ares623··on Vathographs: Photographic depth maps as creative expression
No, no, the depth is _inferred_, not hallucinated. See? There's a difference.

ares623··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
Now, riddle me this. Does this mean productivity is up or down for the Postgres team?
ares623··on Proton's AI manifesto for software engineering
This is new information. Those other two threads were from leaks reported by 404media and/or one of their engineers being called a "loser".

This is an official blog post, and it looks like they're doubling down.

ares623··on Proton's AI manifesto for software engineering
> The memo is not an in-depth engineering document. It does not delve into the specifics of security, reliability, or infrastructure.

Amazing. I think South Park did it first.

> Your new job as a builder will let you do more and have more impact than you ever have, if you seize the opportunity.

Will the compensation match this amazing outcome?

ares623··on AI delivers 'zero financial payoff' to most companies, Apollo economist says
If you are an AI company with hundreds of billions at your fingertip, and looking for $2 trillion valuation, and can't figure out how to let your customers execute _on the exact thing you are selling them and basing your valuation on_, sounds like a "you" problem too right?
ares623··on AI delivers 'zero financial payoff' to most companies, Apollo economist says
Now we can throw things at the wall, faster.

I understand there's some benefit of this. But is it worth putting the global economy into a death spiral? So ManBeardPc can save 4-9 business days to go and say "yeah, that doesn't work".

ares623··on AI delivers 'zero financial payoff' to most companies, Apollo economist says
That's where the value is in though. Hyping yourself (or your company) up. Attention is all you need, after all.
ares623··on It wasn't AI that flipped Proton's charge
Maybe the "loser" engineer who wanted to do the pentest should be the CEO. He at least still remembers what the company's customers actually want.

Also, doesn't this news paint a fairly large target on them. There is now a rumour that they released a feature that hasn't been properly pen tested, where an engineer was concerned enough to be called a loser.

ares623··on OpenAI's blow to mathematicians: They have annihilated my field of research
what's the total addressable market for mathematicians?
ares623··on Jepsen: ParticleDB 1.1.4
In that case Ant/OAI should give Aphyr a blank check and infinite access to tokens to build the Mother-of-all-Databases. Anthropic has a few days before IPO day, they better get to it!
ares623··on Jepsen: ParticleDB 1.1.4
> Maybe you don't remember Postgres in the early 2000s

The ParticleDB devs definitely don't

ares623··on Jepsen: ParticleDB 1.1.4
And no doubt they wanted a headline to help boost the Anthropic IPO (I'm kidding but knowing the crypto crowd and the overlap with the AI crowd, who knows)
ares623··on Through Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart taught us the measure of a man
The scene is also written by humans for humans, with a human actor pretending to be a sentient machine. It was written at a time when there were actual real humans who fiercely believe other actual real humans should not have the same rights.

To then take that scene and say "wow so relevant for LLMs" and ignore all the context it was made in (yes, please don't miss the irony of the importance of context) is frankly embarrassing.

ares623··on Binance – Total impact sits at around $6.3B
Very bank. Such centralized. Wow.
ares623··on The importance of communities around software
> The AI models arent going away

If they're never going to be updated again (because, according to the labs themselves, training and updating them is the part that loses money), then how soon will the next "do it for my grandma" be discovered? And how useful will the models really be if every public document, and I imagine a decent number of open source libraries, will inevitably have that magic phrase embedded somewhere. php2shell was bad and that was patchable.

ares623··on The importance of communities around software
And don't forget that for the entire existence and our entire experience of LLM-based AI is based on the LLMs being constantly updated and refreshed. And it is widely accepted (and even confirmed by the labs themselves) that updating the models is undeniably unsustainable.

So, I'd love to imagine what the future looks like once we're stuck with a model (no matter how capable) that can never be updated ever again. What future versions of "do it for my grandma" can never be patched out?

ares623··on The importance of communities around software
If AI changes how software is built by _that_ much, then there's no reason to believe that AI won't change how software is consumed by an equal or greater amount.
ares623··on Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue
When StackOverflow tells question askers that their questions are off topic, everyone loses their minds and cheer that StackOverflow is now dead.

But when an algorithm does it, they go "wow such future"

ares623··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
It doesn't really make sense huh. If they're so resource constrained and tokens are so precious, then prices should go up regardless of how much optimization has been done. You're either struggling to meet demand or egregiously over-provisioned. Which is it?
ares623··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
The people running AI companies are famous for being risk averse
ares623··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?

ares623··on SlopCodeBench 10/2026 – Opus 5.5, Astra wins overall, xhigh considered harmful
It's like we took the worst behavior of our colleagues, and went and said "yes, let's automate _that_ part" and patted ourselves on the back.
