Obsnold··on Isambard Kingdom Brunel
Here’s one of my favourtie videos about Brunel.

Obsnold··on Huawei teardown shows chip breakthrough
Is the VC funding part important or just the lots of money part? I've got the impression that VCs aren't really interested in hardware so it's governments that have to step in and fund it.

I also believe the Chinese government is throwing crazy money at this sector at the moment, I heard they were giving money out to anyone with a PhD that mentioned RISC-V or semiconductors. This was a couple of years back so not sure if this is still the case.

I think it's this one:

Obsnold··on Cantonese Font with Pronunciation
That looks good! I’ll have to give it a try. I’ve been trying to make some resources to encourage my son to pick up more from my wife and have been using hambaanglangs graphical generator[1]. It’s good but can be a bit fiddly to use.

Obsnold··on Japanese have been producing wood for 700 years without cutting down trees
I’d love to see some more information about these fairs if you have a link.

My wife likes watching a lot of British YouTubers in Japan and it’s made me want to see more about how the Japanese view British culture.

Obsnold··on Japanese have been producing wood for 700 years without cutting down trees
Does the Japanese government pay for or in some way support articles like this? Do people in Japan get articles about how amazing coppicing is in the UK?

Articles like this about Japan make me feel a bit weird but I kind of wish we were better at fetishising our own produce and practices like we do with the Japanese.

If anyone likes the Thief games check out The Dark Mod.

Obsnold··on Pop _OS 22.04: New kid on the Ubuntu block starting to show real muscle
I got a new laptop recently and decided to give pop a go.

So far I am very happy. I think if you want something like Ubuntu but not Ubuntu then Pop is a good choice.

Obsnold··on Brain imaging before and after Covid-19 in UK Biobank
I think this depends a lot on the time scales you are looking at. COVID isn’t going to go anywhere once the pandemic is declared over. The chance of you getting it at some point is very high.
Obsnold··on GitHub, fuck your name change
I just tested this and don't get any message.

What version are you using?

Obsnold··on A Kid, a Minor Bike Accident and a $19,000 Medical Bill
That sounds like an awful experience and I’m sorry your wife had to go through that.

I just wanted to add that when my wife gave birth in the UK on the NHS last year she had an amazing experience and the level of support before during and after was incredible.

In general all my experiences with the nhs have been positive. In comparison the only other country I have experience with is Hong Kong where I had a dr laugh in my face when I enquired about a genetic condition I may have inherited.

The nhs is far from perfect and could use improvement. I think it’s just that most other countries are even worse.

Obsnold··on Flatpak: A security nightmare – two years later
Just to clarify yocto is not a distro but a project that allows you to create your own custom distro. Two yocto builds could be completely different from one another even using different package managers.
Obsnold··on Google's Sundar Pichai says future of office is employee 'on-sites'
I think a hybrid model would be my ideal setup. Something like flextime core hours but extended to days of the week.
Obsnold··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
Huh I guess I assumed that was only for businesses and not personal use. Thanks I'll take a look!
Obsnold··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
I would be happy to pay Google a monthly fee for all their services. Mainly just so I feel like a customer instead of a product and to give me the peace of mind that if something goes wrong I can talk to a person that can help me.

At the moment I'm looking out for whatever service provider will let me have the equivalent of email, drive, calendar, docs and sheets all in one place.

Does anyone know of any that might have slipped under my radar?

Edit: anything comming up that is I can't see anything on the list that does everything. My best bet at the moment is proton will come up with something.

Obsnold··on A Female Artist Who Shaped Manga History
Just to add to the list. My favorite manga was written by a woman (Full Metal Alchemist).

Obsnold··on Oatly: The New Coke?
The best use I found for it was making a kind of granola. I can't remember the exact recipie I used but a bunch come up when searching.
Obsnold··on Amazon soya and beef exports 'linked to deforestation'
I always feel like I have to point out that something like 80% of soya world wide goes to animal feed(I think the oil may be extracted first as well).
Obsnold··on Letting Robots Manipulate Cables
Huh this reminds me of the TacTip from the Bristol Robotics Lab. I'm guessing the sensor works in a pretty similar way.

Oh it seems there are some instructions on how to build one yourself: https://softroboticstoolkit.com/tactip

Obsnold··on Eight go mad in Arizona: how a lockdown experiment went horribly wrong
Wow this sounds incredible. Part of me would love to try something like this. The Wikipedia article has more information on their struggles and is a fascinating read.

Obsnold··on Hong Kong’s security law is going to devastate its economy
I think a lot of people underestimate how difficult it is to move manufacturing out of China. Manufacturing isn't all unskilled labour that can be moved to whatever the cheapest country is. There is a lot of expertise needed in modern manufacturing and these days China has most of the experts. I'm not saying it won't happen but it will be a more gradual shift over time than a sudden change.
Obsnold··on Microsoft Surface Go 2 review
I bought a Go for my wife for Christmas as I had heard good things about them. To us it seemed like a rubbish tablet combined with an awful laptop with the terrible windows 10 on it. In the end she has just gone back to using her 8 year old laptop with Ubuntu. Does any one have any suggestions for similar devices running Linux?
Obsnold··on Thanks to Bookshop, indies stand a chance against Amazon
I recently bought a book from waterstones online but only because amazon would have taken at least 3 weeks to get it to me. It was the same price as amazon but I did have to pay a couple of pounds for postage. Though another reason to not buy amazon is to avoid fakes. I have bought a book from amazon that was clearly fake.
Obsnold··on Ask HN: How to learn small electronics and HW interfacing?
I think arduino is a good place to start. If you want something slightly different I like the teensy which is arduino compatible and can plug into a breadboard. I'd pick up a basic electronics kit as well that includes a bread board and a bunch of components and then you can actually make some basic circuits with LEDs and sensors.

Obsnold··on A toilet paper run is like a bank run. The economic fixes are about the same
My wife suspects it started in Hong Kong. People started buying all the toilet paper so they could make masks from them. Then people in other countries saw on the news that toilet paper was running out in Hong Kong so they started panic buying as well.
Obsnold··on Coronavirus Forces World’s Largest Work-from-Home Experiment
I'm planning on moving back to HK this May so I hope this has all blown over by then. I just heard my boss managed to get back to HK a day before they stopped people leaving the village he was in. Now he has to work from home for 2 weeks before he's allowed back to the office.
Obsnold··on Coronavirus Forces World’s Largest Work-from-Home Experiment
I've heard from relatives that it is the same thing in Hong Kong. Last time I talked to them they said it has been quite difficult so far. I'm not sure if they have had any training to prepare for this at all or if they are just winging it.
Obsnold··on The 'Great Wave' has mystified art lovers for generations (2019)
If anyone is interested in Japanese wood block prints I really suggest checking out David Bulls channel on YouTube.

He did a whole series on his own copy of the Great Wave.
