise it is click bait.
Nikbul··on $100 Billion USD oops
I wonder more why employees who sold shares were prosecuted. It just screwed up world.
Nikbul··on Show HN: Anonymous interview evals of strong software/ML engineering candidates
I have some questions: How does measurement of leadership happening in those interviews? How is measurement of explaining hard terminology and principles in easier terms is measured? How is a reliability as the team member measured?

For the first-you can't asses leadership ability just out of the blue since each company has different set of values and approaches there. (For example Army vs Google leadership styles)

For the second-you need some 3rd person who has relatively low understanding of the field you testing person for, then you need to ask candidate to explain something to that person and then ask the 3rd person to tell you what did they learn or understood from this conversation. So far I see no other way about it, if you have better ideas, please share.

And third, well only time can show such attribute as reliability as a team players. There is way too many thing could go wrong in chemistry between team and the candidate.

Nikbul··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Generally it is oil industry and gas analysis. Like flame detectors or CO2, methane, N2 detectors. All of our devices used there. Some devices include FTIR scanning machines.

https://simtronics.eu/flame-detectors/multiflame-dm-tv6-t#ap... 3 colored circles in the center is our detectors with filter configurations, 3 of them :)

Nikbul··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Wow, for a real change: Profession: Materials Processing Technician. (pyroelectric and optics)

working for LCPG (Laser Components Pyro Group) <15 employees in our facility.

07:00 Alarm goes off, set it off for 30 min

07:30 Oh shit, I'm will be late!

08:00 Leave for work

08:30 Check in to work

08:30-09:00 Find out what's going on and what needed to be done.

Ok, no set schedule of the day, but general duties are:

-High vacuum deposition of NiCr and/or Gold on LTO (.025mm thick) or DLATGS

-Cutting Si filters, LTO, DLATGS, Germanium, whatever comes up

-Welding some detectors that were made by assembly

-Making Gold Black coating on our high level detectors

-Screen printing LTO

-Lapping down and further processing of DLATGS (from 1.2mm to .025-.010 mm)

-Maybe bubble testing some RMA detectors

-Scanning Si filter on FTIR machine

-Working some experiments with Engineering guy

12:30-1:30 Clock out for lunch, usually home made alone

1:30-17:00 Continue work

17:00 Clock out

17:30-18:30 Coming home (depends if groceries needed)

Rest of the day spending time with my wife, PC gaming, learning Python.

Actually right now trying to get transferred to FSU for BS in Electrical engineering. After that see two options: Personal start-up research while in college or: Get in Nvidia, Intel, AMD companies. Very interested in processing of Germanium substrates and modern electronics building.
