ai_what··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
So you also believe the "socialist parties" aren't actually socialist?
ai_what··on Sharing new research, models, and datasets from Meta FAIR
I can't speculate that for you. Try reaching out to them if you must know.
ai_what··on Sharing new research, models, and datasets from Meta FAIR
Try a different email address, that's what fixed it for me.
ai_what··on Sharing new research, models, and datasets from Meta FAIR
Yes, Yann LeCun posted about it on twitter ~2 weeks ago.

Edit, it was a month ago: https://twitter.com/ylecun/status/1793181068943639014

ai_what··on Deepseek Coder V2 Beats GPT-4o, Opus
Was the lite model also tested?
ai_what··on Show HN: Paste2Download – No Login, No Ads, Download Videos Watermark Free
Very nice, I was looking for something like this.

The only feedback I have is that on the frontpage it says "Download any tiktok video" but you support more websites than just tiktok. So maybe add that piece of information :)

ai_what··on Tell HN: YC Hired Wire Fraud Soliciting. Ask: Best Way to Report to Authorities?
Isn't that just what the average spam email these days does? Scrape emails and try to engage in fraud? I'm not saying it's ok but....

It seems kind of a waste of time to hunt one particular instance of this down. I can give you the emails in my spam folder, it's full of these kinds of people.

ai_what··on Show HN: Yesterday's Domains levels up expired domain finding platform
My 2 cents: you should offer a limited free plan so people can see if it's worth it.
ai_what··on Vercel ends open-source sponsorship program giving projects 24hr notice
Yeah this is strange. If they are using, lets say $1000 in credits per day, then they will be charged $700 starting tomorrow. Like you said, they might not even see the email yet.
ai_what··on Mozilla defies Kremlin, restores banned Firefox add-ons in Russia
Russia often bans entire websites and IP ranges, making it harder for non-tech people to get certain software.

Mozilla was likely hoping that nobody from the West would notice that they complied and removed the addons.

Just goes to show you how all those "values" they stand for only matter when it doesn't make them lose any users.

ai_what··on Meta Open-Sources Megalodon LLM for Efficient Long Sequence Modeling
Didn't this happen in April?

Edit: Yes it did, https://github.com/XuezheMax/megalodon

ai_what··on Surprisingly high levels of toxic gas found in Louisiana
From the article:

> The EPA just announced stricter rules on ethylene oxide that would require commercial sterilizing outfits to dramatically reduce emissions.

ai_what··on Qwen2 LLM Released
It won't. Amazon kind of when that angle with MistralLite[1] (a 7B finetune), and it was barely passing in terms of being an effective summarizer. 0.5B are pretty much useless.

https://huggingface.co/amazon/MistralLite

ai_what··on Qwen2 LLM Released
I agree. I personally don't have high hopes for the 0.5B model.

Phi-2 was 2.7B and it was already regularly outputting complete nonsense.

I ran the 0.5B model of the previous Qwen version (1.5) and it reminded me of one of those lorum ipsum word generators.

The other new Qwen models (7B and up) look good though.

Care to explain why not? I can't think of anything he did besides post his position.
ai_what··on Spotify CEO: "cost of creating content is close to zero"
He likely knows better, so that makes me wonder why he would say this.
ai_what··on Homegrown Chinese CPUs are catching up to AMD and Intel
It looks like the gap is closer faster than what was expected.
ai_what··on Ask HN: Where do you keep your messy stack of Markdown notes?
I wanted to like Joplin but it's not very fast. It takes like 5 seconds just to start.

So now I use: https://github.com/nuttyartist/notes

ai_what··on AMD Instinct MI325X in Q4 2024, 288GB of HBM3E
I mean it's the price of 2 * Apple Mac Pro's. It isn't exactly unheard of.

Just a few weeks ago I spoke to someone who shelled out $10k for running LLM's locally. I've seen more expensive builds as well.

ai_what··on Seoul authorities find Shein products contain high levels of toxic chemicals
One of the problems here is that we're essentially chasing the tail on toxic chemicals.

When one chemical gets banned, it gets replaced by a slightly different form of the same chemical. When Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was banned due to its toxicity, it was replaced by other phthalate compounds like Di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) or Di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP).

We then spend years researching the next revision, only to find out it's toxic as well, leading to another ban or regulation and the cycle continuing.

Instead of maintaining a blacklist of banned chemicals, maybe we should have a whitelist of chemicals that are allowed to be imported/present in products. The situation is complex though because it's difficult to enforce.

ai_what··on Ask HN: Best way to save text from dynamically generated pages that won't curl?
You could write a userscript for this, or go a step further and write a small browser extension.

If you use Joplin, there's already a web to markdown plugin for browsers.

ai_what··on Linux May Be the Best Way to Avoid the AI Nightmare
I like toying around with local AI models. I do so a lot actually. But the AI gold rush is starting to leave a sour taste in my mouth.

It's astonishing how quickly this technology went from "new" to being used by profiteers trying to milk it for every last dollar. I can't even remember how many new projects/websites I come across on a daily basis, which are mostly just a wrapper for ChatGPT with custom prompt. Not to mention what the bigger companies are doing, as stated in OP's article.

The irony is that even the "Wild West" of cryptocurrency (I know) had a brief, innocent era where enthusiasts drove innovation for the sake of innovation, not just profit. That guy that bought pizza with bitcoin for example, it was fun and kinda cool.

AI however, went from something most people had never heard of to full-speed exploitation. It's as if greed just keeps getting worse in this world. Everything is a potential source of income now. Apologies for the rant...

ai_what··on Let yourself be monitored: EU governments to agree on Chat Control
I think one of the problems is that they'll just ban the apps from the app stores if they don't comply. Including Matrix clients.

Tech savvy people might be able to compile/sideload/apk download (etc.) their way around it.

But it's very difficult to get friends that you're talking with to do the same, when they don't care or don't know how to.

So all your data will just be scanned on your friend's side.

ai_what··on Let yourself be monitored: EU governments to agree on Chat Control
The logic doesn't even make sense. "Save the children, except of course the politician's children".

ai_what··on Ask HN: How to prove we aren't the source of a noise complaint?
Maybe check for carbon monoxide poisoning, he could be hearing things that aren't there.

Other than that, remember that the burden of proof is on him. So don't go crazy over it yourself.
