__void··on Gemini AI
it's really amazing how in IT we always recycle the same ten names... in the last three years, "gemini" refers (at least) to:

- gemini protocol, the smolnet companion (gemini://geminiprotocol.net/ - https://geminiprotocol.net/)

- gemini somethingcoin somethingcrypto (I will never link it)

- gemini google's ML/AI (here we are)

__void··on Punica: Serving multiple LoRA finetuned LLM as one
it seems that in 2012, along with the end of the world, the possible acronyms/usable names for a project also ended
__void··on MemGPT: Towards LLMs as Operating Systems
still this is not an "operating system" nor does it in any way related to them;

please use the right words when you have to communicate, otherwise you just sound like scammers who want to sell pots with holes by passing them off as colanders

nice project, reminds me (a lot) of astrobotany on gemini

__void··on When a website erases your text you can use this trick to recover it
I know this is a bit offtopic but maybe someone can help me...

since *always* when i try to access https://merveilles.town/ the server gives me an error (the console shows an error 500 and site crashes there); it happens to me both from pc and mobile, both under wifi and cable and 4g... since that mastodon instance is the home of the 100 rabbits dudes, i'm so sorry i can't view their posts :(

__void··on Chandrayaan-3 Soft-landing [video]
very good, congratulations on the achievement!
__void··on India's Chandrayaan-3 launches to explore moons water rich South Pole
given that space is hard, any progress in this direction has real and practical repercussions for all of humanity; for example, knowing how to handle metals, chemicals, mechanical systems, logical systems (production chains and industrial production), lighter and more powerful computers, human biology and so on

furthermore, the fascination with space missions generates hordes of inspired children who will study and thus this plant the seeds of scientists for future generations who will solve tomorrow's problems (in practice, it is a long-term investment)

of the race to the moon we now have the practical and common use of transistors and chips, led, batteries, pace makers, medical pumps, thermal insulation and dozens of other things we use and take for granted every day

to prefer little and bad immediately at the expense of much and good in the future is a very short-sighted and stupid attitude

oh god... that dough looks more like frozen pizza, apart from in some tourist traps I have never seen it served seriously in my area
__void··on Reddit is going to remove mods of private communities unless they reopen
> He hasn’t alienated anyone. The vast majority of users [...]

you were not entitled by anyone to speak on behalf of everyone, Mr. Account with twelve days of live

> My only qualm

while you are worried about the video player, the moderators (who have been working for free for years to at least make the place where you watch your funny videos decent) have been waiting for decades for the tools to be able to moderate, and they have been promised dozens of times (all lies)

if you had problems with some power tripping powermods (no one denies they exist) that doesn't mean everyone is like that: have better judgement and measure your words

__void··on A proto-pizza emerges from a fresco on a Pompeii wall
> There's also a type of pizza that is round but thick,

do you mean 'pizzetta'?

__void··on A proto-pizza emerges from a fresco on a Pompeii wall
or from 'pinsa' (from the Latin verb 'pinsere' or from the verb 'pansere', 'to pound'), or from the Greek dish plakous or from the piada (or piadina), mentioned in Virgil's Aeneid

frankly speaking, I don't think we can find the true origin of this dish, it's like looking for the inventor of the wheel or the three-year rotation

either way, the history of modern pizza in northern Italy is truly fascinating (and controversial)[1]

__void··on SnarkOS: A decentralized operating system for zero-knowledge applications
Using wrong names on purpose to attract users is a good indicator of the irrelevance/uselessness of a project

cryptobros are masters of confusion (web3, somethingOS, 'zero proof' and so on)

__void··on Unihiker, an $80 single-board PC with 2.8“ touchscreen, quad-core ARM Cortex-A35
they are very different, esp32 is an advanced microcontroller (with wifi/bt) and is comparable to an arduino on steroids, whereas this board uses cortex a35 and is more comparable to a raspberry

esp32 has 520 Kb of ram, while this board has 512 Mb!

__void··on The Matrix Cookbook (2012) [pdf]
yes I was a little disappointed, ngl

a post-apocalyptic recipe book would be really interesting (canned cultivated meat, mycotissues, texturised hydroponic soya and boiled grains, yummm)

mmh we are saying the same thing, so I suppose there was a linguistic misunderstandig, English is not my native language
__void··on New Taschen book on the history of the computer
Seeing that it's also in this book (which I would like to buy, btw) I can't help but comment on the myth of the 'first bug' in computing: it's a historical fake, see for example here[1]

__void··on IntelligentPad (1989): a component-based drag-and-drop software creator
yes, [in vvvv] they've changed the site many times (it's an early 2000s project) and in the current iteration it's more commercial than technical...

however there used to be screenshots[0]! always praise be to the wayback machine

ah and there is also a javascript version[1]!

apparently they've also changed the colours of the environment, it used to be in light shades of grey now it looks all dark mode (which I personally detest and find illegible)

__void··on IntelligentPad (1989): a component-based drag-and-drop software creator
never heard of it but this vaguely reminds me of labview (still widely used in factory infrastructure and R&D)

another similar environment that 20 years ago I thought would become the new desktop/programming metaphor is vvvv[0]

__void··on One line of code that did cost $8k
...every now and then my brain reminds me that all of LOTR is 3.11mb, The Betrothed (by Manzoni) is 1.2mb and Inferno (by Dante) only 550 kb and then I wonder what the hell we are doing in this century...
__void··on The rescue of the Salyut 7 space station
another very very good Russian-Hollywoodian style film is 'The Age of Pioneers' about the absolute madness of the Voskhod 2 (first spacewalk...they were mad as hell)

of a different kind but still beautiful is 'Out of the Present', which shows the daily activities filmed by the single cosmonaut who remained on board the mir during the fall of the urss.

__void··on The unintentional dystopian beauty of oil rigs
I don't think there is a word to express the melancholic fascination with megastructures, but I certainly suffer from it:

...the intricate patterns of stairs, windows, pergolas and cables, the chaotic and seemingly random arrangement of supports, the organic tumefying rust that de-patterns the otherwise perfect recursiveness...

it is the same feeling that makes one appreciate kowloon walled city and Tsutomu Nihei's superb early works, to give two examples

the definition of flour is "ground substances," see also bone flour, fossilized flour, stone flour...

__void··on Italy moves to ban lab-grown meat to protect food heritage
because in government right now are far-right populists who have to distract the masses from the fact that they are not doing anything they promised in the election campaign

in recent months the issues have been banning rave parties, banning documents for children of lgbt couples and war on cricket flour

__void··on Italy moves to ban lab-grown meat to protect food heritage
that article here in italy sparked endless controversy, low-level dumbass jokes and even some minor politicians had to have their stupid say; obviously, as italians, no one read the article or even a single line. that said, for those in the industry, nothing in that article is new.

regarding some things about food, here in italy the rule is don't ask and don't tell
