androidb··on WPHunt – The most popular WordPress news and products, every day
This looks cool, is it your own project? I've released a while back a similar project [1], and I'd be interested in knowing the technical side of the project (platform, ...).

The main problem will be creating an engaged community, since at least in my case, lots of users come in, do an action once and then they forget about the site until the next time they have something else to share.

androidb··on Vegetable Spawns Larceny and Luxury in Peru
Good, maybe this way the ivory hunt will stop, now that they have a new aphrodisiac to take its place (maca).
androidb··on Uber CEO Promises Change in India After Driver Is Arrested for Rape
Uber has been banned* in New Delhi because they were "misleading customers". Uber said its service is safe for women but without laying the ground base for that, they only rely on summary checks (undergone the commercial licensing process, hold government issued IDs, state-issued permits, and carry full commercial insurance) instead of thorough background checks. That's why a previously convicted sex offender became an Uber driver.

To me it's a case of false advertising and they will support some consequences.

androidb··on NASA: We're sending humans to Mars
In all honesty, I saw an #Onion tag at the end of the tweet and I thought it's a story made by the onion - had to read twice to see it's Orion, though it has more credibility with my first interpretation.
androidb··on “Invalid username or password” is a useless security measure
I agree with the article, furthermore here's another interesting reading from Mailchimp, as they reduced their failed logins by 70% telling users if the username or password was wrong: https://blog.mailchimp.com/social-login-buttons-arent-worth-...
androidb··on How Magic Leap Is Creating an Alternate Reality
Can't believe anyone here didn't mention this but I'll be the immature one. Imagine porn on this device. I mean just, you know, all the Scarletts and Jessicas.
androidb··on Show HN: Projects from “Stupid Shit No One Needs and Terrible Ideas” Hackathon
DO NOT click to watch the drone delivery video. Trust me.
androidb··on Show HN: Lightweight lossless file minifier/optimizer
But does it know how to compress 3D video files, because if not Nucleus is way better.

Joke aside, congrats on releasing this as open-source.

androidb··on MyTomorrows Raises €4.5M to Give Patients Access to Development-Stage Drugs
"We focus on disease areas with unmet needs; oncology, neurology, psychiatry and rare diseases." This is from their main site and is the key to your question. If I were to have only 3 months left to live using conventional medicine, I would most likely try a drug that could prolong my life expectancy. I see it as a service for terminal ill patients.
androidb··on Rosetta lined up for lander delivery
It's been a hell of a week for space enthusiasts (myself included) with the Antares crash and recent Virgin failure, so it feels extraordinary to hear that other projects are a success (or will be in 11 days).
androidb··on Dreadnought hoax
"During the visit to Dreadnought, the visitors had repeatedly shown amazement or appreciation by exclaiming "Bunga! Bunga!".[7] In 1915 during the First World War, HMS Dreadnought rammed and sank a German submarine—the only battleship ever to do so. Among the telegrams of congratulation was one that read "BUNGA BUNGA"."
androidb··on We Are All Confident Idiots
I'm not confident!
androidb··on Ad blocker that clicks on the ads
Bad idea, ads are also a way to support the site/service you are using. Automatic ad clicks can get that site banned (i.e. Adsense will surely do that) so that's a sure way to kill the site. Google for instance wouldn't have existed without ads. Lots of people on HN saved millennia with help from Stackoverflow (ad supported) and so on.

I'm now "ad-aware" so I know how to differentiate content from ads, but I will click on an ad if it's something that's of interest to me. I support the publisher this way and also get some value out of it. I don't like sites filled with ads but my way of "punishing" those is to avoid visiting that site.

androidb··on The Ebola Wars
Very well written article, but does anyone else think that the cartoonish image advertisements don't really fit well with the purpose of the article?

The photo of an aid worker removing the body of a dead woman also looks surreal...

androidb··on Inspirograph
I don't know what I'm doing here but I like it and keep doing it.
androidb··on Anonabox has been suspended by Kickstarter
Their mistake was not to mention that the hardware isn't built entirely by them (mainboard is bought from China). However, I don't think it's fair (the backslash). They bundle the hardware with a software, they will handle the support, future updates so it's not like they are simply reselling a Chinese item. If this sounds outrageous to you then you should be outraged by 99% of the electronics items sold (because you can always buy them cheaper in China).

I'm not a supporter of this anonbox but I don't get all the outrage.

androidb··on Humble Mozilla Bundle
That's a great package, but what I don't get is why the "mozilla bundle" name if this works just as well on Chrome?
androidb··on iSIGHT discovers vulnerability used in Russian cyber-espionage campaign
Can't believe they designed a logo especially for this worm (and gave a fancy name). There's apparently a marketing campaign in vulnerability discoveries too.
androidb··on Devices being remotely wiped in police custody
This reminds me of a movie scene in Breaking Bad where they remotely "wiped" a laptop's content. Guess that's plausible now.
androidb··on How to double your app's downloads with keyword optimization
I'll look at that again and update it, thanks for the heads up. Maybe these were features you've added later, as I tested all those tools.
androidb··on How to double your app's downloads with keyword optimization
SensorTower is buggy and annoying, I much prefer AppAnnie & MobileDevHq. I compared[1] them a while back and ended up concluding that the free tiers of AppAnnie/MobileDevHQ are enough to do some basic ASO.

androidb··on Quantum gas goes below absolute zero
That's why I always read comments before following a link, thank you for sharing this :)
androidb··on Messages in the Deep – The Story of the Underwater Internet
To what purpose? As long as it is interest from a government/powerful institution to spy on something they will for sure develop a way to do so. Nothing is safe...
androidb··on Sex as Exercise
"Then the scientists sent the couples home, instructing them to complete at least one sex act a week for a month while wearing the armbands" - so weekly sex and being paid to do it, there should be more tests like these everywhere.
androidb··on Real Men Go to Sleep
Closed the page before reading the article for the fact that they popped up a modal advertisement window with a black background - ironic is that Adblock removed the ad content so it was a white box on a black background.
androidb··on Best Black Friday – Cyber Monday Special VPN Deals
for some reason I don't trust your site, the use of "best" is too scammy.
androidb··on Calgary man becomes world's most travelled
Sounds like a great adventure, too bad there aren't any photos in there. The only source I found was this http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/10/04/spencer-bown-worlds-... - the last video on page has some real photos with him during his travels, including the one in Somalia (mogadishu).
androidb··on How to Read a Scientific Paper (About a Scientist With a Worm in His Mouth)
Yes, this really is what the title says. Quote from the article after the scientist discovered the worm in his mouth: "Wow, this is really interesting,” thought Allen. And then 1) I hope it’s not fatal and 2) I hope it’s publishable"

Not your typical reaction... this is another article that also adds some imagery: http://www.wm.edu/research/ideation/notes-and-curiosities/ti...

androidb··on Ask HN to review: app to save files from web directly to your Dropbox
You also have one in 'No limits on size, and its free.' Should be "it's" in this situation not "its".
androidb··on Mailinator has a new design
My point too, the text is very unreadable. On the homepage they have the green background and white text with some effects, you barely can read it before your eyes start to hurt.
