Waterfall··on Einstein's missed opportunity to rid us of 'spooky actions at a distance'
The universe isn't mathematical, it is explained by math, a country is not Chinese because I wrote a tour guide in Chinese about it. Infinite universes isn't really applicable here, you're thinking of a growing block universe. A simpler point is a block universe. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternalism_(philosophy_of_ti...

Tinfoil hats, cancer treatment, self driving cars or perhaps platoons for highways, smart homes that are easily hacked, wireless low powered implants that cause benign tumors that sue a tech company into bankrupty, but the shell company opens another 5g implant company.

Ever heard of pilot wave theory? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Broglie%E2%80%93Bohm_theo... It's an easy visualization that can be shown with speakers and liquid

Have you heard of Bohemian or pilot wave theory for QM? It's very rarely discussed except in darker corners of the internet but it's surprising to me it's not used as visualization. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Broglie%E2%80%93Bohm_theo...
Waterfall··on The Problem of Legacy IT Systems
My iPhone 12 is legacy because it's based on an iPhone released in 2007 and the software is also legacy because it's based on Unix which is 50+ years old. Glass is thousands of years old so it's legacy technology and the molecules are the same as those from the age of dinosaurs so it's very very legacy.
Waterfall··on Six Figures in 6 days
Are you used to iPhone? Would you try to make it work like the iPhone way?
Waterfall··on Six Figures in 6 days
Do you feel the same with an iPad? I do with my phone but I think it has more to do with your utility of it. The iTunes app may not look proper in your computer. Android may simply suit you better. Do you find yourself trying to make it work like Android?
Waterfall··on Say goodbye to hold music
Just press 0 until an operator comes. That's what I do. You don't need AI for that. This is too high tech for no reason. Might as well use an AI on your toothbrush that tells you where you need to brush more with an accelerometer and camera in the brush. Overkill. Tech users tend to have an issue putting tech into everything. They will insist/injecting on strange changes like moving with a drone for short distances instead of vehicles or other changes that have little benefit.

Well thats assuming the quality is good. News is so biased I don't feel like paying for it. Usually they tell you what they want me to think. The only publication I like (that has no noticible bias) is al jazeera which is free. The WP sucks and it's the only one off the top of my head that asked me to pay.
Waterfall··on Won’t Subscribe
How would you feel about paying for pirated content? If someone just had publication subscriptions they could simply charge a small fee and show all the content on the sites. I could see small groups even do this and every time someone joins the monthly fee goes down.
Waterfall··on Won’t Subscribe
How successful is it as a model for cash flow compared to the others? I can wait a week to see the kernel benchmarks or whatever so I don't see why anyone would subscribe if not to suppose it rather than need it. I never used the site I'm just assuming it's like phoronix.
Waterfall··on Won’t Subscribe
Word of mouth; the best advertising there is.
Waterfall··on Won’t Subscribe
You never read an article behind a Paywall that showed a first portion asking you to subscribe?
Waterfall··on Won’t Subscribe
This will be the onlyfans to bangbros. The model works as long as they are not popular enough to pirate if it even works at all. The cost of subscription is not high for the WP or many for a trial, so it's more likely someone pays $1 to subscribe with a temporary card than to buy the articles. Think of the news articles similar to the commodity of porn. What would you do? Buy one video, or download the whole catalog every few trials? Text is cheap. It's everywhere. It'a small. You will not be able to guard secret information easily. The disposable nature of news makes it very hard to value by article, I have NEVER once found a news article worth paying for. I wonder if anyone here has a counter to that point, an article that was worth subscribe for.
Waterfall··on Cement is the source of 8% of the world's CO2 emissions (2018)
False. It's common in volcanos. It's why Roman Cement is so good. That, salt water and pig blood.

Clothes are discarded but can be turned into rags or donations. Don't feel bad, I bought some very nice stuff for cheap and I didn't hurt the environment more. I'll just drive these wonderful finds I got for $5 30 miles home in my Hummer.
Waterfall··on Cement is the source of 8% of the world's CO2 emissions (2018)
Doesn't matter. The rags companies get clothing and Africa imports tons of clothing for free. The clothes aren't all just made and discarded, they often have a second life.

Low end selvedge denim lasts longer than a decade and even low quality denim lasts. You don't wear stuff out of fashion though, it would be like wearing the best of the 90s. You're also assuming that the clothes get worn. The cheaper stuff may just be worn as much as the high quality stuff or that they continue to be used.
Waterfall··on Tweet threads cured my writer's block: Twitter as a medium for sketching
The issue with blog posting is that you need to have a capture for the audience or a funnel. On HN you can be read immediately in the sea of comments but in a blog post it would have to be published and I would need to have someone find it for me or find it. It would be cool if there was a better way than reading comments on the blog post about their similar article.
Waterfall··on Tweet threads cured my writer's block: Twitter as a medium for sketching
I disagree, especially for the constraints. The best thing for writer's block is a few random generations of GPT2 until you like it. It lacks the feeback of Twitter but maybe that's a good thing.

You clearly never lived in Chicago or NYC. These Democrats make Republicans look like angels. They hire their friends as contractors, they do a poor job, then get paid to fix it. You're the ignorant one if you actually think one party is any better.
Waterfall··on The long golden age of our glorified junk
I repaired computers for free and I doubt that is the reason. Cheap computers are good because they're cheap, in they all reach a point of diminishing returns very quickly for basic browsing, so much that a basic arm phone that is free with prepaid is more than sufficient.

Desktops are luxury items that aren't needed anymore, laptops are quickly becoming those too. People don't need computers, their computing needs change too and the iPad is better at mobility so many people just get a tablet rather than a computer anyway. Even I question my need of using a full gnu Linux phone once I was able to get chrome desktop extensions in a browser on Android.

I'm old enough and Sears was never good and there are a lot more specialized and cheaper tools now from harbor freight. I doubt you had good tools either if you considered them high quality, they were good for the warranties, not for their quality. You'd return the screwdrivers after using it to mix cement.

I'm curious what Sears tools you considered high quality.

>It used to be possible to pay somewhat more to buy good quality products that would last for years or decades (obviously not for electronics)

My computer's from 2000s still work as does various 20+ year old CRTs. What products are you talking about? The nylon clothes that last forever, the food that doesn't go bad and has higher nutrition, the cheap micro USB that came with the thing that broke but the cable still works 9 years later?

What are these same price low quality goods you are plagued with?

DMT is this experience for me. I wasn't afraid of death until I took it. My body was gone, I lost my body and was engulfed in darkness for what felt like eternity. We fear the same feeling of darkness

Seems rather expensive, didn't you have another laptop laying around? I have so many that I don't think I'll ever see the point to them, especially with thinkpads for cheap or free
