PlasticTank··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
Let's say you're only allowed to write one more book for the rest of your life, what topic would you write about?
PlasticTank··on $477M FTX ‘hack’ was a Bahamian government asset seizure
when the seconds count the police are only minutes away
PlasticTank··on How Doctors die. It’s not like the rest of us (2016)
My heart really goes out to those of you who went through long battles. Today would have been father’s birthday, sadly he passed away last year aged 61. I often anguished over how quickly he left us, two weeks from the day I found out he was sick to the day he died, I now realise that although I was robbed of time, he and I were both saved a lot of pain.
PlasticTank··on Can progressives be convinced that genetics matters?
That seems like a strange line to draw, surely plenty of disabilities are genetic, implying bad genetics no?
PlasticTank··on Missing businesswoman urges ex-husband not to publish book critical of China
I would like to see it your way but all of this so-called decoupling from China seems very half-arsed and appears to me to be nothing more than a show for the electorate. None of it seems very concrete, for years we’ve read that country X is going to hold China accountable for Y but China just keeps on steamrolling forwards without much consequence.
PlasticTank··on The Framework Laptop is now shipping
Another +1 for AMD from me, only reason I haven't bought one yet was I was hoping to get an AMD chip for my next laptop.
PlasticTank··on YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation
>Because Asian countries were basing their advice on science

Actually for the most part this isn't true, our government was also telling us to wear masks but because of our previous experience with SARS everyone wore them anyway. Now of course it is illegal not to wear one.

PlasticTank··on Show HN: SplitSearch – Simultaneously search conservative and liberal news orgs
Maybe, just maybe you're the one of the opposite cliffs edge. But no, you'd never consider that.
PlasticTank··on Work on What Matters
Very true, it goes a long way to explaining the current state of news and politics.
PlasticTank··on Germany will violate international agreements with Unitary Patent, says FFII
Sure, it's not like the current lines of conflict haven't existed for hundreds of years or anything. This reductionist mentality is really starting wear thin.
PlasticTank··on We can't send email more than 500 miles (2002)
Love this story, funnily enough it was the first story I ever read on HN on my first day of work as a junior developer.
PlasticTank··on TikTok to pull out of Hong Kong
Judging by some of the posts on HN in recent China related threads it seems we may have the attention of the infamous 50 cent armies.
PlasticTank··on Colleges rescinding admissions offers as racist social media posts emerge
Let's just ban people who think differently from education, that will surely be a great boon to the country... It doesn't matter if they grow out of it or not, who are you to decide who gets education and who doesn't, I thought education was believed to a be universal right.
PlasticTank··on Hong Kong internet firms ‘will have to comply’ with police requests
A similar vein of thought but much much broader. It Allows for the collection of content data by local law enforcement as opposed to the NSL "By law, NSLs can request only non-content information, for example, transactional records and phone numbers dialed, but never the content of telephone calls or e-mails."[0]

PlasticTank··on Hong Kong internet firms ‘will have to comply’ with police requests
For anyone not sure of the difference between this and most countries where companies have to comply with police requests, the big difference is that HK police no longer requires a warrant. HK Police may now demand data from companies such as Facebook without a warrant, it should be interesting to see how these companies handle it.
PlasticTank··on Journalist’s phone hacked: all he had to do was visit any website
You don't need to compromise a site they visit regularly, there are plenty of other ways to get someone to visit a malicious page, phishing email or even a link on HackerNews for example. People will visit new sites for all kinds of reasons, you'd just need to understand your target.
PlasticTank··on GitHub is working on renaming default branch from “master”
They are hardly related. Will you be removing my master's degree next?
PlasticTank··on The effects on cognition of sleeping 4 hours per night for 12-14 days
I believe sleep to be one of the most underrated and underutilized health strategies, I know so many who diet and do all sorts but then are proud of the fact they only sleep 6 hours a night. Study after study shows how incredibly deterementail even a slight lack of sleep can be, so much so that I usually don't believe I've read them correctly to begin with.

I would suggest this book to anyone interested in the topic: Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams – Matthew Walker The author was on Joe Rogan at some point too but I haven't listened to it.

PlasticTank··on Senate narrowly rejects plan to require a warrant for Americans’ browsing data
For two things to be equal is surely an impossibility, they would be one.
PlasticTank··on Facebook uses 1.5B Reddit posts to create chatbot
How long until you have to shutdown because it starts getting offensive like Tay?
PlasticTank··on Jeff Bezos's phone 'hacked by Saudi crown prince'
It surprises me that they don't require both of you to have each others phone numbers in your contacts lists before giving away identifiable information.
PlasticTank··on Jeff Bezos's phone 'hacked by Saudi crown prince'
I don't know of any directly related to it's encryption but multiple protest organizers were identified and arrested by the Hong Kong Police Force through Telegram, I'm not 100% sure but I believe they just added lists of suspected phone numbers onto their phones and looked in Telegram see which one's matched to Group admins.
PlasticTank··on African grey parrots spontaneously 'lend a wing'
Another fascinating social bird although not a parrot and one of only a few social birds of prey is the Harris hawk, my father had one when I was a kid and it was the most intelligent animal outside of humans that I have ever interacted with.
PlasticTank··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions? (2010)
well after today's news I'm going with war
PlasticTank··on Amazon is about to host a homeless shelter in its Seattle headquarters
> Decreasing the value of nearby homes

People often overlook this point way too quickly, they don't consider people with mortgages, if you saved up for a house and purchased with a mortgage then when the flood gates are opened and your house value drops, you now owe more than your house is worth, not a good position to be in.

PlasticTank··on The StingRay Is Why the 4th Amendment Was Written (2017)
Where I live I see police SUVs driving around with these types of devices on their roofs, this is a couple of times per day occurrence. I was wondering strictly for research purposes what kind of attacks are these devices vulnerable to? Could one for example spoof enough phones/connections to cause some DoS like affect.
PlasticTank··on Nuclear fusion startup raises $100M to design and build a demo power plant
How do people think nuclear fusion will affect renewable energies when it comes to maturity? Does this technology make solar and wind some what redundant?
PlasticTank··on Learning at work is work, and we must make space for it
I run a small consultancy and Development Friday's are almost mandatory for my developers. Everyone is given Friday afternoon to learn new skills or improve existing ones, I even tell my clients that this happens (we charge by the week) and in the last 4 years I've only had one complaint and we quickly cancelled the contract with them after.
PlasticTank··on Singapore tells Facebook to correct post under new fake news law
> Is it worth it? None of the positives you described are exclusive to a totalitarian government.
PlasticTank··on Apple Bans App That Allowed Hong Kong Protestors to Track Police Movements
They're happy to stand up to the FBI but not the CCP?
