MS Teams? Basically a bloated version of Skype.
alfnor··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
CurseForge (Overwolf?) tried with Curse Voice before Discord even existed, but it never made it big. Probably because Discord started taking over when Skype fell off (i.e. Discord had good timing, Curse Voice did not).

The private servers I'm in always have a few people screen sharing whenever a voice chat is active. They're either sharing their gameplay (semi-privately, hence no Twitch) or they're co-watching movies. Oh and every so often, screen sharing is used for getting someone's opinion on image editing or a song in they're making. I've also given people remote tech support which is way easier to do when their screen is visible.

But it's worth noting that as an older Gen Z, this is just how people hang out nowadays, so we'll be watching anime together in the server until we fall asleep or whatever. That's why screen sharing isn't as useful as screenshots and video clips.

alfnor··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
You think feds won't pay for bot accounts? Record labels already pay for botted streams, so I'm pretty sure MOSSAD would pay to bot Facebook. Hell, it already happens on X.
alfnor··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
You're right. We get cheap knicknacks instead of cheap housing, electricity, water, food, etc.
alfnor··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
Yet all they offer are ghost jobs at worst and hourly/gig work at best?
alfnor··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
But isn't it more profitable to replace a high-cost job like a data analyst or logistics expert than 10-20 low-cost jobs like warehouse workers? Like the cost of the machines and the maintenance probably will end up costing more than humans.

alfnor··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
And same counter-argument: those who are more likely to abuse tools are less likely to care about the legal status of said tool (they will illegally import or DIY the tools).
alfnor··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
You mean like how fentanyl is a banned substance so nobody sell- oh wait...

alfnor··on Writing documentation for your house
I would set up a wiki but also make regular printed backups: on-site for when the electricity is out, and off-site in case of fire.
alfnor··on How I got here
It isn't the worst deal because you don't have to worry about paying rent, so you can just focus 100% on getting good at whatever skillset you choose to pursue.
alfnor··on How I got here
Unfortunately, some parents believe in "tough love" (throw them into the ocean to learn them to swim).
alfnor··on Portugal. The Man – Official Website Is a Google Sheets Document
Since it loads everything at once, navigation is very snappy, which I really like. I'd rather let the whole thing load once than wait every time I click an internal link.
alfnor··on Spotify looked to ban white noise podcasts to become more profitable
Is nobody here familiar with the notorious problem that is stream-farming? People will upload white noise to Spotify and use phone farms (no idea why VMs [potentially behind VPNs] with [prepaid] Spotify accounts wouldn't work) to scam Spotify out of thousands of dollars every month.

I think every new artist account has a limit of 3000 daily streams per track before they get flagged for botting. The solution is to upload loads of shorts tracks to every artist account, since Spotify only takes streaming numbers into account, and not playtime.

This also has hidden costs for Spotify, such as the unnecessary bandwidth and storage required for all this audio no human even listens to.

alfnor··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
Historically, most males never got to reproduce.

https://psmag.com/environment/17-to-1-reproductive-success

As soon as you remove our self-imposed social rules, we revert to our natural instincts, where a few males copulate, but rarely bond, with the majority of females. This leads to unhappy bonds where some of the less desirable males take care of females and offspring that is not theirs, while the rest of the males just get angry at the world and start fighting. A great way to build an army (e.g. Daesh) is to promise angry young involuntarily celibate males a bunch of virgins. You can also use their dissatisfaction to make a bunch of money, with the promise that they are becoming more desirable as they consoom more product (see Andrew Tate).

> We predict that imposing monogamous marriage reduces male reproductive competition and suppresses intra-sexual competition, which shrinks the size of the pool of low-status, risk-oriented, unmarried men. These effects result in (i) lower rates of crime, personal abuse, intra-household conflict and fertility, and (ii) greater parental investment (especially male), economic productivity (gross domestic product (GDP) per capita) and female equality.

alfnor··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it (2021)
> For women marrying since the start of the new millennium:

> Women with 10 or more partners were the most likely to divorce, but this only became true in recent years;

> Women with 3-9 partners were less likely to divorce than women with 2 partners; and,

> Women with 0-1 partners were the least likely to divorce.

https://ifstudies.org/blog/counterintuitive-trends-in-the-li...

> In our sample, only 23 percent of the individuals who got married over the course of the study had had sex solely with the person they married. That minority of men and women reported higher marital quality than those who had had sex with other partners prior to marriage. We further found that the more sexual partners a woman had had before marriage, the less happy she reported her marriage to be. This association was not statistically significant for men.

https://before-i-do.org/

> We investigated sex differences in shoulder to hip ratios (SHR) and waist to hip ratios (WHR), and their relationships to different features of sexual behavior. Males with high SHR and females with low WHR reported sexual intercourse at an earlier age, more sexual partners, more extra-pair copulations (EPC), and having engaged in more instances of intercourse with people who were involved in another relationship (i.e., having themselves been EPC partners). The predictive value of these morphological features was highly sex-specific.

> Past sexual promiscuity and sexual fantasies (Predictions 10 and 11). In both contexts, a partner’s concealed past sexual promiscuity (promiscuity) was rated as one of the more upsetting forms of deception (about 1 SD above the overall mean). Ratings did not differ by sex (ps > .05), failing to support Prediction 10. Prediction 11 was supported in the long term, with men’s ratings of a partner’s concealed sexual fantasies about others (sexual fantasy) relatively higher than women’s. There was no significant sex difference in the short term (p > .05). These results mirror those observed for sexual infidelity and flirtation and further suggest that the risk of cuckoldry constitutes a potent form of strategic interference for men in the long-term mating context.

alfnor··on Ancient Greek terms worth reviving
And a similar word:

"In Ancient Greek philosophy, ataraxia (Greek: ἀταραξία, from "a-", negation and tarachē "disturbance, trouble") is a lucid state of robust equanimity characterized by ongoing freedom from distress and worry. In non-philosophical usage, ataraxia was the ideal mental state for soldiers entering battle. Achieving ataraxia is a common goal for Pyrrhonism, Epicureanism, and Stoicism, but the role and value of ataraxia within each philosophy varies in accordance with their philosophical theories."

Few medical doctors seem to grasp statistics. They solely consider trends, so it sucks to be a patient who is an outlier. Especially considering lifestyle factors and genetics aren't always properly controlled for in studies.

Just look at how something like different dosages of alcohol affects different populations!

I personally have a high BMI and high creatinine levels. No, I'm not obese with messed up kidneys (which the doctors thought); I just lift a lot and supplement with creatine.

Of course, doctors tend to be overworked, so I don't doubt they would be able to think clearly if they worked normal shifts and got adequate rest.

What a coincidence! I'm in my first year of civil engineering taking a MATLAB course right now. I do have some previous coding experience, though. For me, it's all the math stuff that drives me insane.
