andrewnicolalde··on School absences have ‘exploded’ almost everywhere
That makes a lot of sense, and I think it’s something that would have helped me during high school.
andrewnicolalde··on You can't leak users' data if you don't hold it
Perhaps it means that a change to the policy can’t be used to justify actions taken that would have broken a prior version of the policy but which don’t violate the new one. Granted, I don’t have a complete understanding of the legal enforceability of a company’s privacy policy.
andrewnicolalde··on Porn sites are banning Texas
They do, currently!
andrewnicolalde··on Google Jamboard is winding down
I really hope this doesn’t happen. The relative simplicity and reliability of Google docs in my experience has always been one of its major advantages over Microsoft Office, not to mention its near seamless real time collaboration functionality.
andrewnicolalde··on The Home Assistant Green is here
Which tailscale plug-in are you using? The official one seems to only support automation and getting some tailnet metrics and does not connect your Home Assistant machine to your tailnet.

andrewnicolalde··on CatalaLang/catala: Programming language for law specification
Why unfortunate? Also, I love your username. I think many of us could have guessed that you spoke Catalan from that alone ;).
andrewnicolalde··on Two-thirds of North America at risk of energy shortages during extreme demand [pdf]
If that were feasible and comparably efficient (which I doubt), then yes, I imagine they ought to!
andrewnicolalde··on New superbug-killing antibiotic discovered using AI
I suspect they were being sarcastic.
andrewnicolalde··on I was banned because of a security flaw in Facebook’s password recovery system
The United States has https://login.gov/
andrewnicolalde··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
What are some examples of things which you would forget about?
andrewnicolalde··on Canada buys 88 F-35 fighter jets for $14.2B
Any kind of stealthiness for one. There are versions of the F-15 which attempt to be more stealthy than the base airframe, but it’s a far cry from being as stealthy as any purpose-built aircraft.
andrewnicolalde··on Apple kills plans to scan for CSAM in iCloud
Presumably yes, for both of the same reasons, or at least the first one.
andrewnicolalde··on Fake HN titles generated by GPT-3
Apparently it’s not even the most realistic it could be! From the footer:

> We used Ada because titles generated by the larger Curie model are barely distinguishable from the real thing, despite being original.

andrewnicolalde··on Ask HN: Is This Typical Procrastination?
This sounds like ADD to me.
andrewnicolalde··on After price update, Amazon Prime members call Amazon Music “unusable”
Did Amazon actually drop this? I haven’t used prime in a very long time but this was pretty much the only reason I bothered.
andrewnicolalde··on Cybersecurity in 1989: Looking back at “The Cuckoo's Egg” (2015)
While it’s no longer mandatory, I can assure you RoHo infosec students still read this book, as I did :).
andrewnicolalde··on We are unable to refund mistaken purchases, and/or if you don't like the game
Sounds like you lost nothing of value.
andrewnicolalde··on Rare ‘triple’ La Niña climate event looks likely
I’d say “el chico” translates more to “the lad”, but perhaps this is a matter of regional dialects.
andrewnicolalde··on AirPlay and Touch Bar = Network Disaster
> Apple's only real mistake was not keeping ESC a fixed hard key.

They’ve added that back for a few years now, but I agree. I used to own one of the 2016 MBPs with a Touch Bar and the lack of a physical escape key drove me insane. Even though I sold that laptop, I had actual while-asleep nightmares about the horrifically bad keyboard for a while too.

andrewnicolalde··on Apple announces new flagship M2 processor
If you’re referring to those pieces of software having support for Apple silicon, Docker already does (even without Rosetta installed) and I have yet to encounter a package on homebrew that isn’t natively built for ARM.
andrewnicolalde··on Google has banned the training of deepfakes in Colab
What about Europe?
andrewnicolalde··on Why are some egg yolks so orange?
Yes well I'm actually American :P
andrewnicolalde··on Why are some egg yolks so orange?
Yes! I completely agree. The yolks of Clarence Court-alikes just don’t feel as “rich”, whatever that means, and I can readily tell the difference when having yolk-heavy food like egg soldiers, for example.
andrewnicolalde··on Finland and Sweden set to join NATO as soon as summer
> Russia themselves asked to join but were rejected.

https://euobserver.com/news/27890

“‘Great powers don't join coalitions, they create coalitions. Russia considers itself a great power’, the Russian ambassador stressed."

andrewnicolalde··on Microsoft accidentally reveals that it is testing ads in Windows Explorer
Windows is malware.
andrewnicolalde··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Good on you, Namecheap. You’ve earned my continued business and genuine respect with this action.
andrewnicolalde··on 25 Gbit/s internet as a normal customer
What about things like my AppleTV? I’d probably run both
andrewnicolalde··on Why is LinkedIn so cringe?
I cannot stop laughing! Was the standup even about stuff developers would care about, or did they force you to listen to entirely unrelated financial status updates?
andrewnicolalde··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
What form did the help take?
andrewnicolalde··on The curious case of the Raspberry Pi in the network closet (2019)
There are also options like the Zymkey[1] which is essentially an add-on TPM which can auto-decrypt the disk if it detects that the Raspberry Pi and SD card it is connected to have not changed. Not sure how difficult that would really be to defeat given enough effort though.
