abawany··on Visa, Mastercard, major banks facing new litigation over 'anticompetitive' fees
QT is doing that ime but reading the app reviews, it seems they will send you straight to collections if any ach withdrawal fails even if the glitch, according to the users, lies with QT. Reading these killed any desire to go through this on my part, even with the "10c off gas" sweetener attached.
abawany··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
yes, for example they have Ecosia but not Qwant (they are said to share their index but for my searches, I often flip over to Qwant when Ecosia results for the same query are not adequate.) I understand why Safari went with a search engine whitelist but I wish there was a way to make exceptions.
abawany··on Nitter project received cease and desist
Multi-publish is a thing that is managed by numerous publishers. Right now, most govt sites ime no longer publish at all on their sites or rss but instead update one of facebook or twitter, depending on their preference. If they can afford to buy 70k usd suvs at taxpayer expense, they should also be able to figure out how to publish on mechanisms without walls, such as rss or their own site.
abawany··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
I made the mistake of searching it yesterday via a proxy while trying to search for local police news (why do our govts use these mechanisms to publish first) and ran into threads calling for ethnic cleansing of south asians from Texas. Not a great read.
abawany··on Hax – a minimalist, terminal-native coding agent written in C
I just installed it via homebrew on macos and used the anthropic-compatible custom provider option to configure it to use with deepseek-flash and then used this setup to build a quick rust project that I had been deferring for months - total cost: 1 us cent and under 10 minutes total for setup and etc. Thank you for making such a lean and clean option.
abawany··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
Yep, around 18% higher not including tip, in my estimate. HEB (local Texas grocery chain featured here a few days ago) puts in just a 3% margin for pickup or delivery (before tip.) Walmart and Sams have no special delivery/pickup margin but instead charge delivery fees that can be avoided by membership levels or order amount thresholds.
abawany··on I told them forced consent was unlawful. 5 years later it cost Elkjop €1.8M
I've also read reviews of Greystar properties where the reviewers expressed shock at being forced to consent to such abuse.
abawany··on Security researcher says Microsoft built a Bitlocker backdoor, releases exploit
I was once (12 years ago) told: "they debate, they decide, we deliver" along with other "teamwork" pablum. This evil has been with us for a very long time, unfortunately.
abawany··on Trapped in the dark web – a crisis growing in the shadows
I found the anti-encryption undertone of this article interesting, especially the focus on Apple.
abawany··on ReMarkable Paper Pure
agree - the hardware seems comparable to the Pocketbook Inkpad One (https://pocketbook.ch/en-ch/catalog/e-notes/pocketbook-inkpa...) but the latter is available for a lower price with no subscription.
abawany··on Amazon is discontinuing Kindle for PC on June 30th
I prefer it as I don't like the following things about the kobo: ads for their stuff on the front page, and cumbersome sync (they seem to use a sqlite db to scan the loaded books on each sync, which for my ebooks takes a long while.) By comparison, pocketbook is what I want in a device: a file manager like interface to access my library, no fuss sync (via rsync and usb, primarily - I use their cloud to store books to read across devices), a good ecosystem of third party installs, and a front page that just features my books instead of whatever they want me to buy.
abawany··on Amazon is discontinuing Kindle for PC on June 30th
the drm is the reason why I never bought any kindle along with the relatively small non-expandable onboard storage, though the dx was tempting to me for a bit. I've stuck with Kobo, Pocketbook, and reMarkable and have been happy with them.
abawany··on Microsoft account bugs locked me out of Notepad – Are thin clients ruining PCs?
macos has gotten worse about this in recent releases - I was astounded when I learnt that apple news, apple books, and apple music are uninstallable; these are still removable on ios but not on macos for some reason.
abawany··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
Hetzner offers managed nextcloud and storage instances.
abawany··on Framework Raises DDR5 Memory Prices by 50% for DIY Laptops
I upgraded my laptop from 32gb to 64gb (should have gotten 96gb) over the summer and I'm considering the same for the leftover 32gb - fear of not having spares in case of defects holds me back though.
abawany··on Ask HN: Quality of recent gens of Dell/Lenovo laptops worse than 10 years ago?
I got a Lenovo Legion 7i with a i9-13 and a rtx gpu for work and I have been very happy with it. Build quality is solid imo, it is very upgradable, and the battery size is generous with easily configurable charge limiting. Lenovo also seems to have good support so far. All in all, a professional experience for a consumer device from my point of view.
abawany··on What's Hiding Inside Haribo's Power Bank and Headphones?
One of mine bought in 2017 was recalled and replaced, which impressed me: how many of the word salad brands of today would even be around to handle a recall if their devices decide to spontaneously combust?
abawany··on Mozilla says it's finally done with Onerep
I never said you endorsed the donations, just that it seems to me to pointless to mention, as a response to my original post, given the ad/search revenue. My question remains why Mozilla (not you) seems against taking direct donations when they engage in other donation collection activities. I don't think we are taking opposing points here - I would like Mozilla to take donations to provide a clean browser to its fans (including me). Further, it just seems strange that the ad/search revenue number seems to be some line in stone - can't they operate a browser without the hundreds of millions of ad/search deals?
abawany··on Mozilla says it's finally done with Onerep
In one of your other posts, you talk about their merch sales and others also talk about their bundling of services such as vpn and etc., which all also sound like small potatoes. Does that not sound contradictory? Why bother with any of this if search licensing covers their costs many times over? And if merch and mozilla branded bundles work, then why not also let the users fund them like Thunderbird allows instead of enraging these users by signing them up unsolicited for things such as "privacy preserving ads" and such?
abawany··on Mozilla says it's finally done with Onerep
it's particularly strange to see Mozilla engage in these silly machinations when the Thunderbird team has moved on to the model of direct user funding.
abawany··on Firefox expands fingerprint protections
when I used to subscribe to the nyt, I had to block a few of their endpoints to kill the awful popups and etc. This, the further ads for paying subscribers, and a host of other issues led me to drop them as well though.
abawany··on The R47: A new physical RPN calculator
Mine is unfortunately now dead - the display has gone dark even though the device is functional. At some point I'll have to look into a repair or replace with something from SwissMicro.
abawany··on Greg Newby, CEO of Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, has died
I will cherish his email response to me when I emailed PG about a donation issue a few years ago and he helped resolve the situation. I remain grateful to PG for their amazing work. RIP Greg.
abawany··on US airlines are pushing to remove protections for passengers and add more fees
When I used to have carry-ons, boarding early ensured that I got room in the overhead bins to place the bag. I now use under-seater bags only and pack light so I no longer care when I get to my seat.
abawany··on The HackberryPi CM5 handheld computer
I got the Hackberry Pi Zero from Elecrow recently and it has been excellent for playing around. I really miss real keyboards on mobile devices and it has been fulfilling to use it.
abawany··on Open hardware desktop 3D printing is dead?
One thing I've noticed and have also seen on Project Farm YT tool reviews is that Harbor Freight tiers tend to be by country: lowest end is often from mainland China but the next higher tier is from Taiwan.
abawany··on Ask HN: What Pocket alternatives did you move to?
I also switched to their hosted/paid offering and currently have no plans to self-host. I also aftee that the import tool from Pocket just worked and did a great job.
abawany··on Next month, saved passwords will no longer be in Microsoft’s Authenticator app
it seems to be a push notification where the ms authenticator doesn't generate a code until I first log into the vpn using exchange creds but tbf, I didn't look hard enough for alternatives so you are probably right that I could use any totp app.
abawany··on Next month, saved passwords will no longer be in Microsoft’s Authenticator app
IME some MS shops enforce use of it for 2fa to access company resources like vpn and etc. - for eg, the only reason this app exists on my phone is so I can log into my employer's vpn.
