angrycoder··on Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost
terrible advice, never tell someone who has depression or any other mental health issue to stop going to therapy.
angrycoder··on PICO-8 – Fantasy Console
It was called newgrounds.
angrycoder··on How Three Kids with No Experience Beat Square and Translated Final Fantasy V
To get an idea of how rom hacking works, check out this video from doublefine:

Its mostly setting watches and breakpoints in the emulator, not digging through code. My mind was blown the first time I watched it.

angrycoder··on How David Hume Helped Solve My Midlife Crisis
So you are only 'normal' when you want things? That is a really strange world view.
angrycoder··on Real Programmers Don't Use PASCAL (1982)
Was this written as satire back in 1982? Because it is great when read as satire.

As a real thing written by a real person, not so much.

So the rules of the site don't apply to you? I get that you are frustrated, but your tone makes people not care about the content of your message.

angrycoder··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (February 2015)
SEEKING WORK - Remote (PA, USA)

Web application developer with 10+ years experience, 5 as a freelancer. I've worked on everything from 911 dispatching systems to custom built CMSs to scheduling applications.

I primarly work with Angular.js, Bootstrap, & jQuery on the front end and C# on the backend - Asp.net (Web Forms, MVC, & Web API), LINQ, Entity Framework, & MS Sql Server. I've done iOS development using Monotouch/Xamarin for an interal customer & order mangement system used by a salesforce of 500 people. I get up to speed on new tech very quickly and have been known to dabble in python, cobol, perl, and node.js.

I can code your brand new project on my own as a full stack developer or agument your existing team. If you are a small business who lacks a full time development staff, I can add new features or do maintenance on your existing applications.

Just curious, why does the word kata turn you off because you are female?

As someone who has studied martial arts for five years, there have been plenty of female students and the vast majority of the people I study with are well into their 30s.

angrycoder··on Hoplon: A Simpler Way to Program the Web

angrycoder··on AngularJS 1.2.0: timely-delivery
Great timing. The angular based project I've been working on for the past 6 months just had a soft launch the other day. Being able to tell the powers that be that we are no longer on the unstable branch will ease a few minds.
angrycoder··on Dear Startups: stop asking me math puzzles to figure out if I can code
Exactly. "Tell me about your last project" can easily turn into a 2 hour conversation with any developer who has built anything of substance. It will tell you everything you need to know about them.
angrycoder··on Amazon’s Music Download Site is Cheaper Than iTunes 78% of the Time
I don't know how Apple has the 'integrated experience' advantage. When I buy mp3's on Amazon I can download them to my PC, leave them in the cloud and stream them over the web, or download/stream them to any iOS or Android device using their cloud app. Apple gives me similar features, but only if I stay in the iOS/OSX ecosystem.

Last year, amazon put the mp3's for around 70% of the cd's I bought from them over the past 15 years into their cloud for free. When apple removed DRM from the iTunes store, they wanted me to pay over $300 to unlock my collection.

Amazon also lets me upload my own collection into their cloud and gives me the same streaming and download capacity across any device just as if I had bought the songs from them.

I don't see how Apple wins on price, features, or experience.

angrycoder··on The C++ Programming Language (4th Edition)
COBOL++, hey it still has a C in it.
angrycoder··on John Carmack starting port of Wolf 3D in Haskell
I'm not John Carmack, but I spent 2 hours today trying to implement basic cryptography ciphers in Racket. What was the immediate benefit? Nothing, but it was fun.
angrycoder··on Show HN: Four months of indie game dev
I would say the 50/50 rule holds true for most software, not just games. Although most people usually express it as the 80/20 rule where 20=the other 80%.
angrycoder··on Setting up Sublime Text 2
> [1] I'm not the one to start wars. vi might be just as good, but I'm not going to learn it this side of the river Styx

Of course you aren't, as long as it is one of the two editors you approve of.

angrycoder··on We call ourselves innovators, but most of us are really just iterators
So basically you are creating your own context based on your biases to paint the OP as evil because he didn't provide a full, encyclopedic accounting of everything he worked on.

gg internet once again.

angrycoder··on Sorry Google; you can Keep it to yourself
> and to be quite frank some people are being quite whiny and entitled.

The mistake here is thinking that google's 'free' services are free. I am letting you spy on me (gather metrics on what I read, what I've marked as important, what I've shared with others) in exchange for the use of your product.

That type of data should be worth 10x more to an advertising company than the 5 or 10 dollars a month than I would pay for each service.

angrycoder··on Teaching Square Roots to a Five Year Old
This is a fairly old teaching method. I remember doing it over 30 years ago when I was 6 years old at Montessori. We used a wooden board and pegs though.
angrycoder··on The Rise Of The Artist
Picture a writer. You've seen him countless times in tv shows and movies. Brow furrowed, pencil gripped tight between teeth, hunched over a typewritter, tearing pages out and throwing them into an overflowing waste basket, staring at the ceiling praying for inspiration.

Picture a developer. Brow furrowed, hunched over a keyboard, the room is dark but he glows from the light of the monitor, a pile of empty mountain dew cans littering his waste basket, slamming his fist on the desk in frustation.

Creativity is noticing the absence of something and knowing how to bring from the void into reality. You sketch it. You poke it and prod it. You shape it until it is just so. You love it until you hate it enough to call it done.

Sounds a lot like coding, at least if you are doing it right.

Please, learn how to code. Learn how to draw. Learn how to think. Learn how to write. Learn how to solve problems. Learn how to do everything until something sticks. Not until you find something that you 'love', but until you find something that you just can't not do. And when you grow tired of it, do something else.

angrycoder··on I'm not too happy about Sublime Text 3
Software development has to be one of the only professions where we expect all our tools to be free. And on the off chance we do pay for something, we better get lifetime, monthly updates for free as well.

Seriously, imagine if our clients had the same expectations of the software we wrote.

angrycoder··on Halo Creator Unveils Its Next Masterpiece, a Persistent Online World
Your salary number is bit too high, in general, game developers make less than your average software developer.

Also, there is no way they have 350 programmers working on that project. That number has to include various types of designers, artists, and programmers.

angrycoder··on Y Combinator is funding the future of spam in Windows
So YC is like the crack dealer who also runs his own rehab clinic. Pretty smart.
angrycoder··on Aaron Swartz, Asking For Help, 119 Days Ago
An honest appraisal? That is one way of looking at it. Another way is he threw out a giant derogatory 'Meh' to someone asking for help.

Does he bear responsibility for what happened to Aaron? No, but it is also not hard to see how the top ranked comment from a respected member didn't carry some weight in how people perceived Aaron and his situation.

The big take away here is that words matter and maybe if you don't have all 'the facts available' you can give someone the benefit of of the doubt. Or the next time you feel like making a 'meh' post, just say nothing at all.
