annadane··on Lithium morphology discovery could lead to safer lithium-metal batteries
I laughed
annadane··on You can deactivate anyone's WhatsApp account by simply sending an email
They sold it under the condition he wouldn't lie, it was a condition for him to have it, and he lied
annadane··on You can deactivate anyone's WhatsApp account by simply sending an email
Yes but the original founders did that. Zuckerberg took it from them and immediately lied about data sharing, there's a reason why the founders left in disgust
annadane··on Threads, an Instagram app
The problem with Facebook's products always comes down to one overriding fact, Zuckerberg's desire to win over everybody else; he's constantly been accused of stealing from people, it's not a surprise everything he owns is either extremely coercive or broken from a technical standpoint
annadane··on Deploying key transparency at WhatsApp
Sure, network effects are hard to overcome; my point is that Zuckerberg bought it as a competition killing move so they're not likely to put any quality control into it
annadane··on Deploying key transparency at WhatsApp
But why would anyone use Whatsapp after the Onavo stuff?
annadane··on Mass layoffs and absentee bosses create a morale crisis at Meta
I think people are missing the point when they call Metaverse a 'misstep' because it implies Zuckerberg was a good actor who just happened to get this one thing wrong... if you look through his history of things like forced Whatsapp sharing (plus Onavo), Free Basics, all of the shitty things the company does... the Metaverse was never a good faith effort and people need to understand that; newsflash, he's not a shining example of what a good person is

(And the whole stealing Facebook from other people in the first place, anyway)

annadane··on Facebook Announces Meta Verified
My first impression of this is literally "So, maybe a good idea, but isn't this Zuckerberg just copying yet another person like he's always done forever?"
annadane··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
He's not high, he's been treating people like contempt ever since Harvard, this isn't new
annadane··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
Forcing a mandatory Facebook account is "doing an ok job"...?
annadane··on Myocarditis after Covid vaccination: Research on possible long-term risks begins
Lots of suspiciously downvoted comments here.
annadane··on Communities Now Available
The thing is, I wouldn't want to use Whatsapp considering how Facebook got it: spy on people with Onavo and then basically pressure the original founders out of the company, and then do stuff like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25662215... that doesn't sound like stewards I'd trust
annadane··on Instagram ‘down’, suspending accounts for no apparent reason
And I bet if it was only Apple's iOS changes they would be fine, but that combined with Zuck's Metaverse obsession is dragging them under
annadane··on WhatsApp is more secure than iMessage: Mark Zuckerberg
But given his history of acquiring the product he has no right to talk; what he did is blatantly criminal
annadane··on WhatsApp is more secure than iMessage: Mark Zuckerberg
lol. Zuck, you spied on people with Onavo and kicked Acton and Koum out of the company, you have no moral standing whatsoever
annadane··on Linear.app
A lot of websites are like this for products, it makes it really tedious to navigate
annadane··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Is this Moxie's decision?
annadane··on Google officially launches Equiano subsea cable
Google has a lot of failures of their own but they seem at least semi-committed to an open internet (with actual ethical standards), something I can't exactly say for Zuckerberg
annadane··on Meta has banned the personal Facebook accounts for everyone on our team
And yet Meta was involved with things like Free Basics, or forcing the Oculus account with a bait and switch, and repeatedly lying about Whatsapp - but I'm sure this Instagram thing is much worse, somehow
annadane··on Facebook sued for skirting Apple privacy rules to snoop on users
Yeah, but specifically Zuckerberg. He's never cared about other people
annadane··on FB feed is 98% suggested pages and barely any friends' posts
I'm seeing a few posts here that basically they have to do this because it's an ad service, it's for shareholders, etc. When are we going to blame Zuck and his unique brand of dishonesty and lying to everyone? They've misled their own investors and advertisers, at what point do we stop saying "with anyone else at the helm it would be the same" and recognize his character issues?
annadane··on Bibliogram, Open-source front-end for Instagram, is being discontinued
Or legally required to provide a chronological feed, which even logged-in users don't get
annadane··on Bibliogram, Open-source front-end for Instagram, is being discontinued
Incentive? How about "don't be monopolistic assholes"?
annadane··on Bibliogram, Open-source front-end for Instagram, is being discontinued
Take down some of the most egregious pages and disinformation? No, we (Facebook/Meta) will waste our time shutting down anything remotely challenging to our monstrosity we're trying to conquer the world with (see also: shutting down the NYU Ad Observatory, or any countless other examples)
annadane··on Is this the end of social networking?
It's really simple. All Zuckerberg has to do is drop the "dominate everyone" facade. But I think he's incapable of doing that
annadane··on TikTok and the Fall of the Social-Media Giants
> unless someone figures out how to do it with e-mail, which is basically the only other thing that everyone also has

Which they've also hijacked... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4151433

annadane··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
They don't even care about their advertisers, they knowingly perpetrate click fraud (and lying about video metrics). They don't care. Because Zuck doesn't care, he has contempt for everybody, advertisers and users alike
annadane··on Hacker Lab Is Closing
I have nothing to add to this comment other than to say your dog is very cute
annadane··on Facebook has started to encrypt links to counter privacy-improving URL Stripping
I agree with you. For most people 'just don't use it' simply is not an option. We just have to hope Mark Zuckerberg gets removed or the proper regulation gets introduced to make the platform better
annadane··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
Only Mark Zuckerberg could possibly announce with a straight face (without apologizing for having made a Facebook login mandatory previously) this, as if he's doing us a favor. The man is a narcissist and megalomaniac
