QuercusMax··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
Hadn't they been phasing out the catalog business in favor of brick-and-mortar stores?
QuercusMax··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
This is one thing that distinguishes Bluesky from other sites: they don't penalize you for linking outside the platform
QuercusMax··on My old job feels distant now
I've actually been noticing this with a bunch of staff+ engineers at my current workplace. Previously what could be done with a TL plus 2 or 3 juniors can be done by a single person. I'm seeing some really sophisticated internal tools being built to help internal users with issues that previously required oncall engineer time.
QuercusMax··on ICE Planning $100M 'Nightmare' Domestic Spy Program
Obviously we're not talking about getting rid of FAA or FEMA, but rather breaking up DHS back how it was before and getting rid of ICE. TSA doesn't do jack squat and is almost entirely security theater; it needs to go.
QuercusMax··on ICE Planning $100M 'Nightmare' Domestic Spy Program
5 year statute of limitations, unlimited if it results in death.

Unless he pardons literally every ICE agent, a new administration can and certainly should levy all kinds of charges. That's one reason folks have been documenting so much about what's going on even if it can't be stopped right now.

QuercusMax··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
In my case it's actually that there was no type annotation for the first N years of the project (long before I joined) and a couple people started using them in advisory mode but with no enforcement.

Just a huge mess. One reason I'm not a big fan of python for large projects.

QuercusMax··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
The amount of crazy stupid bugs in the 8-year-old codebase I work on is shocking. Every time I work on a new subsystem I end up fixing 20 incidental bugs; lots of N+1 query problems, completely wrong type annotations, all kinds of things.
QuercusMax··on Surely you have ultra-wideband radios on your bins too?
No, he's referring to using the human body, brain, and nose to figure out when to take the trash out to the street, with Home Assistant giving a reminder.
QuercusMax··on Pirating the Pirates
The saying was something like "Gene can make a good script out of mediocre one. He can also make a good script out of a great one."
QuercusMax··on How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs
Middle managers supervise managers. They're managers of managers. Too many people think "middle manager" means "line manager".
QuercusMax··on Revealing the details of how OpenAI agents hacked Hugging Face
Models don't have a sense of time, and wasting resources (token spend) is something that it's not clear they're optimized against
QuercusMax··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
The imprisonment and lack of freedom is the punishment. The prison itself doesn't need to be actively unpleasant - the whole point is you cannot leave.
QuercusMax··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
Loss of freedom is the punishment, not being cooked to death in prison.
QuercusMax··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
I've written at least hundreds of thousands of lines of Java code in my career, possibly over a million. I used to be extremely fast at building new features when I worked on a MLOC Java app I'd architected from the ground up. A huge percentage of the characters in that code were not typed by me, but were generated by my IDE.

Did I have an unfair advantage compared to the guys who were trying to get by using Notepad and the commandline?

QuercusMax··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
I don't understand why Texas voters support such inhumane conditions. All these "Christians" who support this kind of cruel punishment need to have a "come to Jesus" moment, literally.
QuercusMax··on North Korean nuclear test sets off years of earthquakes
Lol, also the only use of nuclear weapons in war was over 80 years ago, so I'm not sure what their point even is aside from being a moronic racist
QuercusMax··on North Korean nuclear test sets off years of earthquakes
But they did bomb their own people in the Tulsa Race Massacre
QuercusMax··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
Chained filter and map don't necessarily iterate multiple times. They certainly can but depending on how things are built they very often run as a single loop with the operations chained.
QuercusMax··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
Do they do double-tap strikes on schools and hospitals? Do they shoot children 355 times to make sure they're dead like with Hind Rajab?

Just trying to see how the compare to the US and Israeli militaries when it comes to war crimes.

QuercusMax··on Getting your hands dirty is good for you
I have read but not verified that washing with water is about as effective as with soap at removing bacteria from hands. Having soap on your hands forces you to get all the soap off, which requires touching more skin surface.
QuercusMax··on Nobody Has Actually Built a Software Factory
"On that footing the loop closes"
QuercusMax··on Study: Blue light impairs the eye's ability to distinguish fine detail most
I was curious what Marv from Home Alone had to say about lighting... guess it must be a different guy!
QuercusMax··on Bug Blindness
This is exactly how our letters came about - 'A' originally was written sideways and represented an ox head, but now everybody just knows it as a letter.
QuercusMax··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
I think (c) isn't right. Byte-identical sounds to me like it's almost certainly a copy.
QuercusMax··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
I read that book right at the beginning of my career over 20 years ago, when I was the new guy who had actually studied software engineering among all my entirely self-taught older colleagues. Lots of big messes to clean up in that codebase!
QuercusMax··on Small Models Have Arrived
Just being able to instantly generate a complicated query expression to pull specific bits out of a JSON blob sold me. It's awesome that I can ask Claude to build a whole feature and it will often one-shot it for me, but generating utility bash / python scripts or little throwaway utility webapps is what really excites me.
QuercusMax··on Show HN: The load-bearing vocabulary of Claude
I believe the term "seam" came from Michael Feathers' "Working Effectively with Legacy Code": “a seam is a place where you can alter behavior in your program without editing in that place”.

https://martinfowler.com/bliki/LegacySeam.html

Claude is using it a bit liberally, but not totally incorrectly.

QuercusMax··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
The color definitely made me want to shut my mouth
QuercusMax··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
The turd brown color certainly didn't help
QuercusMax··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
All those crazy complicated CLIs are now super useful for LLMs!
