Design, front end, back end, sysadmin, sales, management...not a ninja, not a rock star.

actionscripted··on SkyBlue – Small SASS framework
I agree. I've actually taken to using table/table-cell for primary/container grids because it works in IE 8+ and with border-spacing I can set consistent grids with (fixed) sizes if needed to suit a design.
actionscripted··on Why Every Movie Looks Sort of Orange and Blue
I've always wondered if part of the reason for the blue/green shift beyond storytelling was due to blue/green screens used heavily throughout the movie.

I would imagine it helps smooth some rough edges during the compositing phase when the overall grade matches the color key.

actionscripted··on Running Go on Azure Web Sites
We've been looking at Azure and other services like Amazon's Elastic Beanstalk and truly the one thing that would make it all easier to explore is a solid guide for common software.

Great, I've got an instance running! How do I handle DB setup? What about app/media storage? How do we add SSL?

You can generally work your way through adding the necessary systems to the stack and gluing things together but an official guide or two would be invaluable and give me the feeling that I'm doing things The Right Way.

actionscripted··on Texture Study: Dormant Grass
Does the author release the code behind his generated images?
actionscripted··on Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian fights for a free and open Internet
I've been a Redditor for 8 years and I have never seen any of the current or former staff condone or encourage Internet mob justice.

My observation has been that they're pretty hands-off even when things get out of control and they often drop into a thread or put up a blog response that almost chides the community for their overall actions.

Perhaps their (mostly) hands-off approach is what makes you think they're not against Internet mob justice? Any admin moderation leads to a Streisand effect giving the problem more visibility and it is very much a problem with the community at times.

actionscripted··on Google Inbox
> I don't understand why people want some algorithm to sort your email...if it's too much, then used rules and folders/labels.

What, really, is the difference? I see many of Gmail's changes as the automatic equivalent to rules/labels and they have a massive sample set to base it all on.

actionscripted··on Show HN: I built an Android game after work with a friend in 6 months
So you wrote yours in a singe snackathon? Congrats!
actionscripted··on Reddit Acquires Alien Blue, the Most Popular Unofficial Reddit App
I haven't played with it but I know you can sticky a self-post as a mod. What about putting your sidebar content up as a sticky self-post if it is that important to your sub?

Might be annoying to see for some but it'll be very visible for Alien Blue users.

actionscripted··on Tyupkin: Manipulating ATM Machines with Malware
I'm surprised with how strict PCI compliance rules are for most integrations that a crusty OS with all sorts of holes is allowed to continue as the backbone of so many ATMs. I would think that something *NIX-y would be a solid bet at this point. Can't be worse than XP.
actionscripted··on CVE-2014-6271: Remote code execution through bash
For me in 10.9.5:

  $ bash --version
  GNU bash, version 3.2.51(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin13)
Copyright (C) 2007 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
actionscripted··on Ask HN: Hackers who cook
1. Recreation. I love chopping, stirring, mixing, tasting. I'm doing keto and it's easier to stay on track cooking at home.

2. No. Usually I start with "what sounds good?"

3. Primarily Mexican and Italian dishes and lots of salads.

4. Keto.

5. Learn to use a knife properly.

actionscripted··on Why Companies Write Terrible Job Posts
I might add to the "how" that these sorts of listings oftentimes end up in a system that allows for search. Maybe Monster, maybe just Google. A well-written job posting might cull certain phrases that could perform well in a search.
actionscripted··on Show HN: Mjolnir, an automation/productivity app for OS X
It'd be awesome if there were a brew cask formula for install/setup.
actionscripted··on Ideal Image Slider
If you need a responsive, touch-friendly slider/carousel I would strongly recommend Royal Slider [1]. One of the best sliders/carousels I've seen with tons of options (lazy load, thumbnails, etc.) and there's a WordPress plugin version that's great for clients that want to control their sliders/carousels.

actionscripted··on Affinity Designer – Illustrator alternative
I like the ability to darken or lighten the UI but I absolutely hate working with their non-native, wildly inconsistent UI.

And I hate the rounded corners options in the size panel now.

actionscripted··on Total darkness at night key to success of breast cancer therapy
Turn off the TV, get something like F.lux on your mobile/tablet or don't use it and if you need light get something with low-blue output.

I searched for a long time to find a room light that avoided blue light and you have options with dimmer stands and certain bulbs. I ended up with some absurd-looking salt lamp that casts a soft orange light and has a dimmer (and allegedly releases magical ions that purify or clean the air -- not buying this last one).

actionscripted··on Show HN: MechanicalSoup, Python library for automating interaction with websites
Unfortunately there isn't a Capybara library for Python. There are comparable packages like Lettuce and now MechanicalSoup (to a certain extent).
actionscripted··on Watch London in real time: tweets, tubes, etc.
What an amazing site to build as a companion to a video game. Can anyone explain if this is somehow integral to the game itself?
actionscripted··on Discover a startup every time you open a new tab
If nothing else, a page like http://startuptabs.com/tab/ that doesn't have the install overlay on every load might be nice (essentially just startframe with your page info). That way users can at least set that as their new tab URL without having to wait for a proper plugin.
actionscripted··on Django 1.7 RC1
I'd start with Django's own tutorials and docs. Then check out Two Scoops of Django for 1.6 (Two Scoops Press) followed by Pro Django (Apress).
actionscripted··on Understanding Apple's Wearables Strategy
I still don't feel that Apple's next big move will be wearables. I think it's going to be something you can use in your living room, likely with games. Maybe iOS devices as game controllers.

Why is everyone so certain the iWatch is happening? Maybe I've been out of the loop but I haven't seen a confirmed, legitimate statement from Apple about it and I really don't see why Apple would release one. Watches aren't as common, the screen size leaves little utility and you've probably got your phone nearby anyways.

Happy to be totally wrong but I think a living room play makes more sense than a wrist play.

actionscripted··on HackerRankX Wants To Kill The Resume
Oh and you should probably be able to manage people, prepare budgets and handle sales calls.
actionscripted··on Compressor.io – Compress and optimize your images
Why bother with Pied Piper? Nucleus will launch soon and I'd rather trust my data to an established brand like Hooli than an unknown startup.
actionscripted··on Should Programmers Also Provide Customer Support? Eight Tips We Learned.
Personally, I like immediate responses from a support person who can run issues by a developer if necessary. Developers shouldn't have to spend any time walking a user through logging in, helping explain how to import data, etc.

I don't see support as a valuable use of developer time, and I don't think that developers should patch code on the fly in response to a single support ticket.

I also worry that what might be a well-meaning response with a few technical details can come off as very condescending.

If you're a small team and you don't have a dedicated client coordinator or support person then of course your developers are also support -- you don't have any options. If you do have options it's best to have someone between the customer and the developer. If for no other reason than to screen common/simple issues and ensure a timely, polite response.

actionscripted··on New Funding for Automattic
I have no idea -- this is just a thought. Perhaps it's because Tumblr as a platform controls its entire user base while WordPress has an OSS variant that allows anyone to work with their code beyond Automattic's control.

When you value Tumblr, it's everything. When you value Automattic/WordPress you're valuing their hosting and paid packages but perhaps aren't putting a figure to their OSS offerings?

I agree that it doesn't seem to make much sense.

actionscripted··on The Graphing Calculator Story (2004)
The bundled app now is Grapher, which isn't a part of this legend.
actionscripted··on Firefox 29
> Reload/Stop button is now forced to be in the URL bar (before users had a choice where to place it). That's pretty annoying, it's very uncomfortable when Back/Forward and Reload buttons are so far apart.

My ONLY issue with FF 29. I prefer my back/forward buttons near stop/reload and for both groups to be near the middle after the URL/awesome bar.

actionscripted··on Firefox 29
At this point some of the most beloved browser features in nearly every browser came from Opera.
actionscripted··on TechCrunch covered Vic Gundotra's departure badly
It's even worse for the content creator. Over the last two weeks a video I put on YouTube spiked to millions of views and trying to track the comments is insane.

You get an email about activity, you see activity on the YouTube comments, you see activity through G+ notifications -- and none of it makes sense.

Did this action occur on G+? YouTube? Is this a reply to something somewhere else? What the hell is going on?

I don't mind G+ integration at all, and I think it's a good step forward, but it is simply not working well on services like YouTube at the moment and impedes use.

Also, spam control for comments is just broken. Scroll down, hover, maybe the yellow "review spam comments" box appears and maybe it doesn't. I found it interesting that G+ shares were very, very frequently marked as spam.

actionscripted··on Slick – Carousel
Clients/bosses love them and to them they ARE the best UI element to use. I've had this discussion with hundreds of clients and they just won't budge -- they want a carousel, make it so.
