alberth··on Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue
But Ads is still 73% of their company revenue when you factor in YouTube.

YouTube did ~$60B in revenue last year.

Is google cloud revenue curve really that smooth?

alberth··on Zombie stats: Where the numbers AI quotes come from
I know Perplexity isn't often talked about anymore but their design of every sentence needing to be able to be referenced back to an actual source (like an academic peer reviewed paper) seems like a super power for trust.
alberth··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
You're talking about the number of CPUs, I'm talking customer segments.

Up until today, Apple's positioning was:

* Consumer = Air (light workloads, no pro use cases like video where you need best display)

* Professional = Pro (heavy workloads, need best display for color correctness)

After today, it's what exactly? Is it:

* Consumer = Air

* Business = Pro ???

* Professional = Pro with PROLED XDR

alberth··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I don’t understand Apple’s market positioning here.

Apple has always positioned the Pro as having the best display in a laptop. Now that’s no longer true.

Are we really moving to 3 tier of laptop displays: Air, Pro, and Pro with ProLED XDR?

That seems unnecessarily confusing for consumers.

“Pro” used to mean you were getting Apple’s best hardware, designed for "professionals".

Now “Pro” doesn't mean that anymore.

2019, 13" MacBook only weighed 3.02 lbs

https://support.apple.com/en-us/111945

EDIT:

Yes, 13" ≈ 14"

The form factor of this new 14" PROLED and the old 2019 13" is nearly the same (due to smaller bezels)

  PROLED: 0.59" x 12.24" x 8.5"
  2019: 0.59" x 11.97" x 8.36"

I thought Apple "Pro & Tell" day is tomorrow.

Makes me now wonder what's in store for tomorrow's pro launch.

alberth··on Diamond Transistor
I guess I just think of "synthetic grass", like AstroTurf and associate "synthetic" with non-real.
alberth··on Diamond Transistor
Is “synthetic” the right word?

I thought they are “lab grown”.

(Synthetic implies non-real, when at a molecular level the lab grown are 100% real)

alberth··on Anthropic S-1
That's no longer the case though anymore according to the S-1.

  2025: $0.50 revenue per $1.00 of compute
  2026: $1.82 revenue per $1.00 of compute
alberth··on Anthropic S-1
Valuations are a function of growth rate.

Anthropic growth rate is truly unprecedented at it's scale.

They are 10x revenue YoY.

  2024: ~$0.4B
  2025: ~$4.0B
  2026: ~$100.0B
Note: I'm not justifying it, just explaining how the markets are rationalizing it.

alberth··on NBA announces partnership with prediction markets Kalshi, Polymarket
What does "partnership" even mean in this context?

Does it just mean that the NBA will accept sponsorship money from these sites and how does that even work, since typically sponsorships want exclusivity?

alberth··on Diamond Transistor
Isn't the power consumption needed to create pure/no-blemish lab diamonds so great, that this wouldn't be feasible to scale.

alberth··on New iPad mini
The outer dimensions are largely the same, it's mostly a reducing the bezel size to increase the display size.

I think there is a parallel between engineering systems (specialized) and commodity cloud hardware (general purpose).

While no doubt, you can get better performance using a specialized hardware … there becomes a breaking point when the commodity / general purpose is good enough while allowing you lots more flexibility as well as typically being cheaper that is become hard to justify the specialized solution.

alberth··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
> The streaming era has proven an extremely difficult transition, with traditional films and TV shows losing watch time to user-generated and increasingly AI-assisted or AI-generated content flows.

Isn’t this the wrong conclusion.

It’s that streaming as the monetization vehicle no longer creates an opportunity for movie maker to make huge returns.

Once, a blockbuster movie could make $1 billions.

Today, the movie maker only gets a sliver of the $12/mo subscription fee.

alberth··on OpenBSD 8.0 release will have inteldrm/radeondrm/amdgpu drivers from Linux 6.18
Note that OpenBSD is on 7.9 now and all releases are possible breaking changes.

They release every six month and increment by 0.1. And after 0.9 they rollover to the next whole number.

So don’t think of version “8.0” as a major release per se, since OpenBSD is a fixed schedule release - not a Major.Minor release.
