andrem··on Tracking when Trump chickens out
It's Claude Design. How do I know? A site I was working on has the same aesthetic... Which is disappointing but not unexpected.
andrem··on One Developer, Two Dozen Agents, Zero Alignment
It is just a product pitch with beta access (I don't have access to it) But also agree that the direction is good. I think once everyone using the 12 terminal agent setup emerges from the void, teamwork processes will need to have a rethink. So it's interesting to follow this and other projects. What is yours?

andrem··on Loss of smell may be an early sign of brain diseases
Not being able to smell sucks. I was able to smell for the first 20+ years of my life and then lost it.

After years of going to doctors getting treated for polyps and allergies and all kinds of things I was diagnosed with Samter's Triad.

I know you have this since birth and it most likely is not what you have, but other people with similar symptoms may want to look into that, because not many doctors that I came across knew this.

andrem··on Do judges give out tougher sentences when hungry? A study too good to be true
Do you suffer from allergies/chronic rhinitis by any chance? I have hyposmia because of rhinitis.

But I get the same - go without food for a while and my sense of smell increases until I eat and become satiated.

Now whether it’s related to certain allergens that I eat or the body/senses becoming less sharp I do not know.

Probably worth investigating a bit more, I never really dug deeper into this.

andrem··on An anonymous donor just sent 299 Ether (equivalent to 393k USD) to redox_OS
If you trace back the addresses, you get to this:

https://etherscan.io/address/0x6365abaad54863bfd11acb6c4b611...

Which in turn shows it came from Tornado Cash which was put on the OFAC blacklist in August. So redox will likely have a very hard time to get this converted.

You can bypass that with running a local instance of davmail - https://github.com/mguessan/davmail

It works really well if you are comfortable on the command line to get it running.

Does anyone know of EU based alternatives to the above?
andrem··on Zas Editor
The payment process is a little tricky - it doesn't ask you for an email address and displays the license on the resulting page. If I don't record the license key manually I will need to get in touch with you to try and recover it.

It would be better to get it emailed or get some prompt to record it etc.

andrem··on Brain implant translates paralyzed man's thoughts into text with 94% accuracy
Well here is one other random sample who has to turn the inner voice on when necessary :)

Instead of a voice I have a constant song playing in my head when I am not focused. The song changes multiple times per week but if I am on idle I have a song.

When I speak the song turns off, but no voice comes on, unless I consciously prepare my words.

Now when typing this comment, I have a voice (which is my own voice) say the words I am about to type milliseconds before I type them.

andrem··on The Itanic Has Sunk
Totally agree with this. External consultants are easily blamed. But the problem usually lies elsewhere - someone makes a decision without understanding the full scope of the challenge.
andrem··on The Itanic Has Sunk
Little anecdote:

The Itanium led to one of a more remarkable episodes in my career. Around 2007 we were running a heavy workload on MS SQL Server in a fast growing business.

We faced a lot of outages due to DB overload. Instead of trying to investigate and understand the issue better and optimize the software, some external consultants were brought in and recommended to upgrade the hardware to an Itanium based monster. It was a massive piece of hardware with a price tag close to 7 figures.

The thing went live and performance decreased and issues increased. After a couple of weeks of trying to run on the Itanium we switched back to the old setup and then focused on software improvements.

Long story short - after about 8 weeks of dedicated troubleshooting and improvements the whole app became stable, was capable to double workload on the same hardware without outages for the next 12 months.

The Itanium took up a lot of space in the server room before it was dismantled and used as a paperweight. A lawsuit involving multiple parties (supplier, consultant, business) eventually got settled out of court in 2015 (?) long after I left there.

Farewell Itanium :)

andrem··on Show HN: Hackable No-Code Tool for MVPs
Hello, nice looking product and great copy. 2 points:

1. Make your screenshots english too, keeping the code structure and copy consistent. Unless you want to highlight i18n. But seeing Portuguese and English mixed sticks out to someone like me with a mildly severe case of OCD.

2. Can you mention the language I can use to hack or export the source code in? I assume it’s javascript but spelling it out at least once on the frontpage seems appropriate.

Good luck with it!

andrem··on Ask HN: How to find work while homeless?
I cannot promise anything but I’m in the Utrecht area and would be more than happy to give you some advice face to face or potentially help you somehow with projects if there is a fit.

Do you have an email address to reach you?

andrem··on Ask HN: Favorite note-taking software?
I am using an Apple Pencil. Not sure if 3rd party pencils work.
andrem··on Ask HN: Favorite note-taking software?
Second the notion of goodnotes and the pen. The one feature that really is quite significant is being able to move hand written text around using the lasso tool.

So you write something, circle it and move it to the right spot.

If your brain works in chaotic ways at times it is such a cool feature to just write/dump everything and then order it later.

Also excellent for drawing diagrams and mockups and all kinds of other flows that require expansion or significant change later on.

Using the pen/ipad combo feels quite natural to write so this has been my solution for a while and has stuck more than any solution I have tried over the past 20 years aside from regular pen/paper.

andrem··on Show HN: Munt – The simplest way to accept cryptocurrencies
I signed up for an account and have some feedback:

* The signup was very easy

* 2FA is missing, considering withdrawals will be made through the account if automatic withdrawals are not enabled, that is an absolute must have.

* Clicking on "Upgrade your Plan" takes me back to the logged out site even though I remain logged in

* I uploaded a logo and I am not sure what it is used for, it's not displayed anywhere.

* I signed up in particular because I saw Woocommerce on the front page. Post login there is no mention of it, and I am not sure there is actually a plugin for it.

Keep working at it guys - it's a good segment to be in.

andrem··on Show HN: Munt – The simplest way to accept cryptocurrencies
Great - it is good to see competition to GoURL. The Woocommerce integration in particular is great to see. GoURL's woocommerce plugin is functional but the experience is not the greatest.

Good luck with it - I will potentially switch one of my products over to this on a trial basis.

andrem··on Google Cloud Armor
Just to clarify - Cloudflare have POPs behind the great firewall of china in cooperation with Baidu. That is not to say Cloudflare routed sites are all accessible through CF, but it's certainly not a blanket statement either way.

Not sure if this would work better.

andrem··on Dr Bronwyn Tarr: How to live a happy life
Ah yes. The one stop shop to a happy life.

We are quite a finnicky species and trying to shoehorn everyone into the same mold is probably not a recipe for great happiness.

Just accept that people are different, you won't find happiness following someone else's rulebook and do the things that matter to you. Accept those things as your source of happiness.

If your sources of happiness are not compatible with society in general do them where you can enjoy them on your own or with a group of likeminded peers.

Do not be concerned about how unique you are. Embrace it.

If you are not unique embrace that too.

Focus on what it is that you really want to do.

Life will be over soon enough.

Stop chasing your happiness and live life. Happiness will follow :)

andrem··on How to protect your cryptocurrency: An in-depth guide
You can do your own:

https://github.com/MyEtherWallet/MyEtherWallet or https://github.com/MichaelMure/WalletGenerator.net

Recently there has been an influx of scam attacks using forged myetherwallet URLs in all the altcoin slack channels. Using your own is really the better way to go about this.

The article mentions ways to run both solutions offline but going to the source is probably the safest way.

Are there jobs like this out there that you can do for months at a time without being too skilled?

He was manning the Antarctic station - that sounds like it involves routine work that anyone can do (absolutely no offense), are there jobmarkets out there for these sort of gigs?

Just curious really.

andrem··on Certificate Revocation Issue
That is a good point. I guess the move to Let's Encrypt is a change in mindset completely. Away from Marketing snake-oil to a simple solution to a technical issue.

EV certificates do not add additional security as far as I am aware, it's simply a measure of extended validation of the customer, which in my experience is only fluff.

So going with Let's Encrypt may as well do the full cycle and sell this free solution to non-technical people who believe EV provides additional value.

Hard sell... I know.

andrem··on Certificate Revocation Issue
Interesting - 3.3 seems to be applicable here:

"3.3 Intentional or accidental errors This Warranty Policy warrants against intentional or accidental errors introduced into a Certificate by any personnel of a GlobalSign RA or a GlobalSign LRA due to failure to use reasonable care as required under the CPS."

Not a lawyer, but will push this with our legal team for sure.

This could destroy GlobalSign, so there must be a clause to exempt them from liability ... ah, here it is:

"8.1 Total amount for warranty exhausted When the maximum limit allocated for warranty payments is exhausted, GlobalSign shall have no further obligation to refund any Beneficiary, unless required otherwise by applicable law."

andrem··on Certificate Revocation Issue
The handling of this has been quite terrible. The article is the first "good" communication about an event that started 7 hours prior. And according to the communication will take another 4 days to solve completely.

Before this, the Technical Solutions Director tweeted solutions that did not work for end users, but highlighted a typical IT centric approach to problem resolution ("Works, What's the problem?") [1]

For anyone not already aware, check out Let's Encrypt. I am evaluating it for about 200 domains now in earnest after having it on my horizon for some time. At least to have it ready as a fallback. [2]

Getting 200 EV certificates in a hurry from a different CA has been costly this morning.
