Symbiote··on Jailbreaking my car's navigation system just so I can change the time
Do "many" Jewish people do this? It sounds like something only religious nutters would do, wasting energy etc. (Doesn't the bible/torah say people should take care of the earth?)

In 2019 there was a GPS week number rollover, another possible cause.

Symbiote··on Microsoft's Canada timezone troubles leave admins fixing calendars
But doing that breaks the opposite (and more common) problem: all the meetings in Alberta, planned before the change to the time zone was announced, will have the wrong hour.
Symbiote··on Microsoft's Canada timezone troubles leave admins fixing calendars
If someone in Alberta discussed a meeting with someone in Britain "let's say 12:00 London time" and the Albertan recorded that as 05:00 in their own calendar, then how can the software know that this should now be 06:00?

The Albertan could have set the time to 12:00 in Europe/London, but probably few people do this unless they're expecting to travel to the other place.

Symbiote··on DiscImageStudio: burn visible artwork onto CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs
For a very low-sales side business (my father's hobby) the discs looked sufficiently professional to impress the people buying them — mostly his friends.

The disc shown on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LightScribe looks normal.

If you're gaming friends can use it, IPv6 should work.

Also so the temperature can be controlled to make use of cheaper electricity — if you know it's going to be windy from 02:00 to 04:00, then still until 06:00, you can run the freezers a bit extra while the electricity is super cheap.

Symbiote··on Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard?
The UK had/has far too many companies following the 1990s privatization, but any company can sell a ticket on any route -- online, at a ticket office, or using a machine.

I don't know the rules, but at least the company with the cheaper/slower trains from London to Birmingham shows their faster/dearer competitor when searching, and vice-versa, although you do need to search "London Terminals" to "Birmingham Stations" rather than specific stations. (The trains use different stations.)

"This app is not available for your device". It's region-locked for a few countries (US, CA, AU, SG, HK, MY, TH.)

Symbiote··on Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard?
My experience was arriving by train company X to a large station, having bought what I thought was the correct ticket to continue with company Y. On the platform for company Y's train, there was a small sign in English reminding foreigners they actually needed two 'tickets' to use the train (just as the article mentions) and I'd only bought one of them. There was a machine just the other side of the adjacent ticket barrier to buy the missing part.

Except the custodian of the ticket barrier would not let me pass through to use the machine, since I had not entered through this barrier. He looked at my tickets, and said that since I had entered on company X's train, I must go to platform 48 or whatever and use the barrier there. I was on platform 1.

This was an enormous station, and I missed the intended train.

Another journey involved 7 printed tickets for a one way journey with a couple of changes.

But instead of simplifying this, the Japanese have invented a complicated ticket barrier where you can stuff in all 7 tickets together, and it clips the relevant one(s) and returns them in the correct order.

I can't find the interactive website, but ACEA have statistics. (I'm disappointed in HN that you have 6 replies without anyone linking the official statistics.)

Year to date in the EU + EFTA + UK, Tesla is 2.5%, BYD 2.7%, Chery 2.5%, of all new cars registered.

The interactive website allowed filtering for e.g. UK + electric cars, but maybe it's no longer available.

A glass front is a negative. Reflections always get in the way, and they therefore don't comply with worker safety rules in some countries.
Symbiote··on Washing machines took decades to catch on
I'm not interested in a cordless vacuum.

It's another battery to charge, so I'd have less flexibility of where to store it.

It's less effective than a corded machine.

100m² is reached with the cord plugged into the most central socket.

A €200 machine has so far lasted 10 years and still works perfectly.

Symbiote··on Washing machines took decades to catch on
The European Energy label is based on the "Eco 40-60°C" cycle.

I don't know about 0.2kWh, but I see a machine at Argos claiming 0.33kWh for this cycle.

Other parts are in the present tense. It's probably written by a Danish speaker.

But you can do your own searching, you seen determined that this doesn't exist.

Denmark would disagree, but with the limitation that the data centre needs to be sited in an appropriate location.

https://danmarksdagblad.dk/article/datacenter-paa-15-million...

https://pulse.microsoft.com/da-dk/transform-da-dk/government...

I don't think anywhere would want to be entirely reliant on a single datacentre, at least not at the scale of district heating use in Denmark.

(I gave some pages in Danish, you can search "Denmark datacentre district heat" yourself if you like.)

What was the purpose of this comment? It's obviously irrelevant, as it's only considering one type of low-carbon electricity.

I am reminded of the HCI lecturer at university whenever I use something other than my usual KDE desktop.

With a maximized or suitably positioned window, pushing the mouse all the way to the right of the screen activates the scroll bar. To the top right activates the close button.

Small things, but they become annoyances when they are missing.

On the other hand, to buy a car in a Chinese city you have to join the government waiting list and wait to be approved.

You'll also have the car's movements tracked in detail, etc.

If China's the 21st century, they can keep it.
