YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Have you ever changed your DBMS for a site running in production?
In 16 years, this has only happened once. I had an application running on 64-bit MySQL. We had a legacy app running on 32-bit Oracle. New CTO came along and made me switch the new app to Oracle since he didn't want to support two DB platforms. Didn't have ORM or Stored Procs (MySQL didn't support SP at the time). The SQL wasn't that complicated, but it took me a week to convert the whole thing. Downgrading to 32-bit DB slowed it down considerably. I left the company once the update went live.
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Easiest document management system for a small business?
You should look into something like Sharepoint for this functionality. http://sharepoint.rackspace.com/
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Best Mac OS X Password Manager
I only use 1password across OSX, iOS and Windows. I share my vault via Dropbox as iCloud doesn't play nice w/ Windows yet. You can add custom fields into login records to save your 2FA stuff. Just flag the field as a password and it won't show in plain text until you "reveal" it. It's one of the few of these kinds of apps that are being integrated with other iOS apps at the moment (e.g. eBay, Uber and Disney). Safari already has an extension for 1password. I just tell it and Chrome to not ask to save passwords and log in via the extension.
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Which organization stores all flight ticket prices?
I worked at GetThere/Sabre for a few years. There is no public, free API for this information. There is no "all in one" Computer Reservation System out there. You have to go through any number of CRSs depending on which airlines you want to search.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_reservations_system#M...

For example, orbitz seems to still use the Galileo CRS. That CRS gets its data from a number of airlines, but not all. I'm also certain that no access to these CRSs would considered "affordable".

YoAdrian··on Do You Want Money or Do You Want Power?
In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Should I learn to program old machines?
You're the only one that can answer that question. Is it worth it _to you_ to learn with those old school restraints vs. modern architectures?

How about posting a direct link to the story? Oops, it's already been done.
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Is there a service like Stripe but for physical credit cards?
You want hardware to swipe a card, that's compatible with tablets and smart phones, but isn't a dongle (https://squareup.com/reader)? Or, I suppose, their POS stand (https://squareup.com/stand)?

Do you just not want to use their software? You want to use the hardware with your own app on a tablet or phone?

YoAdrian··on Ask HN: What are we doing wrong with our first paid mobile game?
Android May Outsell iPhone, But Developers Make More Money On iOS Apps

"Evans says that iPhone owners are more likely to spend money on apps, rather than skirt paid content for free ad-supported apps.

Android phones average $250-$300 where iPhones average $600,” Evans points out. “People who choose to spend the extra money are sending a signal about their intents.”

YoAdrian··on Ask HN: I have an idea how to become a competitor to Amazon. What should I do?
There's a professor I know that claims he can get you back to 1994, but beware: he keeps calling everyone Marty and thinks there are people out to get him.

YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Embossed numbers on credit/debit cards
Imprinters are always on-hand as backups in case the phone lines go down.
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Is HTML File Upload still needed for uploading files to server?
Apple devices have been able to upload files via HTML since iOS 6.

http://www.webmonkey.com/2012/09/new-html-tricks-for-web-dev...

If you want to incorporate Google Drive or Dropbox, go ahead, but know that many corporate environments block those services, which is why basic HTML file uploads are still the standard.

YoAdrian··on Ask HN: Why do uber drivers use iPhones exclusively?
Why would "conventional thinking" expect them to use Androids?

These are the drivers' personal cars and the drivers' personal phones. That's like saying "conventional thinking would expect Uber would have them all drive a Prius."

YoAdrian··on Ask HN: When a startup supplies a computer, do you own it?
This is something you need to clarify with the company. My company has remote employees, but they get company owned laptops, monitors, etc.. When the employee leaves the company, they have to ship the company owned equipment back. You need to have this clarified in writing if you expect to keep the equipment.
YoAdrian··on Why is there so much hate for .NET?
Welcome to my world. The only reason that ASP was created and therefore .NET was because years ago, the Allaire brothers told Microsoft "no thanks" when they tried to purchase their programming language called ColdFusion. Since 1997, when I started developing with CF, I've heard nothing but derision no matter how well it can handle complex tasks with ease. Every few months, someone without a clue but a huge audience posts another "death of ColdFusion" article and here come all the Ruby/Node/PHP fanboys piling on the hate.

Never mind that ColdFusion runs on the JVM.

Never mind that ColdFusion 11 was released a few weeks ago.

Never mind that there are TWO open source CFML engines out there.

Never mind that ColdFusion 12 is already under development.

And I don't hate .NET at all. Or Rudy or Node (can't stand PHP, but that's another matter).

Guess what? It's all the SAME S--T, different SYNTAX.

You know which language I love the most? Whichever one someone is currently paying me to use.

YoAdrian··on Ask HN: How should a software engineer go about making a website?
You might start with Github Pages: https://pages.github.com/. It's all Ruby and pretty easy to use.
YoAdrian··on Would you use java for your startup?
You might take a look at Groovy (http://groovy.codehaus.org/), it's a JVM language.
YoAdrian··on Need help recovering stolen URL from Steam
Why are you asking here? If Valve (Steam) can't find the account, then the hackers took it over, did whatever they did with it and most likely then deleted it. You might check the credit card associated with the account to see if any other games were bought from that account. They could have been purchased and transferred to another account. As for recovering the one you had? Forget it and start a new one.
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: How much to charge for first website?
If they're smart, they'll just make the website part of your work responsibilities and get it for free.
YoAdrian··on Ask HN: What's the best developer chair on a bootstrap budget?
Move everyone to standing desks and cut out the costs of chairs. I'm not joking. I've been using one for over a year and I can't bear to sit for long periods of time at work any more.
