adzm··on MS Paint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Well this is Microsoft Windows so... argyle?
adzm··on Show HN: After a decade of reversing, I got co-op working in DOS Wing Commander
Not sure what game's save file it was, but I remember learning about big vs little endian this way. And before that, why I would suddenly get negative money if I made it too big!

Berulis, a cybersecurity architect with the NLRB, filed a whistleblower complaint alleging that within 15 minutes of DOGE team members creating new user credentials and demanding administrative access, multiple login attempts using those exact credentials originated from a Russian IP address

adzm··on C++26 Disapproved
So is he a hero, or villain? Does it all come down to concepts?
adzm··on C++26 Disapproved
As a big c++ fan, new projects are generally choosing Rust, which I would agree with, even though I do indeed love C++
adzm··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
MSSQL query optimizer is one of the best available. If you have truly insane queries, views needing joins on views and CTEs, etc, you might be surprised at how well SQL Server was handling them versus PostgreSQL.
adzm··on Show HN: I built a multiplayer game where you're an aerial fighter cat
Would be cool if the default game mode changed when there were enough players; I think everyone goes into the catnip mode just because it is default, no one is ever in the other modes!

adzm··on Forging a Microsoft Edge Full Chain with Logic Bugs Only
> with a simple fetch(...) with credentials included, you can easily grab any Microsoft Edge user’s email from any website

Wow, this is disturbing on its own

adzm··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
Win32 API is great and responsive; ATL/WTL (and MFC) are still very useful abstractions with little cost. The biggest pain point is having to handle a lot of things manually, like DPI awareness (and themed controls). Even things like Emoji and other modern text features are not available through GDI and require DirectWrite iirc. Still, I'm surprised how useful it manages to be regardless how old it is.
adzm··on Somebody please stop the spam texts
Frustratingly they will send from new numbers each time, so just 'unsubscribing' from one will not really do anything. They will use websites/domains that don't respond to anything unless they have the path in the text message too. It's maddening. Here in Ohio I am getting nearly 100 a day recently. I would like to block unknown numbers, but I have kids and I certainly don't want to miss an emergency message.

Another interesting strategy was to not upgrade to hotels in order to create a housing crisis by using up all the houses
adzm··on Evolving Threat: http2shell is an RCE in Node, Python, and more
Interestingly the commit that fixes this in brotli dates back to February https://github.com/google/brotli/commit/0ed4268a4401abcb4472...
adzm··on DNS: A Replacement for Finger

What does this mean, I see a bunch in the lookup but I don't understand the ddos part

Rough and tough do rhyme...

adzm··on OpenSSL 4.1.0
I think this is the only software project I use that still requires me to have perl
adzm··on The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial
I am certain it would be. The fact that it exists at all is a pretty solid indication of that. Not to mention this vacuous comment thread.
adzm··on The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial

:D.

adzm··on Eight Bits of Trust: eMudhra's CA keys cracked in milliseconds
You are technically correct, the best kind of correct! Though I have a feeling we'll never see a 384-bit CSRNG generate 352 0-bits in a row in this Universe's lifetime.

That said, a sanity check on the value somewhere in the code would indeed have prevented this.

adzm··on Chicago O'Hare digs up 50-ton boulder under airfield, asks public for name ideas

adzm··on JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases
JPEG transcoding is one of the neatest features of JXL; there is so much existing jpeg out there. Eventually that may be unnecessary, but it's looking like this could already save a significant amount of space for photo archive backups for example.
adzm··on JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases
Is there an advantage to this as a separate layer compared to just having an alpha channel baked into the image data itself? If not premultiplied then it would not affect the other channels either.
adzm··on JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases
> AVIF is basically the keyframe format of AV1 video, with a bunch of still-image-specific optimisations thrown in. Animated AVIF however, is pretty much just a repackaging of AV1 video. You can convert an AV1 MP4 to AVIF and back losslessly - it's just a container change. That's why it performs so much better, because it's built for motion.

So, is animated AVIF only keyframes / p-frames, where each frame is independent from the other? I was under that impression, uncertain if there are any other capabilities it might have (like only updating part of the canvas when only parts change, like GIF supports)

adzm··on Secret of Orange Cats Revealed After 60-Year Search
Most likely this is because orange cats are almost always male, and (neutered) male cats tend to be goofier than females.

I think the association with discrimination against red haired humans is a stretch though
