atldev··on Giving up on smart rings
Agreed. It has been consistent enough that I can make a pretty accurate guess each morning based on how I feel. With a consistent scale, I can work on the components (timing, duration, and other factors like alcohol, etc.) and I've made big improvements over the year.
atldev··on Giving up on smart rings
I like my Oura ring and find it one of the least fussy fitness trackers I've used. To me, the battery question is more about time between charging. I can travel for a week on a business trip without taking the charger, no problem. The sizing issue is real and as I dropped weight, the ring became loose and would fall off. I've added a small eva tab on the inside to increase friction and reduce risk until I buy the next version sized down.

The most important metric to me was the sleep score and related components. I've noticed my performance (mentally and physically) is tied to sleep in a huge way. I was skeptical that it would capture sleep metrics accurately, but after about a year of use, I can say without question that the number it presents as my sleep score is a very good proxy of how good I feel throughout the day.

My goal for this past year has been to focus on improving sleep health and for that, the ring has been a very useful tool.

atldev··on Ask HN: Which mechanical keyboard are you using?
Keychron K2. Absolutely love it. https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-k2-wireless-mecha...
atldev··on Your competitor wrote the RFP you're bidding on
So true. I once received an RFP template where our competitor had forgotten to clear their company (and even author) from the document details. I was glad because it helped us avoid a complete waste of time.
atldev··on Crazy New Ideas
> They also vacuum up the trail of crumbs that led to them, making our standards for new ideas impossibly high.

I enjoy this style of writing. Seemingly simple but packs a lot of meaning (like JoelOnSoftware back in the day).

atldev··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking Freelancer? (February 2020)
SEEKING WORK | Remote (location Jacksonville, FL; open to travel)

Full stack Ruby/Rails/JavaScript developer with experience as a technical founder, VP of Engineering, software architect, and tech lead. I specialize in backend development and and data structures. I like writing clean, testable code based on SOLID principles. I like building new tech as well as extending and improving legacy code. As a startup founder, I learned to gather enough data to make important decisions, gather feedback, and iterate quickly to find optimal solutions. I’ve migrated infrastructure from fully-hosted environments to AWS and scaled platforms to handle 10x growth/year. I have excellent communication skills and I’m comfortable working with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.

Most recently, I was the solo technical founder of a high-volume analytics platform and grew the company to over 40 employees.

atldev··on CloudFlare Route leak
Anyone else experiencing issues with CF more frequently lately? We appreciate the service provided, but we're averaging about 1 customer-impacting issue per week over the last few months. And we are considering alternatives. Today's incident was particularly bad, and you'd have no idea that NA was impacted from the status page.

atldev··on Voice to Voice translation in the browser using the Chrome Web Speech API
First couple of tests from English to Spanish worked great. My first thought: the Babelfish from Hitchhiker's Guide is probably only a few years away. Pair this with WordLens on a mobile device and we start breaking down barriers.

atldev··on The Absurdity of LinkedIn
Unrelated to this post, I was trying to downgrade my account from premium to free today. It was surprisingly hard to find the path. I had to google it. Btw, it's under "Privacy and Settings", not under "Account" where you'd expect.

I have nothing against LinkedIn and find it helpful. It just struck me as something that was discussed in a design meeting- "how can we make cancellation hard to do?"

atldev··on CodeCombat in Y Combinator
So glad you posted this video. I didn't get to see your interview live and had been looking for it. Fantastic job! Imagine the pressure for the next team up :)
atldev··on Pixelmator 3.0
I like the clever use of css-based animations on the marketing site. The Invision feature tour (http://www.invisionapp.com/tour) does a great job of this as well. It probably goes unnoticed by the majority of visitors, but I think it communicates great design and attention to detail in a very subtle way. Hats off to the designers and marketing team that built a great site to get the message out.
atldev··on Unsexy sells itself [video]
It's nice to see such a candid talk w/ numbers. Thanks for submitting. This kind of content should get any SaaS entrepreneur excited.
atldev··on Is It Nuts to Give to the Poor Without Strings Attached?
No, we're all volunteers and we raise money for projects. What I mean is that we don't hand out money. We work alongside the community on each project.
atldev··on Ask HN: What are some of your favorite documentaries?
Truth in 24 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFwoxM1MiBw) Great engineering, great strategy (underdog must take risks to beat the well-equipped adversary)

atldev··on Add SublimeText2 to Your Win7 Context Menu
Many of you may have already done this. But I never got around to it (Win7 isn't my primary dev box). It only took me 3 minutes and it probably ROI'd the first day.
atldev··on Is It Nuts to Give to the Poor Without Strings Attached?
I've been to Kenya (village of Ngaamba) 4 times in the last 5 years on service trips through the 410Bridge organization. Their model relies on a village leadership council to prioritize need and decide how resources should be used. Then we come alongside and help. Our first trip focused on water. The second was infrastructure. The third was education. This past June it was staffing a medical clinic that was recently built. Now a community center has sprouted around the clinic and the trip next year will likely focus on micro-finance and entrepreneurship.

This isn't charity. It is partnering with a talented group of village leaders that understand the needs of the community far better than we could. There is accountability but it's driven locally and it's sustainable. They'll be able to carry the momentum they created long after we're gone.

There are plenty of models that work, and I'm glad there are so many helping out. But I've seen first-hand that allowing a community to pull the help they need works better than a foreign push model.

atldev··on Jobs movie review roundup: Critics unimpressed
The Social Network isn't a grandiose documentary. If you just look at it as an entertaining story based loosely on people you know written by a talented guy (Aaron Sorkin), it's pretty enjoyable. You might actually like it. And the tech angle must be somewhat attractive if you're drawn to HN.
