allbutlost··on We’re Fucked, It’s Over: Coming Back from the Brink
(In Chrome) If you right-click anywhere on the text and select "inspect element" it will select the #comments div because it covers the whole page. Then on the right-hand side of the dev tools you can add to "element.style". Adding clear:both; to this fixes the issue.
allbutlost··on The Echo Nest Joins Spotify
"The Echo Nest API will remain free and open to support its robust developer ecosystem."

allbutlost··on Docker at Spotify
This is addressed in the talk. It's a short talk, so may be worth listening to it to see how it was used.
allbutlost··on Spotify and Facebook: Is that phishing?
Spotify aren't "logging into the users account" as suggested, the user is signing in with their fb details and by adding an app to their account fb reactivates their account. The issue here is only one of poor communication, not of illegal account access. Saying otherwise is disingenuous.
allbutlost··on Spotify and Facebook: Is that phishing?
No, it's not.
allbutlost··on Why is Spotify chugging upload bandwidth when it is not streaming?
It doesn't
allbutlost··on Why is Spotify chugging upload bandwidth when it is not streaming?
The android client doesn't use p2p.
allbutlost··on Why is Spotify chugging upload bandwidth when it is not streaming?
Indeed, the web player isn't U.S. only, just that the beta testing currently concentrates on new users from the U.S. It is however possible to gain access - there are many guides online on how to do so.
allbutlost··on Why is Spotify chugging upload bandwidth when it is not streaming?
No, I'm pretty sure they don't.

allbutlost··on Spotify launches iPad app
Airplay should indeed be available for you in the iPad app - see http://www.spotify.com/us/about/spotify-on-ipad/
allbutlost··on Spotify launches iPad app
The new app is a universal binary which also includes iPhone updates, so it might be worth downloading the update and seeing if it fixes any of your issues.
allbutlost··on Spotify launches iPad app
It's a known issue and is being worked on, last I heard.

Will apparently take centuries to crack. I see the reasoning, but can this be correct?
allbutlost··on PayPal Goes In-Store
I would argue that this reputation only really applies within the tech echo chamber and that the vast majority of wider society isn't aware of this reputation, and has never heard of Square.

But these same people probably do have a PayPal account, and given that these onerous policies of PayPals are actually in place to protect the consumer I think they stand a good chance making it much more difficult for Square in this market.

allbutlost··on Going Simple with JavaScript
It seems all dreamhost sites are currently down, including snook.ca. Here's the cached version -> http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://...
allbutlost··on Javascript libraries for animation in HTML5
You're right that a framework that should provide mobile compatible animations should have a website that is itself mobile-friendly.

However the page itself doesn't seem to use any of the frameworks it is promoting, and doesn't seem to do a lot of demonstrating as of yet. The full site is apparently coming soon though...

allbutlost··on It’s Official: Samsung Has a 10.1 Inch Galaxy Note
Seems to be either bad handwriting or a very bad font. Notice the same on "magazine", and "Sam" looks like "Samn".
allbutlost··on Python for iOS
Presumably because the author of the app feels like it would be nice to be compensated for the work involved in creating it.
allbutlost··on YSlow is now open source
Im guessing it's both because of homophones in general and the fact that yslow is a deliberate play on this - "why is this page slow?"
allbutlost··on [dead]
I think this is a few years old, but a few previous posts have some interesting discussion

allbutlost··on Firefox's enterprise support version has now been released
A marked change of stance from the following?

"Mike, you do realize that we get about 2 million Firefox downloads per day from regular user types, right? Your “big numbers” here are really just a drop in the bucket, fractions of fractions of a percent of our user base.

Enterprise has never been (and I’ll argue, shouldn’t be) a focus of ours. Until we run out of people who don’t have sysadmins and enterprise deployment teams looking out for them, I can’t imagine why we’d focus at all on the kinds of environments you care so much about."

allbutlost··on Ask HN: Better 1st person (My Photos) or 2nd (Your Photos)?
A good discussion arose on this question a while back - it might be worth checking out http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1714184 and the original article that spawned the discussion -> http://weblog.muledesign.com/2010/06/unsuck_it_special_byeby...

I tend to prefer using the 2nd person, if I have to choose one over the other.

[edit] - Sorry, should also add the link to the Yahoo patterns article, which also recommends the 2nd person http://developer.yahoo.com/ypatterns/social/core/yourvmy.htm....

allbutlost··on Show HN: Entire concerts algorithmically "reconstructed" from YouTube videos
This is unfortunately so unlikely to as to be practically impossible (currently!).

If the microphones, ADCs etc on both phones are incapable of capturing frequencies of above e.g. 15Khz below a certain range, combining those signals definitely won't bring you any closer to the original signal. You may be able to cancel out a fair bit of noise given enough processing but you won't get back what hasn't been originally captured by either device.

That's before you get into phase problems from trying to combine two signals. A likely outcome is that the amplitude of some signals are increased whilst some are decreased due to phasing issues.

/fuzzily remembered music tech degree. May be too fuzzy though!

allbutlost··on This Is Why Your Website Is Slow
AddThis, ShareThis etc are also popular culprits here.

I'm sure that this is choir-preaching at its finest, but using the non-async AddThis plugin should be avoided at all costs.

Strange. This post was submitted, reached the top and then deleted a couple of hours ago - I'm not sure if it was deleted by the submitter or not.
