analogmemory··on Show HN: Mimicking the Bloomberg menu widget without JavaScript
Yeah I've had to build a similar menu, it's simple solution but makes a huge usability difference.
analogmemory··on Show HN: Mimicking the Bloomberg menu widget without JavaScript
Great job mimicking the menu with just pure CSS! You even got the fade/slide down effect mostly there.

From a UX perspective there's a reason they used Javascript. For example, if you hover over "Politics" and want to click on "2018 Women Candidates" naturally you move your mouse at an angle. Which causes you to lose the menu when it mouses over "Technology". This is solved by tracking the mouse movement and holding the current menu open if the movement is at a specific angle

I'd like to read your write up if you do it :)

analogmemory··on Why nobody ever wins the car at the mall
My dad signed up for one of those sweepstakes back in the '90s. They called and said he won a "prize" but he had to come into view a "presentation". Went to the "presentation" where they tried to hustle him to signup for a timeshare. He resisted and they gave him the "prize", which was a knockoff boombox.

That boombox is still alive, my mom uses it in the garage when she's doing gardening. I'm pretty sure the company that gave it to us is long gone. Life finds a way?

analogmemory··on Firefox is back. It's time to give it a try
I'm guessing you didn't signup for a Firefox account to save the sync the bookmarks?

Do you not have any backup services running?

Maybe they stole the plans to make speakers that crap out after a year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
analogmemory··on How to GraphQL – A Fullstack Tutorial for GraphQL
This looks awesome. I've been wanting to get a good understanding of how to use GraphQL.
analogmemory··on The last known unidentified marking on the Saturn V S-IC
Hah! Last week I was doing some research on a typeface I had found. I was getting visibly excited while looking at my screen. My partner looks up and asks what's got me worked up. I spent about 30 seconds explaining what I found and why I was nerd happy. The response? Cool [https://bit.ly/2sHXrH8]. Goes back to the book.
analogmemory··on Unfortunately, the Electric Scooters Are Fantastic
It's $2 for the first 30 minutes and then charged at a per minute rate (varies per city) after that. $0.07 per min in SF.

The Ford GoBike which I think it the same program as the CitiBike is rolling out electric assist bikes now too which I believe is $3 for a 30 min ride for the electric. $2 for normal

analogmemory··on Unfortunately, the Electric Scooters Are Fantastic
I took 3 scooters rides on a 3 miles ride to work and it roughly cost me $4 and took ~22 minutes

I've taken the Jump bike several times and it usually takes just under 15 min to go the same route for only $2

Faster and cheaper wins! :)

analogmemory··on Unfortunately, the Electric Scooters Are Fantastic
> I see a bike on the street once in a blue moon

What? There is a huge population of cyclists out there. Do you live on top of a hill?

analogmemory··on Unfortunately, the Electric Scooters Are Fantastic
I've ridden the electric scooters a few times and while I understand the joy the author found I disliked them compared to other options.

I honestly think the electric bikes (Jump/GoBikes) that are coming out are better options. For one you can go faster and further for cheaper than the scooters.

Also the safety issues, I felt much more unstable on the scooter than anything else. I almost ate it when i rolled over a small pothole.

analogmemory··on Getting 1Password 7 ready for the Mac App Store
The family plan is honestly the best feature hands down. I setup my partner and my mom in it. There was some resistance at first to learning a "new thing". But now they love that they only have to remember one secure password and all their other passwords are automatically generated for them. No more pet names as passwords!
analogmemory··on People Loved MoviePass Nearly to Death
I think it was just the editor trying to create a strawman. The only objection I saw was an AMC exec saying their pricing model is flawed. That's not really hating it's existence.

analogmemory··on 'My £1,000 Macbook Air was stolen at airport security and no one cares'
This has always worried me. Once you're through the scanner you're free to loiter at the end of the conveyor belt. No one will bother you and I doubt TSA will blink an eye if you were to grab something and put it in your bag.

analogmemory··on Electric scooter “mayhem” sounds like when cars were introduced
My only problem with scooters is the assholes who ride on the sidewalk and then run into you.

I could care less if they want to ride in the street without a helmet. Good luck with that.

analogmemory··on Giving Up on the Current MacBook Pro Keyboard
I've only had problems when I eat food and use my laptop. Some crumbs get under a key and then prevents it from traveling. Usually i get some canned air and try to blow it out. I could see it being a bigger problem for other in places that are extra dusty

Not everyone has an engineer mentality. There’s a reason it’s become a meme, some people get honestly stumped by the instructions. Lack tables are easy and so are chairs. I’ve bought some of their larger and more complicated items and would often stare at the instructions cursing.
