_mdpn··on Zip Files: History, Explanation and Implementation
It really does. There are two things that fit together for me:

First, access - I can think of twelve bars within walking distance of my apartment, four of which are on the same block, and a total of eight of which are within two blocks of my apartment. Almost every grocery store has a liquor store as a part (not separate store, just separate section with a register), and some stores, like WalMart, sell booze in the normal aisles. It's everywhere.

Second, culture - in Wisconsin, if you're under 21 but a parent, guardian, or spouse then you are allowed to be served, possess, or consume alcohol, so teenagers drinking at home as part of a party is completely legal in the state. Bars are so close to the house, and every area has their own, so social drinking, especially when the winter is cold and dark (in parts of the state in parts of the winter, the sun is set by 4:30 in the afternoon), is very popular. Many of the locals, if they're religious, come from a history of Catholic, Lutheran, and similar religions that were typically not parts of the temperance movement, and many of the cultures that settled the land - Scandinavian and German most commonly - are also known for their relationship to alcohol.

Third, recent developments - the part of Milwaukee I'm in was decimated when the manufacturing base was systematically hollowed out in the late 1980s through the current day. Desperation and escape are two motivators to drink, and there are parts of the community that I'm in that have been hit hard by that.

Lewis Black has a bit about drinking in Wisconsin. It is exaggerated, but only slightly so, in a way that I didn't quite understand before I moved here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WlwumGkSec

Speaking from experience (856 days sober, had my last drink a year after moving to Milwaukee), Milwaukee is a hell of a town for an alcoholic.

One of my favorite coffee shops is right near the PKWARE building off Pittsburgh Ave.

Margaret Sanger unapologetically supported eugenics and sterilizing 'inferior' people. Does that make Planned Parenthood a bad idea?
_mdpn··on Where’s _why? (2012)
It's interesting how parasocial interactions form, often without us consciously doing so or meaning to. The drive to form these associations seem to be wired more deeply than the side of our brain that listens to reason.

There's a decent article called "Parasocial Interaction in the Digital Age"[0] that describes this phenomenon occuring through YouTube, and I would not be the least bit surprised to find that it's applicable to the situation of _why discussed here.

>users have little expectation of privacy to begin with?

The cynical side of me wonders how long it will be before prosecutors argue, with a straight face, that using evidence obtained from mass surveillance against people using Microsoft Windows is okay because Microsoft collects a massive amount of data so nobody should expect their files and activities to remain private; that there is or should be no expectation of privacy on such a system.

And then how long until warrant applications come in with supporting evidence that the subject of the warrant uses Linux and therefore their increased desire for privacy is prima facia evidence that they're doing something illegal.

I just moved to Catalina, and the fact that zsh has a clear and reasonable standard for startup files made up for the fact that I had to move my shell init to its files.
_mdpn··on Cash/Consent: The war on sex work
Anecdata here, but I knew a couple of sex workers (one was a stripper, one was an escort) at university. Both of them looked at their options - food service worker, work/study job in the bookstore, and retail employee at the local big box stores and decided that the level of compensation, ability to set one's own hours, ability to choose ones own clients, and relative level of risk was such that being a sex worker was more remunerative and gratifying.

They had other options. They chose sex work knowing the risks, knowing they could quit if they wanted to, and knowing their alternatives.

I'm aware that not every sex worker enters sex work that way, but it's equally wrong to say that all sex workers do sex work because they have no other options.

If you think that the n-word is only used to harm others then I assume you haven't listened to any late 20th and 21st century music. Context matters. That said, its use to racially insult people is shameful and not something I support.

>"Furthermore, there isn’t a standard API for getting screen shots from Wayland. It’s dependent on what compositor (window manager/shell) the user is running, and if they implemented a proprietary API to do so."

Sway's compositor implements a way to do this as only it has access to all of the display data, but there is no standard way outside of the compositor to do this under Wayland.

The consequence of this is that every program that wants to do a screencast (Skype, Discord, etc) will have to integrate with specific compositors to do this - there is no standard way to do this across all compositors like under X.

_mdpn··on Developers don’t want to show gameplay at E3 anymore
The amount of turd polishing that goes on for an E3 demo is massive. I had a friend that worked in the AAA games space, and he said that between half and three quarters of the team would halt work on moving the game forward and focus for three to four months on polishing the demo shown at E3.
_mdpn··on Developers don’t want to show gameplay at E3 anymore
>Good. The amount of abuse the gaming industry has heaped upon consumers the past ten years is almost beyond belief.

Not to mention how they chew up and spit out the people making the games.

It's really frustrating to me how inaccessible Discord is. At its heart, Discord is text and voice chat, which you would think would be the easiest forms of communication to make accessible.

Due to a genetic condition I have that predisposes me to blindness I have preemptively installed NVDA on Windows and Orca on Linux, and the inability of either of these tools to deal with Discord the last time I tried is shameful.

_mdpn··on When Microsoft's eBook store closes, your books disappear too
The ebook no longer exists. That's the point. Whether or not the item is available in print is irrelevant as the person who paid for it did not pay for a physical copy.

>Do you choose to either prosecute a burgler or put a lock on your door but not both?

Physical property and intellectual property are not the same, so this analogy does not hold.

Copyright is fundamentally a balancing act between these two opposing interests:

  - the right of a creator to make money of their creation for a limited time

  - the right of the public "to promote the progress of science and useful arts"
There is no such duty for a physical property owner to allow others to access, view, or build upon his property.

If you choose to use technological means to deny society the second interest above you should not also be allowed to claim the protection of the first interest above.

_mdpn··on Ask HN: What have you found the most useful interview question to be?
The first question you propose is the first question I ask in every interview that I conduct, and I can count on my fingers the number of people who have given me a satisfactory answer to this question. It really colors my perception of your skills - whether you lied on your resume, whether you were dead weight on your team while they did all of the work, whether you were clueful about what was going on where you were working before, and so on.

The only time that I have recommended someone be hired who was not able to answer this question was when they were under an NDA and were not able to talk about the work they had done. That candidate aced the practical side of the interview that I gave ("Here's a scenario at a high level using the skills you claim to have, what would you do and why?") and is the best worker I have ever recommended to hire.

_mdpn··on Homebrew 1.9.0
Yes, I know that I have to make a judgement call about whether or not to trust infrastructure I don't own, and I have made that judgement, but I'm asking for myself and others if the Homebrew project haa any additional information I and others can use to make that evaluation.

It is frustrating that you are being so opaque and dismissive. You still haven't answered my earlier question if the Homebrew project has published a summary of the results of these security reviews (I understand not posting the entire review publicly). A quick Google search did not turn up anything, which is why I am asking.

For contrast: I can find out the build process for a Debian package from their website[1]. While they do have some private operation documentation, they also publish the process by which packages get pulled into their system, built, and pushed to the mirrors[2][3]. They have documentation for how to replicate their build environment and build packages on my own[4]. This documentation is open, and I can verify packages with it as they move toward reproducible builds[5]. I understand that Debian is a much larger operation with a much longer history. I understand that it takes time to develop these things. This is not an attack on the Homebrew project or the work they do.

The stores wouldn't even need to be wired up to the Internet. All they would need is a call center to dispatch pizza orders to the stores or a fax machine if they wanted to dispatch orders without a voice call, both mature, widely deployed tech at the time.
