PJones··on Why Windows 10 Sucks
uBlock blocks these for me (note these are domains, so it's probably blocking more than 1 script from some of these):

addthis.com, adnxs.com, bing.com, crwdcntrl.net, disqus.com, disqusads.com, doubleclick.net, exelator.com, flagcounter.com, google-analytics.com, google.com, googlesyndication.com, statcounter.com

Allowing them triggers blocking another 2.

addthisedge.com, adsnative.com

Something focusing more on privacy would probably also pick up the 2 separate translators on the page that your already mentioned, along with pippio.com whatever that is.

PJones··on Apple refunding all purchases of Peace
Weird. I'm in the UK, and just chose the 'I want to cancel the order' option.

The email confirming my request and the email confirming the refund had been accepted literally arrived in the same minute.

PJones··on The next version of Safari will let users block ads on iPhones and iPads
I have uBlock and Ghostery enabled in Safari, and this site didn't pick up either.

Mobile is exactly where you don't want to rely on this kind of fingerprinting. Especially on iOS, it's a platform with only one rendering engine and no plugins.

Here's what it managed to get from my iPhone 6[1]. This would be the same 'fingerprint' as virtually every iPhone 6 user in the UK.

PJones··on Why I’m breaking up with Google Chrome
"Buy a new computer so you can run our over engineered adverts properly."

At the very least adblockers will catch up.

PJones··on BioWare writer quits after death threats to family
As a story it was good, but as a game the backlash it received was fully justified.

It reused the same areas and assets to the extreme. You literally spent all your time running around the same 5 or 6 dungeon maps with different entrances and exits. The combat was repetitive and the constant waves of enemies appearing out of thin air removed any tactical positioning or clever conservation of abilities.

PJones··on Xbox 720 to use always-on DRM?
There were rumours the PS3 would use single use discs that locked themselves to a particular PS3 before it launched.

PJones··on USPS to Cut Saturday Mail
I'm sure advertisers would still pay the same rates for junk mail that nobody sees, and it wouldn't reduce the value of the junk mail to those advertisers.
PJones··on 3UK treats political satire as porn and blocks it
Be careful with that, I had them do the same thing to me (after I asked them not to) and the goodwill suddenly ended after a few months. Took hours to get it sorted and refunded, and to top it off they put the flaming restriction back on!

Edit: I just checked, and it looks like it was removed again at some point, possibly when I renewed the contract? Ah well.

Interestingly, O2 seem to compress CSS as well. Had a client with a problem on a mobile site I just could not reproduce. Turns out it only happened when connected to O2s data network.

It's the carrier that disables tethering based on the network profile. An unlocked iPhone can tether just fine out of the box, until you put a SIM card in that doesn't allow it.
PJones··on Bit.ly was down
In cases like that I'd use the short url that Google provides (http://goo.gl/maps/4y1Xg). If Google is down then you can't view the map anyway.

Sites providing their own short urls isn't much of a problem as far as I can see.

PJones··on There’s no money in 3D printing

I'm going to guess that the €700 figure is a reseller. It's £239 including 20% VAT in the UK, which works out to €300.

Of course it's not actually in stock, so carriers are charging £400 for it out of contract because they can.

PJones··on WTF Google, you stole my $5
The problem here is that it's not just a Chrome Developer account, it's a Google account. There may well be an automated process to lockout users that owe them money.

Steam has a similar flaw. If you file a chargeback on any game you purchase then you'll be locked out of every game you ever 'bought' until you resolve the issue.

PJones··on If you have a file called todo.txt on your computer, you're in the right place
Apps like 1Password sell an app, the online sync can be through whatever service you want, 1Password already got paid.

Evernote/LastPass/Xmarks make their money selling the service, why would they use DropBox instead and essentially put themselves out of business.

Also, didn't Dropbox just buy some music company? Expect music locker based antics soon.

PJones··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
Just tried deleting a photo, and it looks like they remove the image straight away in that case: http://distillery.s3.amazonaws.com/media/2010/10/08/92944289...

Hopefully it just takes a little time when deleting the account to go through and delete the individual photos, but I'll be deleting the individual photos before I delete my account to be safe.

That's mostly because they're harder to get rid of than Scottish currency. Only the major supermarkets seem to accept them.

PJones··on Ask HN: what would you pay a 50$/m subscription for?
This works even better if you know what the deals are ahead of time, either from searching online or by knowing someone that works there.
PJones··on Ask HN: what would you pay a 50$/m subscription for?
You can get this from most places now:

'Hi, I was just running through the troubleshooting steps with one of your colleagues and I got cut off. He said he was just going to put me on hold to [order new router|arrange engineer|whatever you think is needed after your own troubleshooting]'

This works for me 95% of the time.

PJones··on Going back to Dropbox from Google Drive
SkyDrive fails if you have certain characters in filenames. Characters that are perfectly valid on OS X. When I tried SkyDrive I got 50+ warnings that files hadn't been synced because of the filenames.

If I was Windows only then I'd probably use SkyDrive, apart from the filename issue it worked quite well, much better than Google Drive.

PJones··on Dear ICO, Sue Us
Isn't this vague enough that a site with an image is infringing?

"Sure, they requested the web site, but they never explicitly said they wanted the image, and now you've gone and stored it in their cache."

PJones··on Dear ICO, Sue Us
I like the idea, but won't this prevent you from accepting cookies if the site has actually bothered to ask permission before adding them?
PJones··on The fall of Angry Birds
A subscription game only works if you're WoW. Virtually every other big name MMO since that has ended up free to play.
PJones··on Windows 8's Achilles' heel: Metro applications
My understanding is that it's only Aero Glass that's being canned, that being the smoked glass effect transparency on everything. Presumably it's a battery life thing, since even bargain basement onboard GPUs can handle it performance wise these days.
PJones··on Using Git with Dropbox
Last time I formatted my drive as case sensitive I ran into issues with Adobe's CS5 apps and Steam.

There could be more, but I reformatted it again shortly afterwards.

PJones··on Microsoft kills Zune, Windows Live brands; Live ID renamed to Microsoft Account
I've got a MBP and a Lumia. The WP7 connector that's available on the Mac App Store allows you to sync your WP7 with iTunes/iPhoto, but doesn't include the Zune player itself, which is so much nicer than iTunes.
