ari_elle··on Tesla Shows Off A 90-Second Battery Swap System
So instead of loading my battery i just swap it with a fully charged one and the thing is done. My old battery gets fully charged on site, and if someone else comes along he gets my old now fully charged battery. Basically you never have to charge your Tesla again.... 90 Seconds to "refill"... nice one

ari_elle··on Ask PG: Publish story upvotes data to aid voting ring detection
Please no...

Why should this become a place of witch-hunting?

You give no reason why it should be implemented other than that gaming sites has become more sophisticated.

That is not enough justification, especially since

-) i don't see clear signs for HN degrading in Quality

-) i am sure that pg is concerned about HN and has implemented some measurements to guarantee the high quality of this site for the future

No need for such drastic measurement just yet.

ari_elle··on Google's self-driving car gathers almost 1 GB/sec
If you think so:

-) Google Self-Driving Car gathers 1GB/s. Picture of it analyzing left turn

-) Google Self-Driving Car gathers 1GB/s. What it "sees" making Left Turn

My critic is not so much with the title op chose, more so that he/she felt the need to make the case that a Mod shouldn't have changed it.

Op wanted to know why it is Mod did it, i answered.

ari_elle··on Google's self-driving car gathers almost 1 GB/sec
I can't believe that you were willing to abbr. "Google" with "GOOG" but had to use "almost" in this sentence (utterly redundant word here) or "1 GB/sec" instead of "1 GB/s"

Sorry, i don't know how much "effort" you put into your abbreviation but your title looks like a dirty hack, i would never want on the front page.

Google Car gathers 1GB/sec. What it "sees" making Left turn

That would have been better in my opinion.

With all due respect, i think the Mod changing the title is justified in this case.

ari_elle··on All American Airlines Flights Grounded, Experiencing Nationwide Computer Outage
"American said the issue was caused by an inability to get access to its reservations system, called Sabre. The electronic system, often described as the brains of an airline, is responsible for bookings and reservations but also manages a wide variety of functions related to flights, including printing boarding passes, online check-ins, ticketing, and tracking checked bags. [...]

Sabre, meanwhile, said American’s system outage did not come from its own computer systems. Other airlines, including Southwest Airlines and JetBlue, use the reservation system and have not experienced any outages, said Nancy St. Pierre, a spokeswoman for Sabre."

ari_elle··on Shodan: The scariest search engine on the Internet
it was an honest question and i don't think your reaction is appropriate behaviour for this site.

If most think my comment is worthless, the voting system will make it enter the void. If others think it isn't it will be upvoted. That's how this site works.

Just responding with "Shut up" adds nothing to the discussion and is something i am shocked to see on this site :(

ari_elle··on Shodan: The scariest search engine on the Internet
mhm sorry as i don't know so much about this, but how is this different from google?

meaning that with a specific search in google i can find for example all kinds of cameras or systems one shouldn't find, e.g.:

Maybe Shodan "focuses" on that, but they can't possible index more of those things than Google already has...

Can you find one single thing over Shodan you can't with a specific Google search? (maybe you find such things more easily with Shodan...)

I agree with your statement though: ZFS + Jails is a killer pro-BSD argument when it comes to servers.

ari_elle··on Compile and Execute your favorite programming languages online
I can't neither. Codepad and Ideone are both able of doing that.

Ideone is something more than a pastebin; it's an online compiler and debugging tool which allows to compile and run code online in more than 40 programming languages.

ari_elle··on My crazy idea to piss off spammers
To be honest, i don't have any(!) Spam on both my active mail accounts. Heck i used mail.ru for a while and had a very limited amount of spam.

And like others pointed out: It's a pretty nonsense approach anyways (wondering why it got so many votes)

ari_elle··on First-person Tetris
Very cool indeed, especially because the concept is not something astonishingly complex.

Check out NightMode and Exsistential Crisis

I consider the latter one to be the crown of this concept.

It looks even better and you have to memorize the structures laid, which makes it more interesting (especially since once you've grasped the original idea, the normal mode is not that hard at all)

ari_elle··on The Google Question: Is The Hacker Ethic Compatible With A For Profit Company?
I think it's wrong to speak of a hacker ethic in such strict terms. I would not say somebody is instantly not a hacker if he holds the believe that it is alright to make a project openly available and sell a corporate version with specific features for example. Where to cross the line is up to each person, the extreme example being rms, who even refuses to use a computer where the BIOS isn't free (which many hackers would say is exorbitant).

Also there are quite many companies and business models around free software / open source software.

Additional examples (granted, some of them no big shots):

-) Canonical

-) Codeweavers

-) id Software (engines under GPL, older games -> source code available)

-) Mandriva / Novell

Also there are sometimes open source strategies for certain products (OpenOffice as Open Source Variant of StarOffice for example).

And what about the hosting providers and Linux / BSD support companies, which granted, aren't global players, but there is a vast amount of them.

Is FOSS compatible with Profit? Yes

https://www.gnu.org/gnu/manifesto.html

Is FOSS evenly compatible with profit compared to proprietary products? No, not with today's corporate and economical structures (and the strict copyright)

What goes against "Hacker Ethic" and what not? Debatable

ari_elle··on A list of donations that Bill Gates has made
I am also astonished by that number, but circumcision certainly seems to be an important way of fighting HIV.

"There is compelling evidence that male circumcision reduces the risk of heterosexually acquired HIV infection in men by approximately 60%."[1]

"Evidence among heterosexual men in sub-Saharan Africa shows a decreased risk of between 38 percent and 66 percent over two years"[2]

But Circumcision Rates in Africa are relatively high anyways, due to the population's religious background.[3]

Quote of New York Times Article: [4]

"Among those are 14 studies that provide what the experts characterize as “fair” evidence that circumcision in adulthood protects men from H.I.V. transmission from a female partner, cutting infection rates by 40 to 60 percent. Three of the studies were large randomized controlled trials of the kind considered the gold standard in medicine, but they were carried out in Africa, where H.I.V. — the virus the causes AIDS — is spread primarily among heterosexuals. "

"Other studies have linked male circumcision to lower rates of infection with human papillomavirus and herpes simplex Type 2."

" The procedure has long been recognized to lower urinary tract infections early in life and reduce the incidence of penile cancer."

So i guess it just all adds up in a way.

That being said, the number of over 18 billion Dollars (according to the article) being spent on this issue still astonishes me...

ari_elle··on Surface Pro versus MacBook Air: Who's being dishonest with storage space?
Nitpick (and most likely even considered OT):

- Mac OS shows storage space the right way, because it shows capacity in KB/GB (which is base 10 by definition)

- Windows OS shows storage space the wrong way, because while using base 2, it still claims to show you space in KB,GB (but actually it's GiB)

To what is generally better: Well for the common user GB might make more sense, since every storage device is marketed with GB in mind.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Quantities_of_bytes

And people who feel cheated because of less storage space seem to ignore the fact that this tablet is running a full Windows Operating system.

I guess it's just the mindset of many to think of tablets as "big smartphones" instead of compact full-fledged computers.

ari_elle··on Google Glass to Hit Developers' Hands This Month
Being a private person i just shudder when hearing concepts about face recognition or auto tweets in this context.

^ "Have an alternate reality game with digital objects people can place/write on. Only Glass users can see the teddy bear in the corner, and only google glass users can see the giant graffiti wall where people sign their name."

I am sorry since for some this will not be considered as being a constructive contribution to the discussion, but there is an Anime out there about exactly(!) that. It's called Dennou Coil. Very good series. [Sorry, i just had to mention it! Forgive me.]

ari_elle··on Skrillex Quest
I think if this page demonstrates one thing, then how bad his music is, when i am correct in presuming it's his music that can be heard throughout the game.

Here we have a modern artist, heard by millions, being swamped with prices, yet his music when in the context with a game which even was especially designed with the music in mind, can't hold up to the old classics in any way.

Basically: Soundtrack of most N64/SNES Games >>> Skrillex :D

To all downvoters: i personally am annoyed by the music after 2 minutes of playing, can't deal with this

ari_elle··on Crowding out OpenBSD
I am very disappointed by this article, since it in my opinion clearly misrepresents the things Marc Espie said:

If you look at his original:

-) "Those vendors say "we're not in the distribution business, distribution problems will be handled by OS vendors. We can break compatibility to advance, and not think about it, this is not a problem." [...]

"This is a mindset we need to fight, and this has to be a grass-roots movement."

-) "in some cases, you even have some people, who are PAID by some vendors, agressively pushing GRATUITOUS, non compatible changes. I won't say names, but you guys can fill the blanks in."

-) "Either you're a modern linux with pulseaudio and pam and systemd, or you're dying."

Not being a BSD guy myself, but being a fan of minimalistic linux systems, being a fan of keeping dependencies low, of not necessarily throwing out software that has done it's job for 10+ years to just get the newest gadget in, i actually think he's right with many things he says.

ari_elle··on Do you actually use desktop workspaces?
As i switched to a minimalistic tiling window manager, i more and more saw the value in them.

I have by default 9 virtual desktops, use different ones for different tasks.

Instead of minimizing/maximizing windows i just switch virtual desktops. It perfectly suits my work flow.

In my opinion: 2 monitors instead of one and quick shortcut switching through virtual desktops, developing some routine in using them, definitely boosts ones productivity.

But have to admit that i also didn't quite see value in them while using full Desktop Environment.

Regarding the question of Microsoft not implementing the feature in Windows:

Since the typical Windows User is a heavily mouse dependent one, i think they can do without it.

Hint: Change the title from "Ubuntu workplaces" to just "workplaces" or "Desktop workplaces". I don't see how this is Ubuntu specific

ari_elle··on How To Be A Successful (African) American in Silicon Valley
Great article indeed!

During all of the arguments he made i couldn't help but think about the "lack of successful women in tech/business"-discussion that is - i guess - currently going on not only in my country.

1) Underrepresentation does not equal racism

or bias against women

2) News reports are focusing on the wrong part of the story and there are many women very successful already

3) Greed trumps gender

And also when he mentions possible solutions:

-) Increase the pipeline

Exactly. Often many women in my classes were very good at maths/science, yet only very few went on to really study something like maths/science or something strongly business-related.

ari_elle··on Do You Wanna Touch
Does anyone here also feel like an outsider because you - no matter how other people love it - just won't get used to touch (or for some reason you don't want to) ?

I wouldn't mind my current notebook [1] having a touch display (additionally), but i still wouldn't use it that often i guess (and i wouldn't pay extra for it).

I really have to try the Keyboard of the Surface though, but knowing me - very picky about keyboards - i don't think i could work with it.
