Learning and desperately trying not to forget much of it ...

RandomInteger4··on In the rush to harvest body parts, death investigations have been upended
The silent component of the disgust behind what's happening in articles like this is the fear that medical professionals will see greater profit from letting you die than from saving your life.

I bet there are already cases like this, either in the US, or in the dystopia that is China.

Fuck, I mean, there's already people out there who drug people and harvest their kidneys in a bathtub of some dirty motel somewhere. If there are people doing this shit on the black market, then there's definitely sociopaths that would do this shit in the hospitals if they thought they could get away with it, which is just what the organ donor checkbox opens the door to.

RandomInteger4··on Car tires biggest likely source of microplastics in California coastal waters
A cheaper home next to a freeway is probably healthier than living on the street.
RandomInteger4··on Car tires biggest likely source of microplastics in California coastal waters
Maybe California should worry about having adequate affordable housing before worrying about where said housing is located.
RandomInteger4··on Some tea bags may shed billions of microplastics per cup
Any string dipped in tea is going to wick moisture and dribble on the side of the tea cup. This is due to a property of liquids known as capillary action.
RandomInteger4··on Uber CEO calls business 'sustainable' amid huge losses
How? Like, surely their servers don't cost $5B every 3 months, right? Where is this money going?
RandomInteger4··on Brain research on boys’ preference for video games and girls’ for social media
Where do you think those differences in social status competitions originate from if not from brain differences?
RandomInteger4··on End of an American tradition: Amtrak kills the traditional dining car
When's the last time you saw an advertisement to ride a train? Maybe trains are dying because they link up locations that are less convenient for people and nobody knows that trains still exist outside of metro lines?
RandomInteger4··on Travel without a phone
No.
RandomInteger4··on Sanders wants to replace credit reporting companies with public credit registry
So basically they're not trying to suppress minority voters?
RandomInteger4··on Sanders wants to replace credit reporting companies with public credit registry
It will transform into what the CCP is doing. There is nothing else that can come out of such a move.
RandomInteger4··on How the “Mail & Guardian” got taken down
The content ID system is just a system for "search by video" or "search by audio". It doesn't do anything "instead of". Just helps copyright owners find infringing content. What they do after that is up to them.
RandomInteger4··on How the “Mail & Guardian” got taken down
YouTube's content ID system is in place to facilitate DMCA takedowns. Folks such as Nintendo can go either the route of filing a claim to take the ad revenue of a video, or filing a copyright strike claim to have the video removed.

Whichever variation that is used is up to the copyright holder (legitimate or otherwise), and both are definitely used by legitimate actors for sometimes the most ridiculous of copyright claims (someone humming a song for instance).

RandomInteger4··on Google bans family cafe for offensive content for posting photo of British dish
You realize that ads can be targeted to locations, correct?
RandomInteger4··on The Epstein scandal at MIT shows the moral bankruptcy of techno elites
Seems absurd to ban bad people from giving their money to good causes. Bad people with money will still have money, whether you shun them or not.

If you take this to it's logical extreme, you only allow bad people to give money to bad causes; especially so because the folks making these determinations allow no room for neutral causes.

Computercraft or that newer one, openComputers, which has the memory blocks and such similar to redpower2.

RandomInteger4··on Anti-handcuffs Protective wear to slow down police speedcuffs
Shouldn't this post be flagged?
RandomInteger4··on Where Does Affirmative Action Leave Asian-Americans?
Either that or given the current state of higher education, it's used as a way to take advantage of those desperate to better their lives under the false pretense that any degree they receive will land them a job that will afford them to pay back student loan debt.
RandomInteger4··on Why are there protests in Hong Kong?
Puerto Rican call themselves Puerto Ricans because (1) they're not yet a state, and (2) the term defines both a region and an ethnicity.

There's little similarity between their relation to the U.S. and HK or Taiwan's relation to China, especially since the U.S. and its territories are all democracies.

RandomInteger4··on Toshiba Introduces New Tiny NVMe SSD Form Factor
I just built a new computer and didn't seem to have an issue that I can remember installing the M.2 NVMe storage. Now I'm slightly worried I might have missed something, lol.

Granted, I've had a set of tiny screw screw drivers for a while now, so maybe that's what you're referring to? These screw drivers aren't that specialized, are they? They're still just Phillips-head, right? Just smaller?

RandomInteger4··on Selfie-seeking Instagrammers are ruining the world’s beautiful places
No, that's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.

Do you think anyone is out there "seeking likes" for the sake of likes? If we hide likes and views, who would we be hiding them from? Third parties, or the person making the content? If the former, then the person making the content is still getting a dopamine rush. If the latter, then the audience will have a button that they're not sure if it does anything when they click it. If both, then someone will still find a way to track these things due to the outcome of the algorithm used to sort content to trending or not.

Oh, wait wait wait, no, let me guess, you want the idea of popular content to be thrown away completely and have the pseudo-communist overlords of silicon valley to select what is or is not trending manually?

Like, what possible solution do you think there is to this other than just leaving the system be as it is and being content with the fact that humans are humans?

RandomInteger4··on Epigrams in Programming (1982)
It teaches you the beauty of minimalism.
RandomInteger4··on Epigrams in Programming (1982)
Can you elaborate on what you mean by "allowed scripting that is for all intents impossible in Java"?
RandomInteger4··on Epigrams in Programming (1982)
Lua is nice.
RandomInteger4··on Chrome hides www and https:// in the address bar again
This is so pointless. Why? To make the URLs prettier for the average user who they assume is too stupid to function or something?

Meanwhile most URLs around the web have UUIDs or other garbage appended to the end for the sake of tracking, which I doubt they intend to do anything about any time soon, so what even is the point of hiding the protocol and a single subdomain? Just leave the URL alone.

RandomInteger4··on New bill would ban autoplay videos and endless scrolling
This is not a "whataboutism". This is a "The government doesn't need to tell me how long I'm allowed to have an erection-ism"; i.e. micromanaging bullshit is not in the purview of the federal government.
RandomInteger4··on A Trump-era purge of military scientists at a legendary think tank
... oh ... yeah, that's fucked.
RandomInteger4··on New bill would ban autoplay videos and endless scrolling
That's like saying "Why not both?" to eating healthy and putting your balls in a vice grip. Eating healthy in this analogy is the government making laws regarding actual problems that require government intervention, while the balls in vice grip in this analogy is a pointless law concerning something that doesn't require government intervention just because people have a moral panic over technology allegedly ruining society.
RandomInteger4··on A Trump-era purge of military scientists at a legendary think tank
How are missile defense systems not useful? The most obvious example of a useful missile defense system that comes to mind is the Iron Dome Defense System.
