NooneAtAll5··on Is Curiosity Good for Us?
explain?
NooneAtAll5··on A thousand fewer paths to root
> How did we get to the point where there are a thousand privilege escalation exploits in the kernel?

it's been rule of thumb basically forever that there is 1 bug per ~10KLOC for any project

linux kernel is millions of lines, so thousands of bugs being hidden there is about on point

(tho obviously far smaller serious escalation ones, obviously, but you're exaggerating as well)

why not start with trying to fix that?

NooneAtAll5··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3

NooneAtAll5··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
no, choosing light/dark mode should be manual
NooneAtAll5··on Efficient algorithms, the Exponential Time Hypothesis, and losing the plot

NooneAtAll5··on Efficient algorithms, the Exponential Time Hypothesis, and losing the plot
I'm frustrated with these "galactic algorithm frustration" posts

big constants are not new. We all had a laugh when matrix mul exponent went from [2.3728]639 to [2.3728]596

Even more than that - reading GMP manual and seeing all the "more efficient, but bigger constant" algorithms take over each other as the size grows causes *awe*

so this "sudden" discovery that theory is different from practice has been bloody obvious for everyone. I'm more inclined to say "if you want to went frustration at Ai - do that, stop showing your ignorance"

---

the main benefit for these results isn't to show what's possible - it's to show what's *not impossible*

---

also I just saw that this is the same author that wrote "Did I read this paper? Of course not. No one at OpenAI read this paper either, so why should I?"

so he expects same level of discussion he deserves himself - completely negligible

> In operation, a user can crack open the model and examine its internal state, and we also see that many people produce various modifications or fine-tunings of public models for their own goals.

you're describing open weights, not open source

I heard that couple decades ago there was a product for "socket internet" - you plugged it into normal wall socket, and it communicated through power wires
NooneAtAll5··on Digital minimalism
> and for human connection, there's still the old-fashioned solution: going out and talking to people in real life

lol, looks like someone haven't learned from the early internet of the 90s

people talk on internet *because* going out in real life is not a preferable option

NooneAtAll5··on Sylphide OS: a general-purpose OS for microcontroller-based computers
> you’re being a little overly critical for an early stage project

no, I'm exactly critical *because* it is early-stage

"early-stage OSes" are dime a dozen, just as ideas without code they are worth nothing.

NooneAtAll5··on Sylphide OS: a general-purpose OS for microcontroller-based computers
> On top of that, Sylphide OS adds:

> drivers for mouse, keyboard, display, storage and network

and couple lines later

> What you don't have yet, but definitely planned:

> storage (microsd, usb) > network (ethernet, wifi)

I'm not gonna be angry at false advertising, but OS attempts only become appropriate to discuss once you made drivers and actually ran stuff on physical hardware

Before that point it's just one of the many dozens and dozens other half-efforted attempts at OS that have been done over and over to death by now

NooneAtAll5··on DOJ says presidents should be able to sell secrets on eBay
I don't think being able to sell secrets on eBay is a bad thing. The point of secret classification isn't to restrict trusted people - but to restrict *unathorized* access. And highest person in chain of command naturally has full authority to do as he sees the situation fit

What I don't understand how it's allowed is that money earned from such ebay sell would go to private pocket instead of the government

I feel like that latter point isn't accentuated enough
